New S^3 Mod "All Uniforms" in development (feedback is welcome)

A few pages back, when the Castle Linden encounter was introduced, there was talk regarding fitting music. At the time I said that I had music from the early MoH games as well as dialogue files and stuff like this, but seeing that it might be problematic regarding copyright, I remembered that there was a website full of Royalty free music that would avoid any copyright related issues. So I thought I post it. The music in Silent Storm is excellent but limited and it would be nice if it was possible to expand the range of tunes for the mod.

Well, I am almost done with all the evidence. Here are some of the latest things I added:

Mission_Counterfeit15%2528Photos%2529.png

I think it's an awesome feature. We can now insert various images in PRG item descriptions to assist (or confuse) the player... (all you need to do is hover your mouse over it and... voila!)

The photo is given by Mikhalev during our conversation in "Bodies Found" (the underlined part's been added to the last dialog)

Mikhalev: There is an officer under my command: a recent Moscow appointee named Captain Danilov. I want you to "examine" his quarters. Here is the address and his 1946 photograph. Our archives didn't have any recent pictures of him, for some reason.

(ready for editing, if necessary)

Gaunt_NameID: Danilov's Photo

Gaunt_ToolTipID: A 1946 photograph of Danilov. It was probably taken for identification purposes. The photo clearly depicts Captain's serious face and lean build.

So, right now we have:

1. Old Photo of Danilov (lean or stocky) given by Mikhalev

2. Real Danilov (gaunt or chubby) or fake Danilov (gaunt or chubby) with matching ID card

3. Note dropped by Linz implying one of the 4 possibilities: real Danilov/ real Sovkov, real Danilov/ fake Sovkov, fake Danilov/ real Sovkov or fake Danilov/ fake Sovkov...

4. Evidence found in the house... Here is one of the sets:

I tried to follow Ecthel's suggestions and guidlines. There are 4 sets, the one above is just one of them.

There have to be consequences for killing the real Danilov (intentionally or by mistake) or letting the fake one go. What do you think those consequences should be?

DIALOG (rewritten, combined and ready for editing):

CounterfeitDlg1:

Captain Danilov: ... precisely, just two more days and you'll get the rest of the merchandise…

Smuggler Boss: (annoyed) Oh, save it "Captain", you told me the same thing last week. I am beginning to think you've got no more merchandise. Perhaps, we need to have a different kind of talk with you... eh?

Captain Danilov: I can't believe it. I arranged a free passage for you, bribed the railroad guards, have always been on time and all I get in return is threats?

Smuggler Boss: (raising his voice): Oh, that's right, the guards…Actually, I am curious how much you had to do with them demanding more money for the "free passage" you arranged.

Captain Danilov: What are you talking about?!

Smuggler Boss: Oh, don't pretend you didn't know. You think you can take my money, make me wait and "tax" me at the border? You think I am an amateur? I've got news for you, "Captain"! Last night, both of your greedy little friends went for a swim, permanently.

Captain Danilov: …All right, Linz, you made your point. Obviously they were idiots to cross a man like you. I'll find replacements for them.

Smuggler Boss: (grinning) In the meantime - how about some compensation for my losses?

Captain Danilov: Compensation?

Smuggler Boss: Yes, compensation. We've had a 10 day lag in our operations. There are a lot of thirsty Yankees in Zehlendorf, and if I don't give them what they want, they'll start looking elsewhere to satisfy their needs.

Captain Danilov: All right, Linz, I'll compensate your "losses". Wait here. I'll bring the money.

Smuggler Boss: (hesitating) Umm...Fine, just don't take all night, "captain"…

-----------------------------------------------

CounterfeitDlg2:

Smuggler Boss: Hey, "Captain"! My patience is running out… Where is my money?

Smuggler: I don't like it, boss. It's been quite a while since he entered the house. How about this: we go in, drop that fool and take whatever he’s got in there.

Smuggler Boss: Hmmm…If my source is correct, he is going to ditch us anyway. Did you talk to the boys about it?

Smuggler: Yeah, in the car on our way here. They didn't like that Russian swine from the start…

Smuggler Boss: (considering his options) All right, let's do it then. Gather up the boys, keep it down and don't leave any witnesses.

-----------------------------------------------

CounterfeitDlg3:

Captain Danilov: You heard them, Otto. Get your men ready.

Elisa: Oh, god! What are we going to do?

Captain Danilov: Don't worry, Elisa, I am coming up. We'll lock the door and shoot anyone who tries to get in.

-----------------------------------------------

We get a pop-up message:

"It appears you’ll need to dispose of both the smugglers and the Otto's group to get to Danilov. In case you try to get to him earlier he's likely to shoot you on sight."

-----------------------------------------------

Smugglers (~15 of them) will be coming from the road (main and tributary), the Grimm bandits (~6) will be on the first and second floor.

Danilov and Elisa/Anna will hole up on the 3rd floor behind closed door. They are hostile to you until you kill all the others.

---------------------------------

Once all the smugglers and the Grimm bandits are dead and you didn’t attack or kill Danilov or Elisa/Anna a conversation starts:

CounterfeitDlg4:

You: Hey, is anyone there? Captain Danilov?

Captain Danilov: Huh? Otto?

You: Otto and his men are dead, so are Linz and his goons.

Captain Danilov: Who is this?

You: Mikhailev sent me. Put away your weapons. I am coming up.

--------------------------------

The party is 'teleported' to the 3rd floor and another conversation starts with Danilov and Elisa/Anna present

CounterfeitDlg5:

Captain Danilov: You said Lieutenant Colonel sent you? If it's about those dead officers - I had nothing to do with it. You heard Linz, they got greedy, he killed them.

You: Yes and I killed him.

Captain Danilov: Right. (biting on his lip) What do you want?

You: Answers.

Captain Danilov: (looking at his watch) Fine. What do you want to know?

Elisa: (suspiciously looking at you) Fedor, there is no time!

Captain Danilov: I know, Elisa... (to you) Ask you questions.

You: Who was Otto?

Captain Danilov: He worked for Alfred Grimm. Grimm is the in charge of ‘nightlife’ in West Berlin.

You: And Linz?

Captain Danilov: He worked for Grimm’s competitor Dirk Hutten.

You: What was your objective?

Captain Danilov: If Mikhalev didn’t tell you, why should I?

You: Because there are over 20 dead bodies around your house, I’d hate to add 2 more to the pile.

Captain Danilov: (tightening his lips) I see… We were tasked with establishing a smuggling ring, posing as ‘corrupt’ Soviet officers dealing in alcohol.

You: Who’s ‘we’?

Captain Danilov: Master Sergeant Sovkov and I. We needed to gain Hutten’s trust, then establish contact with Grimm and eventually become his suppliers. Hutten and Linz would have to be eliminated at that point.

You: Where is Sovkov?

Captain Danilov: (narrowing his eyes) He is not here. Can we go now?

You: No.

Captain Danilov: What?

You: You heard me… Give me your ID.

Captain Danilov: Why?.. err… fine. Here…(gives his ID) Look, Elisa and I need to be elsewhere and we are already late.

You: It shouldn’t take long. Stay here, Danilov. I’ll be right back.

Another pop-up:

“Look around the house for clues confirming Danilov’s statements. If he is telling the truth there is no reason to keep him here. Talk to him and inform him of your decision”

Now Danilov can be talked to.

@ dimovski

Hungarian SMGs and other 9x25 Mauser Export weapons are not ready yet.

Regarding the ammo pricing. The prices used for Parabellum rounds are original/ default. I didn't modify them.

Price of 9mm bullet = 3

Price of 9mm JHP bullet = 6

Clip price = bullet price * number of bullets in a clip

I don't see anything unusual in the prices. JHP bullet ~= 2 * Regular (Balle) bullet

(I looked up the current ammo prices and they seem to conform to Nival's original idea. Not sure about the 1948 specifics. I'd imagine hollow points were even more rare then... not sure.)

9mm 32 round clip = 3 * 32 = $ 96

9mm JHP 10 round clip = 6 * 10 = $ 60

I don't see any 'bugs'. Do you think those prices need to be changed?

About the headgear: Unfortunately, we can only add one headgear item per uniform. In essense: either helmet or goggles (or glasses or gas mask). Not both.

@Lt,

Interesting site. I am not sure if the music he writes fits the Silent Storm theme (I only listened to 10-12 classical waves he had there). In any case it's good to have a royalty free alternative just in case. Thank you for finding it.

Consequences

Letting fake Danilov go would probably be pretty simple in the long term. He and Anna continue supplying info to Die Wolfe and sabotaging Soviet operations. For more immediate consequences, I think they'd tip off their handlers about the player's involvement. Perhaps Die Wolfe ambushes the player/has increased guards/hides evidence of their involvement more thoroughly on subsequent missions in this chain?

As for killing real Danilov, perhaps he has crucial info that he committed to memory about something that unlocks a mission? Also, I think the Soviets might be a little miffed that you killed a loyal officer after they investigate and verify that he's real and loyal. Less support, perhaps?

Editing Notes

1) Is the Doctor in the second Fake Gaunt Danilov clue a Die Wolfe or Soviet doctor? It seems like it could go either way to me, which is why I'm not editing it yet.

2) Changed 1944 to 1941 since that's when things were at their most desperate for the Soviet Union, IIRC. I could be wrong though, so feel free to change it back.

3) I removed instances of Danilov and Elisa referring to each other by name, to make it more ambiguous as to whether they're real or not. Of course, if they're fake, they just might be that good at acting, so either way works, I guess.

That's all right.

If you come across something strange, not working or not making sense, please bring it to my attention and I'll see if I can correct it. Thanks, dimovsky

Thank you for editing, great work! I'll be importing those dialogs tomorrow.

(just one note: Otto is German. Would he be using 'ain't no' expressions?..

1) Yes, the Fake Gaunt Dan doctor's note does sound confusing.

2) 1941 is probably better.

3) Nice. Now it's even more confusing. smile.png

You see, the initial idea I had was to create pieces of evidence that are not 100% conclusive by themselves, only in combination with other clues they should indicate something certain, like puzzle pieces.

What do you think the fake gaunt Dan doc's note should say in order to be more clear?

--------------------------------

We could add Elisa's/Anna's diary pages to assist or confuse the player.

Here are some examples:

"His continuous advances are starting to get on my nerves. I am seriously thinking of reporting it to his superiors. I didn't sign up for this..." (real Dan)

"How much longer am I going to be stuck with this hog. His constant burping and farting make me sick..." (fake fat Dan)

"He is not a bad looking man, this captain. I wish we'd met under different circumstances..." (real Dan)

"If he keeps it up our cover is going to be blown. I just feel it. He is not following his surgeon's advice, talks way too much with the customers and..." (???)

"I hope our affair doesn't jeopardise the mission. Danilov insists it's part of our disguise. Lier! I like him anyway." (real Dan)

"What a fool! One moment he tells me his boss might be on to him and right after that he slides his hand under my skirt... Idiot!" (fake Dan)

"I am getting sick and tied of all this. Can't wait till we proceed with the operation". (fake Dan)

"Do we really need to sleep together? He insists it's part of our cover yet noone can see us in the bedroom... and why does he speak Russian in his sleep?" (???)

"I just had one of those strange nightmares. Danilov says it's nothing to worry about. I think he is hiding something from me." (???)

If you have other ideas, please share them.

------------------------------------------

Now I need to add some counterfeit evidence (to connect Herr Lander to all this) and we'll be good to go.

(Real) A couple of banknotes marked with iodine and a piece of rag paper attached to an unfinished report. "???" (ideas about what to put in the report)

question: if the counterfeiters are using rag paper with traces of starch what color change would we expect after applying iodine to it? (purple? blue? pink?)

(Fake) A lot of new crispy fake bills, a piece of rag paper and a note fragment: "...the quality is terrible. Need to bring it up with them... next time we meet..."

Maybe, some other evidence, not as obvious as the above?...

-------------------------------------------

And also warn the player to keep an eye on Danilov, while searching for clues. Danilov should probably go outside instead of us going to the 3rd floor (the 'waypoints' might get tricky in case the building gets destroyed). If our group loses sight of him - he is gone...

“Look around the house for clues confirming Danilov’s statements. If he is telling the truth, there is no reason to keep him here. As a precautionary measure: try to maintain visual contact with him and his wife.

Talk to him and inform him of your decision once you're finished searching.”

Sorry for the late reply, been busier than I expected this weekend.

Maybe Otto watched an American gangster movie and liked it, or he was raised in the US but moved to Germany for whatever reason? tongue.png Anyway, "are no" works too.

Doctor's Note

Well, since it could go either way, I suppose I'll make two versions and you can pick which one you prefer.

Die Wolfe:

"I understand you're finding it difficult to stick to the diet, but it's essential you do so.

Start by eating at least some fruit, instead of absolutely none at all. You're no use to us if you're unconscious or dead."

Soviet:

"I've had difficult patients before, but you are proving to be absolutely impossible to deal with.

I don't understand why you insist on this diet, Captain, but at least add some fruit to it before you start suffering from malnutrition."

Elisa/Anne Diary Entries Suggestions

1) "These undercover missions are always a pain, but at least I'm in good company for once." (real Danilov)

2) "He just keeps eating up my cooking. It's gratifying, but also a bit worrying. Perhaps I should check with his doctor..." (real fat Danilov)

3) "The diet they have him on does seem a bit excessive, but I'm sure the surgeon has good reasons for it." (real gaunt Danilov)

4) "How much longer do I have to keep this charade up? That sad excuse of a partner I'm stuck with isn't helping at all." (fake Danilov)

5) "Food, food and more food. I understand why, but how does he keep putting it all away?" (fake fat Danilov)

6) "His constant complaining about the diet is getting on my nerves. At least food expenses are low." (fake gaunt Danilov)

Counterfeit Money

According to the Wikipedia article, it'll turn purplish-black.

Unfinished Report: The report appears to be unfinished, but Herr Lander may be interested in this section: "...The provided sample of counterfeit bills responded positively when iodine was applied. They are otherwise indistinguishable from regular banknotes under a cursory examination..."

Suggestions:

1) A sealed envelope with some stains on it. It's marked with a "C" with "Iodine" scribbled underneath. (real Danilov)

2) A "Bank deutscher Länder" guidebook to Deutschmark bank notes. A checklist is tucked inside. (real Danilov)

3) A pack of Deutschmarks that look brand new. A note tucked into the pack says: "These look good, should pass inspection." (fake Danilov)

4) A "Bank deutscher Länder" guidebook to Deutschmark bank notes. Notes on their features are scribbled in the margins. (fake Danilov)

Just registered to say "thanks" for your mod. Good job you have done wink.png

I've downloaded BlunterMod_v2.3 and it plays really nice.

I used to play with AmmoFixes v1.1earlier, but this one is definitely a better choice.

Did not find many bugs so far. Only one strange random encounter behavior: it took me to an "one grass block island" with no buildings, enemies or items. Just my troops on the grass.

I hope you will not stop and publish some new versions of the mod. It brings life to that game.

Edit 1:

a) bank does't exchange soviet rubles for money (can only be sold to arms dealer) - got tons of rubles for mission with Lebiedview

b) sometimes bank does't exchange dollars (not sure why, mostly it works just fine)

c) female uniforms fits exotic dancers, not troopers (will there be used in different storyline?)

Edit 2:

a) got it covered - only main hero can exchange money and only 1-2 money packs at once (banks works)

Thanks, Ecthel.

I've already added several types of reports (4), notes (6) and Elisa/Anna diary entries (6). Those are in addition to the notepad and the doctor's notices (I'll probably need to run them by you in a bit after I incorporate your suggestions in some of them). I'll post the screenshots and the relevant text strings when I am done.

Purplish-black... all right I'll add some iodine stains to some of the reports...

Deutschmark guidebook idea is interesting...

Let's see what we can do with all these. :)

Where was that 'empty' encounter? Which chapter? Do you remember where exactly it showed up?

(I might have forgotten to remove a zone I used for testing.)

Ok, I won't address the bank issue, it seems you figured it out.

The 'Honor Guard' uniforms were added just for fun. But we can always use them for something special ( 'alternative' lifestyle evidence found in someone's house or something related to the world's oldest profession.)

All right, folks.

I imported all the dialogs (made separate ones for Fat and Gaunt Danilov, because it needed a different dialog pers, i.e. the talking head). Had to split the second to the last dialog into three because Elisa was stubbornly trying to show up on the Hero's side, during the dialog play, instead of her husband's (I know, I know don't say it... those women...)

Finished randomizing the clues (36 so far). Basically, here is what I did: I created 6 houses, each has its own tiny differences and clue locations - and it comes with matching Captain Danilov. Danilov comes with an identifier that gets removed once it's served its purpose. Then, after all these load on the main template - the script runs a check on the 'identifier'--- figures out which Danilov it is, sets necessary markers and removes the 'identifier' from Danilov's inventory. (I tried to do the same with getting a name of a piece of furniture - but with poor results sad.png )

Now, I am done with the main script. Seems solid (knock on wood).

I haven't run into any major problems yet. Hopefully it'll stay that way...

Currently, I'm getting Global Variables ironed out (i.e. how Mikhalev will know what we did, how the game world will react to us, what zones will be available, other consequences, etc.)

Next: we decide to let him go.

Mission_Counterfeit40%2528Gameplay%2529.png

I decided not to question Danilov (due to the fact that creating and importing dialogs is a very energy and time consuming activity).

We can always back out of this dialog and think a bit longer about our next step - 'to kill' or 'not to kill'.

I dropped the 'time limit' idea as, frankly, I don't like them myself (especially in turn-based games).

We'll probably need to develop a more clear set of consequences for killing the real Soviet operative or letting the D.W. operative go (Ecthel already offered some interesting ideas on the subject a few posts back).

(Perhaps, some of the entries don't need to be evidence at all... wink.png )

New Evidence

(ready for editing)

the Diary:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) A couple of entries catch your eye:

"What an idiot! One moment he tells me his boss might be on to him and a moment later he slides his hand right under my skirt... Skinny bastard!"

"I am getting sick and tied of all this. Can't wait till we proceed with the plan."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) A couple of entries catch your eye:

"How much longer am I going to be stuck with this hog. His constant burping and farting make me sick..."

"I just had one of those strange nightmares. I think I hear someone walking outside every night. He says it's nothing to worry about. But there aren't any houses around and the pub is closed. Who could it be? I know he is hiding something from me... Better keep my gun close."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) A couple of entries catch your eye:

"How much longer do I have to keep this charade up? That sad excuse of a partner I'm stuck with isn't helping at all."

"Food, food and more food. I understand why, but how does he keep putting it all away?"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) A couple of entries catch your eye:

"How much longer do I have to keep this charade up? That sad excuse of a partner I'm stuck with isn't helping at all."

"His constant complaining about the diet is getting on my nerves. At least food expenses are low."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5) "His continuous sexual advances and tastless flirtatious comments are starting to get on my nerves. I am seriously thinking of reporting it to his superiors. I didn't sign up for this..."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6) A couple of entries catch your eye:

"He is not a bad looking man, this captain. A little rotund but... I don't mind. I wish we'd met under different circumstances..."

"I hope our affair doesn't jeopardise the mission. Danilov insists it's part of our disguise. Liar! ...could be honest for once... I wonder if he reads this..."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7) A few entries draw your attention:

"Is it necessary for us to sleep together? He insists that it's part of our cover, yet noone can see us in the bedroom... and does he really have to speak Russian in his sleep? So annoying! I can't understand a word."

"Well, it's not so bad now that we... I just wish I spoke better Russian... so that we could communicate beyond physical contact and... Where is that dictionary?"

"Our grocery lists are very long. Why didn't his commander warn me about his unusual appetites before?..."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8) You can only make out the last couple of entries on this half-burned diary page:

"...that Linz fellow gives me the creeps. I don't think my 'husband' is intimidating enough for these people. Too slim! They always lo..."

"...sleeping with my Sauer nearby. Those smugglers are on to him, I can feel..."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9) A couple of entries catch your eye:

"These undercover missions are always a pain, but at least I'm in good company for once."

"He just keeps eating up my cooking. It's gratifying, but also a bit worrying. Perhaps I should check with his doctor..."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10) A couple of entries catch your eye:

"These undercover missions are always a pain, but at least I'm in good company for once."

"The diet they have him on does seem a bit excessive, but I'm sure the surgeon has good reasons for it."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Counterfeit evidence:

Maybe, Herr Lander needs to be tied to each one (mentioned, referenced, etc.)???

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Binder

The binder contains four freshly printed counterfeit Deutschemark bills and several beer delivery receits clipped together.

A small note attached to the binder states:"...wrong material. Easily stained with iodine. Consider obtaining an alternative."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) Report

The report appears to be unfinished, but Herr Lander may be interested in this section:

"...The provided sample of counterfeit bills responded positively when iodine was applied. They are otherwise indistinguishable from regular banknotes under a cursory examination..."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) Unfinished Report.

An unfinished report containing a short description of found counterfeit items and the tests conducted to ascertain their authenticity.

A sheet of unseparated conterfeit Deutschemark bills marked with iodine is attached to the report.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) Folder

Several brand new Ost- and Deutschemark bills marked with iodine are tucked inside.

The envelope clipped to the top has a note stating:"These look good, should pass inspection."

In the back of the folder there is a "Bank deutscher Lander" guidebook to Deutschmark bank notes. Notes on their features are scribbled in the margins.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5) Folder

A sealed envelope with some stains on it is clipped to the front cover. The envelope is marked with a "C" with "Iodine" scribbled underneath.

Several Ost- and Deutschemark bills marked with iodine are stapled together.

There is also a "Bank deutscher Lander" guidebook to Deutschemark bank notes with a checklist tucked inside.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6) Freshly printed Ostmarks

Several sheets of freshly printed counterfeit Ostmark bills.

There is a small note attached to the stack: "...the quality is terrible... need to bring it up... next time we meet."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7) Several papers clipped together

A sheet of unseparated counterfeit Ostmark bills heavily stained with iodine is attached to the stack.

There is a small note clipped to the top: "...two different types of paper used. Starch present in both obtained samples."

The bottom page has Danilov's signature and the current date.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Letter:

Some entries might be too obvious.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Letter

The letter shows excessive wear as if reread multiple time. You can only discern parts of it:

" ...telling you - one can't stay a bachelor forever... and when your current 'marriage' expires... she showed interest in you... and her cooking is something. I thought you'd want to kno... ."

Post-stamped "Moscow, Lubyanka..." the rest is illegible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) Personal correspondence

Most of the ink is smudged but a few lines remained intact :

" ...besides passing the fitness tests shouldn't be a problem for you when you get there... top shape all your career. No wonder they..."

"...leaving in two days for Germany. Good luck with your new assignment".

The address is illegible, so is the signature.

Danilov's Folder

1) A folder with documents

A folder filled with dozens of papers that appear to be regular accounting records. Upon further examination, you notice that some of the number sequences resemble some sort of code. Mikhalev will definitely want to look at it.

Since I am working on the Brandenburg chapter map at the moment - we'll probably need to populate it with various random encounters.

Question: What kind of REs should we have in this area? When suggesting possible locations, please, keep in mind the following:

-------------------------------------

- the geographical and economic settings

a) Germany is still recovering from their defeat in WWII and the destruction caused by it

b) that area is predominantly flat (no mountains), with lots of roads, RR ( tracks, stations and depots)

c) Berlin as their important cultural, political and econimic center - would likely be recovering faster and feature more activity in general...

d) Some sort of bio-chemical spill in West Berlin ( the drinking water is contaminated, fresh water is in demand, any direct contact with and consumption of the affected water causes either death or mental instability, quarantine issued in some parts of the U.S. and British controlled sectors of W.B.)

---------------------------------------

- the year is 1948 ...

---------------------------------------

- the overall political situation

a) the tensions between the Soviet Union and the U.S. are escalating (Berlin blockade)

b) the U.S. don't have any developed spy networks on the territory of S.U. and have to rely heavily on former Nazi intelligence machine (who in turn exaggerate their reports, manipulate the received data, which eventually leads to even more tension)

---------------------------------------

- D.W. activities and objectives (discussed earlier)

---------------------------------------

- alcohol smuggling

- possibly prostitution

- kidnappings?

- robberies?

- burglaries?

- well, we did introduce the zombies, so...

.........

Whatever you can come up with. (please describe the encounter you envision in as much detail as possible, layout, opposition, etc.)

????

Die Wolfe Saboteurs

Maps:

1) Modified version(s) of Depo, Depo Large or Sm Electrical Station (under Templates/Random Encounters - Basic/Germany in MapEdit). Perhaps all three as separate REs?

2) A section of railway track lined by telegraph poles/power lines and some trees. Isolated, no buildings nearby.

3) A fuel depot consisting of several fuel tanks surrounded by a wire fence, with a small-medium sized building (garrison's quarters) and some trucks nearby. Fence is breached, signs of battle damage. Perhaps have a few Allied and DW corpses scattered around too?

Enemy Squad Composition:

1) Around 4 to 8 saboteurs.

2) At least 1 should be an Engineer to set the demolition charges, while the rest should be Soldiers/Scouts with pretty good AP and Shooting skill. Maybe 1 Sniper as well.

Enemy Equipment:

1) Each saboteur would probably carry a German carbine or SMG, probably Mauser 33/40s or MP40s respectively. Maybe upgrade to MP43 assault rifles for harder RE variants?

2) Light body armor at most, preferably none.

3) Engineering charges (dynamite, etc.) for the above-mentioned explosives expert.

Zombie-Overrun Rural Clinic

Map:

1) A clinic/doctor's residence in the countryside. A 2-story medium-sized house surrounded by a wooden fence with a well and maybe 1 or 2 smaller buildings (storage/stables/other?) nearby. A few civilian corpses scattered about, perhaps?

Enemy Squad Composition

1) Around 5 to 10 zombies. Shouldn't be too many, it's out in the middle of nowhere.

2) Zombies should be former civilians.

Well, hopefully these give you some further ideas, even if you don't use them.

Good ideas. Thank you, Ecthel.

I'll start working on these in a couple of days (my wife is taking her CA BAR exams right now, so it's a bit hectic around here smile.png )

I have more text that could use editing, if and when you have time, of course.

-------------------------------------

After the "Counterfeit" mission we teleport directly to Mikhalev's Headquarters.

---------------------------------Cutscenes--------------------------------

The Lieutenant Colonel is in his office when Vera Belanova brings in a telegram...

1) Dialog with Belanova:

--if DanBad(Fake)--

Belanova: Comrade Lieutenant Colonel, we just received this from Moscow.

Mikhalev: Let me see it… (Turns pale) Damn it!

Belanova: (concerned) Is something wrong?

Mikhalev: It’s worse than I expected… They found Captain Danilov’s body or whatever was left of him in the basement of the apartment complex where he lived. It must have been there for about six weeks…

Belanova: (shocked) Then who was the one that…?

Mikhalev: I don’t know… (Furrows his brow and continues reading) What is all this nonsense about his medical conditions and… (Glances at Belanova) Vera, I need you to empty Danilov’s desk, seize all the papers, memos, communications…basically, all the documents he’s been handling. Then bring them here. If you need help carrying them, ask one of the guards.

Belanova: Right away, Comrade Lieutenant Colonel.

--if DanGood(Real)--

Belanova: Comrade Lieutenant Colonel, we just received this from Moscow.

Mikhalev: Let me see…Hmm… confirming transfer, reasonable health. They are purposefully being very vague. And what’s this? I didn’t ask about his diet specifics, uniform size or prior medical history… (Glances at Belanova) Oh, thank you, Vera.

_____________________________________________________

Then after a short FadeOut(), FadeIn() we see Mikhalev answering the phone:

(I didn't want to use another character here, so it's just Mikhalev speaking.)

2) Dialog with a patrol officer:

Mikhalev: Yes, Mikhalev’s here (…listening) Heavy gunfire…In Nedlitz? No (…listening) …No, just delay your response (…listening) No, it’s one of mine in there (…listening) No, he doesn’t need any help. Just delay your response by 10 minutes, Sergeant. (…listening) Right (…listening) and keep the locals and the press out of it (…listening) Yes, if our German colleagues get in the way – we have jurisdiction over this matter…(…listening) Right…

Note: I added '...here is his address in Nedlitz...' to the 'Bodies Found' encounter Mikhalev-Hero dialog.

_____________________________________________________

Shortly after another FadeOut(), FadeIn() our party shows up.

3) Dialog with Hero:

Mikhalev: Lieutenant, we need to talk...

And then the screen fades out again and we get a hint screen like this:

Mission_Counterfeit51%2528Debrief%2529.png

It's a long one. Thankfully there a scroller to the right so... it's manageable wink.png

There are 8 versions of this text with 5 parts in each.

The first and the two last ones are currently the same, only the middle two vary (Captain Danilov and Linz' Note).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I) DanBadAlive_SovBad (Both are Fake, Danilov is Alive - we let the fake one go, Sovkov is the 'mole')

(full version)

MIKHALEV'S DILEMMA:

Someone in Mikhalev's unit has been leaking classified information. According to Mikhalev it started about 4 months ago. Several police raids and economic relief efforts have been sabotaged as a result of the leaks.

Mikhalev has 8 officers under his command. The number of his staff hasn't changed since 1946 when the unit was created.

Lt. Colonel believes there is a sleeper agent among his underlings. This agent's sudden activation is troubling.

Mikhalev doesn't believe these saboteurs work for any specific government, although rogue elements from foreign intelligence services are always a possibility.

He thinks their primary objective is destabilization of German economy in both occupational zones and agitation of general population. They've been avoiding any open confrontation with allied military forces so far.

He dubbed this organization "U.G.", for "Unknown Group". Exact goals and resources of U.G. are unclear.

CAPTAIN DANILOV:

Apparently, the real Captain was murdered right before leaving for Germany and someone else, his double, took his place and arrived in Potsdam 6 weeks ago.

The striking resemblance of fake Danilov with real Captain remains a mystery.

The folder I got from fake Danilov is probably just a stack of trivial records that were made look like some sort of code.

Mikhalev thinks the imposter was to assist a sleeper agent among his staff. Obviously, my failure to discover and neutralize Danilov didn't bode well with the Lt. Colonel.

The fake captain will likely tip off his handlers about his blown cover and disappear.

LINZ' NOTE

Knowing what we know now about Danilov, the fact that Linz killed the two Soviet officers is irrelevant.

Yet, Mikhalev found it strange that Linz' boss, presumably Dirk Hutten, wanted to get rid of both Danilov and his smuggling 'partner' Sovkov in one sweep.

I wonder if Sovkov is now in Mikhalev's crosshairs as the primary suspect?

PLAN OF ACTION:

Mikhalev devised a plan to reveal the mole and asked me to assist him.

At 1600 hours tomorrow he is going to gather all his staff and announce a routine security assignment. Several officers will be tasked with insuring safe and secure arrival of an express relief train from Poland in East Berlin. Mikhalev will tell them that the train carries fresh water and medical supplies. In reality, the train will be loaded with regular coal.

If the mole takes the bait, I am to intercept and ambush a group of saboteurs at a small isolated water stop some 20 km north-east from Berlin where most steam locomotives briefly stop to refill their water tanks.

NOTES:

I am to investigate any of the additional leads I might have.

Mikhalev asked me to keep Major Tulin, Lieutenant Ostrovsky and Sergeant Belanova out of the list of possible suspects. His reasons for that were good enough for me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yet, Mikhalev found it strange that someone wanted Linz to kill Danilov, leaving Danilov's smuggling 'partner' Sovkov unscathed, while promising better prices and quicker delivery.

I wonder if Sovkov is now in Mikhalev's crosshairs as the primary suspect?

CAPTAIN DANILOV:

Apparently, the real Captain was murdered right before leaving for Germany and someone else, his double, took his place and arrived in Potsdam 6 weeks ago.

The striking resemblance of fake Danilov with real Captain remains a mystery.

Mikhalev thinks the imposter was to assist a sleeper agent among his staff. Mikhalev was pleased with our actions in Nedlitz.

The folder I found on fake Captain's body might reveal some important information about the mole and the U.G. operations. Although, its deciphering might take a while.

With any luck, the real mole will panic and make a mistake exposing himself.

LINZ' NOTE

Through his own channels, Mikhalev found out that Moscow was concerned with the situation in East Germany and sent an MGB operative to investigate.

It's hard to predict what Danilov will do at this point but Mikhalev believes the Captain will contact him very soon.

Danilov's folder, once deciphered, might contain some valuable information about the mole and the U.G. operations.

4) Tulin and Ostrovsky call Mikhalev (they were sent to check on Danilov's partner Sovkov in 'Bodies Found')

--if DanGood and SovGood--

Tulin: Comrade Lieutenant Colonel, Sovkov's dead. He's been shot in the chest multiple times. The body's already cold. We found several 9mm cases near the doorway. I don't think he returned fire. His TT is still in its holster. There are also two empty vodka bottles on his desk... he must’ve been drinking again and they caught him unaware...

Mikhalev: Damn it! Did you question the neighbors? They must have heard something…

Tulin: No one heard anything. Whoever did this must have used silenced weapons. What do you want us to do?

Mikhalev: Stay there. I’ll be joining you shortly.

-------------------------------------

--if DanGood and SovBad--

Tulin: Comrade Lieutenant Colonel, Sovkov's not home. We knocked several times. Nothing. The light was on as well as the radio, so I asked Ostrovsky to pick the lock and investigate - there was no one inside the house. What do you want us to do?

Mikhalev: Leave two of your regulars there in case he returns and get back here.

------------------------------------

--if DanBad and SovGood--

Tulin: Comrade Lieutenant Colonel, Sovkov's dead... We found a suicide note on his desk and a few dozen of our internal documents and memos scattered all across the floor.

Mikhalev: Suicide?

Tulin: (unsure) Looks like it.

Mikhalev: You don't sound convinced. What is it?

Tulin: I am not sure, but I think Sovkov was left-handed. But the bullet entry wound is on his right temple.

Mikhalev: Murdered?

Tulin: It’s a possibility. What do you want us to do?

Mikhalev: Stay there. I am coming.

----------------------------------

--if DanBad and SovBad—

Tulin: Comrade Lieutenant Colonel, Sovkov's not home. There were signs of forced entry: the lock on the front door was broken and the door was left ajar. Aside from a few empty vodka bottles, everything else seems to be in order. It appears someone came in looking for something, but didn’t find it and left. The rest of the house appears intact. What do you want us to do?

Mikhalev: Comb through the house again and if you don’t find anything, come back here.

Mikhalev: It’s worse than I expected… They found what's left of Captain Danilov’s body in the basement of the apartment complex he lived in. They think it's been there for about six weeks.

Belanova: (shocked) Then, who was the one that arrived here?

Mikhalev: I don’t know. (Furrows his brow and continues reading) What is all this nonsense about his medical conditions and… (Glances at Belanova) Vera, I need you to empty Danilov’s desk, seize every document he’s handled, and bring them here. If you need help carrying them, ask one of the guards.

Belanova: Right away, Comrade Lieutenant Colonel.

--if DanGood(Real)--

Belanova: Comrade Lieutenant Colonel, we just received this from Moscow.

Mikhalev: Let me see…Hmm… confirmation of safe transfer, reasonable health. They are purposefully being very vague. And what’s this? I didn’t ask about his diet specifics, uniform size or prior medical history… (Glances at Belanova) Oh, thank you, Vera.

2) Dialog with a patrol officer:

Mikhalev: Lieutenant Colonel Mikhalev speaking. (listening) Heavy gunfire in Nedlitz, you say? (listening) No, just delay your response. (listening) No, it’s one of mine in there (listening) No, they don’t need any help. Just delay your response by 10 minutes, Sergeant. (listening) Right. (listening) And keep the locals and the press out of it. (listening) Yes, if our German colleagues get in the way – we have jurisdiction over this matter. (listening) Right…

3) Dialog with Hero:

Mikhalev: Lieutenant, we need to talk...

I) DanBadAlive_SovBad (Both are Fake, Danilov is Alive - we let the fake one go, Sovkov is the 'mole')

(full version)

MIKHALEV'S DILEMMA:

Someone in Mikhalev's unit has been leaking classified information. According to Mikhalev, it started about 4 months ago. Several police raids and economic relief efforts have been sabotaged as a result of the leaks.

Mikhalev has 8 officers under his command, who have been part of his unit since it was first created in 1946.

He believes there is a sleeper agent among his underlings. This agent's sudden activation is troubling.

Mikhalev doesn't believe that these saboteurs are working for any specific government, although rogue elements from Allied intelligence services are always a possibility.

He thinks their primary objective is destabilizing the German economy in all occupation zones, as well as agitating the general population. Thus far, they've avoided open confrontation with Allied military forces.

He dubbed this organization "U.G.", for "Unknown Group". Their exact goals and resources are unclear.

CAPTAIN DANILOV:

Apparently, the real Captain was murdered right before he was to leave for Germany and the double we encountered took his place and arrived in Potsdam 6 weeks ago.

The striking resemblance between the fake Danilov and the real Captain remains a mystery.

The folder the fake Danilov gave me is probably just a stack of trivial records that were made look like some sort of code.

Mikhalev thinks the imposter's mission was to assist a sleeper agent among his staff. The Lt. Colonel isn't happy with my failure to discover and neutralize the fake.

The fake captain will likely tip off his handlers about his blown cover and disappear.

I wonder if Sovkov is now in Mikhalev's crosshairs as the primary suspect?

PLAN OF ACTION:

Mikhalev devised a plan to reveal the mole and asked me to assist him.

At 1600 hours tomorrow, he is going to gather all his staff and announce a routine security assignment. Several officers will be tasked with insuring the safe and secure arrival of an express relief train from Poland in East Berlin. Mikhalev will tell them that the train carries fresh water and medical supplies. In reality, the train will be loaded with regular coal.

If the mole takes the bait, I am to intercept and ambush any saboteurs that attack a small isolated water stop some 20 km north-east from Berlin, where most of the steam locomotives briefly stop to refill their water tanks.

NOTES:

I am to investigate any of the additional leads I might have.

Mikhalev asked me to keep Major Tulin, Lieutenant Ostrovsky and Sergeant Belanova out of the list of possible suspects. He gave good reasons for that and knows them much better than I do, but I should keep an eye on them, just in case he's wrong.

Thank you, Ecthel.

1) I created the dialogs and imported them with all the corrections you suggested.

2) Finished Mikhalev's HQ building. I am planning to use it for a final mission 'Defend HQ' later so it needed a bit more work than just a background for a cutscene.

3) Built a zombie infested rural doctor residence/ private practive (with broken furniture, blood spatters everywhere, human corpses, etc. - i.e. nasty looking so far wink.png ). I'll add a couple more secondary structures in there and put it together in a day or so.

After I'm finished with those above (and the other REs you suggested) I'll have some questions about the next few encounters in the Soviet Intel subplot. I have a couple of ideas but I'll need to bounce them off of you guys first...

I'll post some screenshots when I am done.

EDIT: We'll need a least 7-10 REs for this region. So if you have something in mind, please, share!

Local Die Wolfe Kommandant - Special Encounter

What I have in mind for this one is a one-time or very rare encounter, like Castle Linden or the Swiss mansion encounter in S2. Could probably be a main/side mission instead, if you prefer. Could also tie this into the Soviet Intel mission chain, if you want, either as a mission in it, or unlocking it as a reward for completing the chain/accomplishing some side objective in it (perhaps the decoded intel pinpointed its location?).

Map:

1) Seemingly innocuous 2 or 3 story inn/residence/hotel in a small countryside town, possibly with a large basement. It's actually the HQ for Die Wolfe's operations in the Berlin area.

Enemy Squad Composition:

1) 1 Die Wolfe Senior Officer as the titular local DW Kommandant.

2) Around 2 Die Wolfe Armored Soldiers as his personal bodyguard.

3) Around 10 regular Die Wolfe soldiers, possibly with either some or all of them disguised as civilians.

Enemy Equipment:

1) The Senior Officer should probably pack a high-end pistol, possibly a unique one.

2) The Armored Soldiers would pack German LMGs or assault rifles, probably the MG34/42 and MP43/StG44 respectively.

3) The regulars would likely carry high-end German rifles, maybe the FG42 or G41? Alternately, could give them the Volksgewehr 45 or MP43.

4) If disguised as civilians, though, they'd probably be carrying pistols, since hiding a rifle or SMG would be very difficult.

5) Regulars should get light or medium body armor if not in disguise.

Enemy Positions:

1) The Senior Officer is either in an office on the top floor or in the basement if there is one.

2) The Armored Soldiers defend the entrance to wherever the Officer is.

3) Regulars would be scattered throughout the rest of the building.

Reward:

1) The money and/or treasure DW used to fund their operations is an obvious choice.

2) Rare weapons, maybe a unique pistol that belonged to the now-dead Kommandant?

3) Intel about DW activities, possibly unlocking additional encounters/missions?

Well, my idea for an RE would be to have your squad run into some smugglers of some sort that you have to take out, would be fairly standard encounter near a wooden mountain lodge style of house with the smugglers around, armed with various weapons. Could be 5 to 10 of em, nothing fancy. The surrounding area would have some sheds and stuff where you find various guns an ammo as well as cash.

Another idea would be that you run into NKWD officers/soviet agents that are NOT friendly towards you, maybe because they are overzealous or they are corrupt. They would look like armed civilians until you search one of them and find the spies papers that reveal who they are. They would carry soviet and German weapons. Could take place in a town area of some sort, you know a small village or something where they have a comm station, trying to spy on the other allies.

I'm going to go ahead and build them first before proceeding with the Soviet Intel plot.

Done with the Doctor's Clinic/Residence (working on infesting it with zombified civilians).

I am thinking about adding a couple of new RPG items there - a strange vial and a journal. The journal will have a short description of doctor's experiments, what went wrong and caused zombification of some of his patients and personnel. It will also mention a mysterious device the doctor was planning to use the vial with to become uber-powerful or -fast, or-wise. In theory, of course.

Picking up the journal opens a zone containing clue(s) that will lead to uncovering the 'Secret of the Vial'.

At the end we'll find an abandoned (or not) underground lab with a malfuctioning electrical device. Upon use of the device the person carrying the vial will have their primary statistics increased... (1 or 2 to Str/ Dex/ Int)

What do you think?

Here are some screenshots:

I haven't added any zombies yet... still unsure whether to script them to attack the player en masse or leave it to the AI behavior contol routines. Any input?

All right the "Debriefing" encounter is ready.

We will be 'teleported' there right after the "Counterfeit" mission therefore it's still dark and foggy (same area.)

Here are some screens of the encounter:

MikhalevHQ_Debrief1.png

Features over 300 terrain spots.

The flora is primarily coniferous with a few leafy trees.

There we'll need to repel a massive attack on Mikhalev's HQ...

Now, I am afraid the 'Gaunt-Fat' phenomenon hasn't been explained properly.

Perhaps, we could add a short hint (after the "Debriefing" hint) clarifying Danilov's looks?

There are six possible Danilov versions:

(Edit: Danilov's ID always matches his current looks)

1) GoodFat (used to be gaunt/ bulimia?) ID doesn't match 1946 photo,

2) GoodGaunt (used to be fat, gallbladder removal) ID doesn't match 1946 photo,

3) GoodFat (has always been fat/ likes to eat) ID matches 1946 photo,

4) GoodGaunt (has always been gaunt/ good shape/ sports enthusiast?) ID matches 1946 photo,

5) BadFat (imposter) ID matches 1946 photo (independent link to Falkensee clinic),

6) BadGaunt (imposter) ID matches 1946 photo (independent link to Falkensee clinic).

Sorry for the late reply, been busy.

Zombies

I think they should be left to wander around, to enhance the creepiness and tension. You know something bad happened, and you have no idea what or whether whatever caused it is still lurking around.

Perhaps even have them spawn only when you find the vial or the dead bodies, perhaps?

Doctor's Plaque

Using an online English-German dictionary, I think it would say "Dr.<Insert Name>, Arzt für Allgemeinmedizin". Here's the dictionary I used, it also has some alternatives listed: https://www.dict.cc/english-german/g47.php

Hints

Feel free to expand, cut down, edit and/or completely throw these out:

1) GoodFat (Hungry) - ID doesn't match 1946 photo:

The discrepancy of Captain Danilov's appearance is due to lingering psychological trauma from his wartime experience. Food was scarce for him, should there be anything to eat at all. As a result, he tends to gorge himself on any food available to keep his body stocked with enough energy to survive until he got more food, which could have taken several days during the war. In these relatively more plentiful times, however, it's causing him to overeat considerably, gaining a lot of weight in the process. The cooking skill of his "wife", Elisa Kleinke, has not helped matters.

NOTE: I'm thinking either partisan liaison, member of a cut-off military unit, prisoner of war, or any other situation that has him spending a very long time behind enemy lines in harsh conditions, possibly more than one at different times. Could edit "wartime experience" to be more specific, if you want.

2) GoodGaunt (Gallbladder removed) - ID doesn't match 1946 photo:

The discrepancy of Captain Danilov's appearance is due to the relatively recent removal of his gallbladder. As his body now has difficulty digesting fatty foods, his surgeon had put him on a strict low-fat diet for the past few months, causing him to dramatically lose weight. He had registered multiple complaints, but the surgeon remained firm on the matter.

3) I'm not sure if a hint for the real ones where they match up would be necessary, since there's no discrepancy to notice and ask questions about, either in-universe as the main character or out of it as the player.

4) Not sure about the fakes. Are we still going with the "Major who worked with Danilov and Moscow disagree on his appearance" situation, and what is the Falkensee clinic and how is it involved?
