I did something near-identical with a leaky roof window, although mine was an easier fix, using lots of styrofoam and sealant. I really didn't think it would work but it either stopped the leak completely or hid it so well I could no longer detect it. Win-win situation! When discovered (again), the damage can be extensive. That water constantly dripping over beams is not something you'd want to see in ten or twenty years.
