X-Com flavoured casemod

I'm looking again now (all the same sites as before but hoping to find something new!) and I keep coming across these wannabe Ethereals... Cultist Infantry

The one that really bugs me is the X-Com side as I just can't find good ones. I need unarmoured, armed troops for the ones in overalls or armoured and armed with no helmets for personal. And I do want to emphasise someone as a squad leader so I need a handful of one type and then one of the next tier...

Yeah they've got way too much exposed haven't they? I wondered if they'd look the part with their human faces removed and the void painted black to replicate the shadow from the hood but would probably be a bit wierd even then! Best thing would be to elongate the hoods and robes but I'm not really a modeller...

Anyway mini-update as I'm already here but no pics. I've started on the monitor last night as it was too late to start cutting and grinding the metal to build the UFO! I found some plasticard which has been cut to shape for the HUD frame and this morning I've mounted the screen to it. It already looks decidedly more Xcom than it did previously! I'm undecided on a method of mounting this to the case itself though so that's the biggest question right now...

Found these guys last night which are awesome sectoids but in 28mm scale (Warhammer-esque) So I think if I put together a wargame after this project is over I'll use a bigger scale. I think it works better in big scae anyway as small scale is really for large pitched battles (ancients, napoleonic etc) while larger scales are good for X-Commish commando type fights.

Do we have any wargamers here as if I decide to go ahead with this it would make more sense to do it in bulk and box up a few sets to sell. I imagine I'd concentrate on the farm scenery again and make 16-25 boards of scenery to give a 4x4 or 5x5 terrain with maybe a bunch of commies, sectoids and a small UFO. Anyone interested will have to let me know as I'd really love to do it but can't justify it just for myself really...

But yes, back to the current project! I'm off to grind down my internal UFO walls now and then once that's done I'll be positioning it on the actual case and getting down to some scenery and detailing.

And now I've done a bit more (though not much) I will take the time to load up some images.

First here's the screen mounted to it's backplate, very early stages but actually seems to be an easier prospect than anticipated.

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture125.jpg

The white is the plasticard, screen is obvious and on the right is a little power convertory thing for the backlight... Though it's almost invisible there's an additional strip of plasticard below the screen to act as a shelf but it's primary fixing are 4 screws, one at each corner. Another screw secures the bottom of the board on the right and it's kept nice and close to the board with another piece of plasticard to it's right which prevents the top moving right as the wires want it to!

Here's exactly the same image but with the template for the finished work in place at the front. I need to fill 7mm of gap before I start putting the detailed front panels on but it shoudln't be too big a job. It's already as sturdy as it needs to be so I'll just build the rest kind of like a box! If anyone has some buttons laying around that could work as the level up/down or 'OK' switches that'd be great as I don't have anything suitable yet! Note the up/down are slightly recessed so normal keyboard ones aren't ideal...

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture126.jpg

NExt I have a few pics of the UFO itself starting with the template and initial cutting of the floor-panel from months ago! I just cut out a paper template, glued it to the metal then marked round it and cut her out! Soemtimes the simple plans really are the best!!!

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/CaseBuild006.jpg

I cut a strip of 20mm high sheetmetal to start making the walls yesterday evening but only just tidied up the edges today. I had about 200mm of the stuff from the first length I cut but for now I just used 110mm of it to test the theory behind UFO construction on one corner of it!

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture124.jpg

Remember this is the inner wall for the craft as the outer wall will be curved as it is in the game. Not looking forward to trying to get that right mind you! Anyway this means the inside needs to be as neat as possible but due to the underfloor elements I'll be detailing later it doesn't matter so much at the bottom. With these needs as guidelines I soldered the bottoms of all 3 pieces on the inside and did the corners on the outside. I used simple tape to hold the pieces in place while I worked and while it did the job nicely it has left some nasty residue thanks to the heat so will need a lot of work to get the shine back in places!

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture127.jpg

The images are as good as always so it's hard to tell what it really looks like but I'd say the finish is 'adequate'. It looks a bit messy but ultimately the only part of this construction that will be visible is the inside walls and they look perfect so it's good enough!

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture128.jpg

Finally here's one of it upside down to give an idea of the completed model but of course it's hard to tell while it's so incomplete. The roof will of course have the square tiled pattern on it and most of it will be missing completely to allow a nice view of the interior. The walls will be round and the whole thing will be detailed with the doors and 'windows' etc.

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture129.jpg

Anyone who spent more than a few seconds comparing the images in my last last post will have noticed I'm lacking one thing in comparison to the ingame sprites and that's the height:width ratio. The game tiles are only about 1.6 times as high as they are wide, whereas mine are 2x as high as they are wide. That gives me narrower and taller buildings and details but although it's noticeable I think it'll still give me a result I'm more than happy with.

The UFO will be the biggest contrast as in the game it appears very long and wide but quite short. Mine will of course be taller than the in-game sprites but hopefully it won't be too great a difference. At least at such an early stage as this it would be easy for me to shave off a few mm to bring the height down if I deem it necessary...

Tell you what though, this will be the only UFO I construct loyally and from metal  It's going to be hard work, use a lot of tools and take a long time!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

There will be an update for this shortly as I've been working on (read : starting) the landscaping today. The buildings are both now sited, a final arrangement is decided and I've added anotehr piece of wood to part of the case to account for the depth of each buildings real stone floors. After filling sanding and a coat of brown paint all over I'm ready to start adding the soil, gravel and grass which will cover much of the case. I'm having difficulty deciding on what feature to fill a final corner of the case with so I'll put it to a vote shortly but I'm wanting to get the gravel down before I post the update (maybe soil and grass on the left side too as it happens)

For now however I wish to pick some brains before I take the final plunge and order my miniatures. Please note that while I am fishing for opinions, simply saying 'I don't like x' or 'y doesn't look like it's meant to' doesn't really help me unless you can produce a more suitable miniature that does what the ones I link to don't ;)

Sorry I can't just post up images but for some reason it won't let me with these links...

So I really want sectoids v personal armour. I've also included a possibility for Snakemen as they come from the same website as all my trooper options and therefore could be bundled...

First there are a few options for the troopers... Remember, personal armour places a huge emphasis on shoulder and chest armour. These options all have helmets which will be removed in favour of human heads so ignore the 'Halo' theme!

These guys emphasise the chest armour a little better than other options I've found and though covered in pockets and such their legs are relatively unprotected

https://www.criticalmassgames.com/images/arcfleetpainted/AFLR1-600.jpg

These next few are all rifle infantry in varying poses. They have more leg armour, less shoulder protection and chest protection that's not so visible...

https://www.criticalmassgames.com/images/arcfleetpainted/AFSR5-600.jpg

https://www.criticalmassgames.com/images/arcfleetpainted/AFSR7-600.jpg

These troops are all from Critical Mass Games, take a look if you think you can find better :)

Also worth noting by CMG are the Astagar Fighter Mercenaries. Yup, skinny snakemen with a dental plan! I think they could work though with some attention to painting...

https://www.criticalmassgames.com/images/mercenaries/MERC8-600.jpg

Finally to polish off the trooper selection is our Power Armoured Squad Leader if I decide to go that way... His Eye-cam thing is on the wrong side but you wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't told you and it's a prototype so get over it

https://www.15mm.co.uk/images/hof52rs_1ws.jpg

15mm.co.uk make some neat stuff and I'll probably also source my unarmoured heads from here if I place a purchase with them!

So what's left? Sectoids of course!!! I really want them as my foe, otherwise why go for the most common UFO in the most common scenery without the most common enemy to boot! Here are the options as already posted (but it seems images ARE working this time)

As already mentioned, these guys by 15mm.co.uk have my favourite heads so if the sizes are similar enough I may steal their noggins but the weapons are too campy and bodies are just totally Mars Attacks...

https://www.15mm.co.uk/images/HOF51_scenicws.jpg

Now onto my last of only 3 websites Rebel Minis who make some decent greys in a small scale. These are the ones used in the game posted by Thor in fact...

https://www.miniaturereview.com/UserFiles/Reviews/Rebel%20Miniatures%20Greys.jpg

They also come unarmed and the same website does ugly looking 'Zetans' too but they're off the list...

A final noteworthy is the comical yet good looking greys from Reaper Miniatures though sadly they're unlikely to suit my purposes here...

https://www.reapermini.com/graphics/gallery/4/50130_w_1.jpg

And lastly, here is my next purchase, a 28mm scale grey alien that I'd love to see holding a plasma cannon :oh: Thankyou Tengu models!

https://www.tengumodels.co.uk/userimages/tengu%2028mm%20greys%20group.jpg

They've been shutdown temporarily but I'm happy to note I've just checked and they're back! If only I had money in the bank I'd buy a batch now but alas it must wait. And yes I do of course realise these are a larger scale than the case I'm building. They'll be used in the next project :P

Not got any plans right now Mortimer, just trying to complete the first project which is the PC before I go onto the wargame! I believe there are several sets of rules already out there though so all I'd be hoping to do is find some good miniatures and make a bit of scenery and such.

What I'd really like to do is have the miniatures custom made but in order to do that I'd need a lot of people to want it. Will work out some maths when I've finished my current mission but I'm thinking about creating an unofficial boxed X-Com board game with a copy of the rules, a nice selection of units and some basic scenery to get people started. Wouldn't be too cheap but would be very cool if I can manage it

I like the first personal armor and second sectoid. Snakemen look like they are about double the length of the in game ones, second personal armor looks too much like power armor and the first sectoids are downright comical. The power armor you found just needs paint and you'd have something that looks exactly like in the game.

Thanks for the input Jman  I'm inclined to agree, I think the 1st troopers are a closer match to personal armour and depending on casting quality I can always file off some of the extra detail like the leg webbing... The power armour is just a god-send isn't it? Who'd have thunk I'd find something SO similar?! And as you say I think everything will come down to painting in the end. The personal armour will look a lot more like personal armour once the Halo helmets are gone and they're painted that blue (while fighting in green fields haha)

As for sectoids, the first ARE way too comical but I do like the heads, much more attitude and the other options all have hideous eyes. They just look like they've been stuck on there! The 15mm.co.uk ones are also the only ones with recognisable mouths and that makes a difference too imo. I would like to see how the snakemen come out with a little work, add the overbite, shoulderpads for all etc. But only 3 of the 5 models provided are really possible to work with and they're expensive for something that, as you say, isn't quite right...

Anyway I reckon 8 troops in personal armour will do which is

Ok here's the next real update and the first few steps of turning a wooden board into an X-Com diorama! First problem to overcome was the depth of flooring in the buildings I've constructed, it adds an extra 2-3mm of unwanted height to them as previously mentioned... Luckily I had some of the wood I used to build the case left over as spare so I used it to fashion a sort of 'hill' on the left side of the case which can be seen in the first few pics...

Here are the 2 pieces I used before being attached and with the buildings removed so you can see the recesses that will hide the extra height for me.

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture134.jpg

Here's a low view with the buildings in place, the edges have been sanded to quite an angle but will also be filled shortly to achieve the gentlest possible slope.

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture130.jpg

The front door to the larger building shows the level somewhat.

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture132.jpg

And a shot of the small shed does an even better job of it.

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture131.jpg

Behind the large building, I had to recut the hole for the CPU fan.

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture133.jpg

Here are some overview shots of the new landscape and one in which I've removed everything but the stone floor of the small shed for comparison...

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture137.jpg

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture135.jpg

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture136.jpg

After 8 pictures of the above I only seem to have 1 of the filling but it was a fairly straight-forward and boring process of fill, dry, sand. I only used a single coat as there will soon be paint, dirt, gravel and grass on top of this whole board

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture138.jpg

I seem to have slacked off with pictures of the board painted too but again it's only a minor change in colour so nothing interesting anyway!

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture139.jpg

Here's an image with the hill completed and the whole board ready for further detail. Thankfully the lines I drew on earlier are still visible. For those wondering why I painted it brown when it's all going to be covered up, it's just in case I lose a lot of topping over the years. Brown spots will be practically unnoticeable while the yellow-white of the wood could detract from the remainder of the case considerably...

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture140.jpg

The last job I did before this update was to lay the gravel on all areas that needed it and I have a massive amount left so will have to think of another use for it at a later date! I mixed up a thin water/pva mix first and literally painted it onto the areas I wanted to detail, first laying down a coat of soil and leaving it to dry overnight.

Sadly I have no images of the soil and after I laid the gravel this morning it's practically invisible but I laid it for the same reason as I've done most thigns here the way I have. Just trying to bring as much realism to the scene as possible! Also I'm sure the soil will become more visible with time as the gravel begins to deteriorate. It will add to the natural look of the scene rather than being a hard-edged effect and I may also deliberately thin the gravel down in areas later to simulate frequently trodden paths. Anyway here are the last pics of the gravel being laid down, none of the process all of result!

Here is the area I marked down for gravel with a main access to the front, pathway to the shed and entrances to both buildings. There is also a small path leaving the rear of the large barn.

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture141.jpg

Here's a slightly closer image of the courtyard area (yes I know, not true to the game but give me a break hey :P)

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture142.jpg

And finally a super close up which was intended to show a few areas where there is some soil showing through the gravel. It's hard to see but basically the darker areas are soil...

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture143.jpg

I may detail the gravel further once the whole case is complete as it's all very light in colour and a little too uniformed to represent realistic gravel. For now though it's worked out just as I'd hoped and the slope of the board has become a very gentle one as desired so success up to this point!

My next hob is to fill in the remaining gaps with soil before 'sowing' the grass! I'll post some images of that when it's done, probably over the next few days. For now I'll be leaving the 'field' area where the UFO will be crashed and the top right section of the board will now most likely house an apple orchard with a surrounding hedge like the one in the game. I'm struggling to source small enough trees though as they need to be between 20-30mm high at the very most and all the models I can find are about double that due to being based on full size trees rather than the small ones in UFO.

Anyway here is a final image just to round off the update. This is how we're looking so far but the UFO is upside-down so none of what's visible in this image will be when it's done! I've placed it here to illustrate how it ould look if placed at an angle though and I'm pretty pleased with it as an idea so I'll probably 'crash' it through the top of the case so it case be partially buried. Right now I'm concentrating on everything BUT the UFO while I wait on some better solder though as the job thus far has been a nightmare and I want to keep the joins as clean as possible...

Please comment as feedback is part of the reason I'm sharing this build :oh:

Wowie-wowowow!!

It's simply fantastic to see the pieces coming together and a semblance of the big picture finally forming, Veteran.

Your good planning is clearly paying off at this stage, given the fitting of the diverse elements look sound enough.

https://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa460/Tim_Munt/X-Com%20Case%20Build/Picture141.jpg

I expect you'll be paving that top floor as well.

And don't forget the doors... :oh:

::

I can almost imagine the different fire-teams silently sweeping the area, and then:

- "Is that scrunching sound what I think it is?"

- "Yep, rookie on the gravel, Sarge..."

- "Christ; why do they have to be so finely potty trained?..."

:P

- "Is that scrunching sound what I think it is?"

- "Yep, rookie on the gravel, Sarge..."

HAHAHA  Sounds about right based on the life expectancy of some of these troopers huh?!

The first floor of the large barn is planked, think it would take a very clever farmer to pave it ;) And doors are still somewhat of a sorepoint as of right now so I remain undecided. I'm currently on the hunt for apple trees in a super small scale but having minimal luck. Also need a hedge to run round the orchard of course and at this rate it'll be practically the ONLY thing I don't make myself from scratch :oh: Maybe I'll go with sponges just so I can say I did but I really want a better look in the final scene than something as quick and cheap as that...

Other dilemmas include the possibility that I don't have enough of the material used for the paving to build my 25cm drystone wall... I've taken a liberty here and made the 'plowed field' from the game a 20x20 piece rather than 10x10 as it would've had a really plain and dodgy look if I'd stuck completely with the way the game creates maps.

That said I have stayed completely true to the 10x10 grid with 0 rotation so it does closely resemble something you could conceivably make in an editor. If only there was a 'gravel' tile in game I could do it! Anyway back to pending dilemmas...

I still want more input for which miniatures to use as I get some cash tomorrow and would like to start ordering the last few bits and bobs for this case. Right now my plan is to finish everything but the UFO as that's hardest and I want to be able to see a result by getting some progress made on the landscape detail.

I got the soil down on the left side of the case after my last post and it's made a big difference actually. Replacing the painted wood surface with realistic looking dirt really brings the whole diorama one step closer to being believable. Still a good way to go yet though...

Another thing I'm yet to decide on is how to create the ridges and furrows in my plowed field... I thought about cutting grooves into the box and then thought about adding strips to the top of the box but neither option comes with a means of implementation that slaps me in the face so I'm undecided. I'm thinking that cocktail sticks (or the longer skewers ideally) may gicve me the right kind of scale so I may go with that if I can get hold of a bunch of them.

Thankfully I think that's me out of dramas :P So to recap, I need Hedge, Trees, Wall, field and miniatures...

Advice is welcomed!!!

I'm becoming increasingly convinced that I may well have to make my own actually  Not having much luck finding hedge the right size either but I saw some 27x10mm stuff that I could probably turn into the 10x20 I need. I also found these which are intended for architectural plans. What do you reckon?...

Cheers Pete, it was initially placed like that just because I've only done half of the sides but it has inspired me to dig it in as a much more angled crash than originally planned. All these touches should add to the realism of a crashed spaceship on a farm lol

The stuff on the first site is nice Thor but the hedges are too small sadly (nicest ones I've seen with that kind of construction though) I'd like to keep the trees and hedges fairly soft in appearance so am trying to avoid cork and styrene and what-have-you but if it looks good who am I to argue?

And I think I may have just found the winning site...

Found some 18mm trees for 74p each

Are you going for the tall hedge wall like those used in the orchards, or a more natural looking low hedge?

Haven't made one before, but I was just thinking that a few strips of balsa board or plywood painted in earth tones, covered in glue and having some clump foliage attached to it could achieve something similar to the the tall hedge walls used in the orchards. Would have to be rather densely packed. A drill and a file could be used to make a few peek-a-boo spots.

Cheers NKF that's not a bad thought if it comes to DIY! I'm going to stick with the full height one as that's how the game does it. I figure it's to keep out scrumpers or something haha

I'm pretty much out of stuff to do now until I order some of the stuff I need... Can't build the stone wall until I've decided how to crash the UFO and the same goes for texturing the field. Likewise I could finish laying the soil in the top-right corner but I'll be cutting a hole through the wood there later if I decide to angle the UFO impact like above. Don't have the hedge or trees fro the orchard, not got scatter for the grass and still haven't managed to rust the roofing for my 2 buildings... Add to that the need for minis to finish things off and for my mate to bring me some better solder to finish the basic UFO construction with and I'm pretty much stuck!

Which makes it all the more important I get some stuff ordered today I think  Will get on to the missus and have her put something in my bank as I'm overdrawn this month :oh:

Just emailed these guys to see if they can send me some images or something as it's vitally important that all the colours match each other... Also found this image which I sent them as reference...

Suddenly I'm liking the garlic trees again...

https://www.modelshop.co.uk/pub/files/products/landscaping/.thumbnails/1255355116_LT_foam_w200_h200.jpg

Some red tipped pushpins for the apples and that strikes me as a pretty much perfect mirror of what's in the game. The other ones listed above may look more realistic but that's not the only thing I'm trying to do. Making it look like X-Com is the most important thing and I think these may be the trees for the job...

Shame really as the other ones are cheaper lol

I also asked if these guys would be interested in a sponsorship deal as they do display cases and laser cutting so I'm thinking they could make me a case and also the speaker grills (holes not cut yet) and also the casename itself. Will see what they say but would certainly be nice as currently this build is sponsor free!

Thanks SV, it's actually a really fun project as it gives me a dedicated X-Com platform AND some much needed scratch-building practice  Think I'm going to go with those round trees for the orchard, just looks more like the game...

I'm looking for a way to cut the price of my mini purchase now but you'd be amazed how hard it is to find heads. That's all I want, just something with human heads I can chop off and give to the troopers but nooooo lol

Those trees look just a bit too perfectly rounded perhaps, but as you say, well handled it might do the trick.

Well we shall soon see, I emailed these guys and the mini suppliers today about the stuff I want. Also got some better solder today so have extended the signal wires for the screen (not tested yet!!!) and can crack on with the UFO again now while I wait to place my orders.
