May 7, 200917 yr Awesome. Drop what you're doing and go and watch it now. Yes, there is a slight element of cheese in there in a very few places but I really like what they've done with the universe. So much more realistic with many nice touches. If they carry on like that then they've blown just about every other sci-fi show/film out there out of the water bar none - DO NOT DEFY ME :) ...so yeah it was an alright film. I won't bother posting any spoilers as that'd just ruin it for everyone.
May 7, 200917 yr Author Funny. As. F*ck. If he were on screen for more than 2 minutes at the time they'd have to call it Pegg Trek as he'd have run off with the show.
May 8, 200917 yr Author There are some things that will be funnier if you're a total geek like me - Kirk beating the Kobayashi Maru test being a fine example. The Vulcans seem a little more in touch with their emotions, but that fits more closely with several of the books and is just more realistic anyway. The visuals will blow you away. I read somewhere someone said the opening few minutes are the most spectacular from a film in a long, long time and I'll just add that that opening sets the pace, atmosphere and general impressiveness for the following two hours. Even the end credits were neat. There are a few cheesy moments and things that seem just a little convenient as with all sci fi, but on the whole it's great.
May 8, 200917 yr A bit selfconscious and cowboyish, but yeah. Good use of a midnight premiere. Spectacular visuals. Very.
May 8, 200917 yr Author Yup Starfleet now feels like more of a fleet and the cowboyish nature fits in with the woke frontier-ness of it, but you just couldn't have all that confrontation on a spaceship without everybody dying very quickly.
May 17, 200917 yr Author I finally got around to reviewing this over at The Last Outpost. Take a peek - I kept spoilers out as best I could. Hope the review convinces any of you sitting on the fence to hop over it and go and watch it - you won't be disappointed (There's also an article covering my thoughts about the iPhone as well for those interested in it or considering buying one ).
July 23, 200916 yr Nice review Pete, sorry it took so long for me to respond - this was buried. Being a TOS (The Original Series) fan, I was happy to hear a new Star Trek film was out. As of yet, I haven't seen it yet, and even after all the glowing reviews I've read I'm still skeptical that I'd enjoy it. My biggest beef is that all the characters are so close in Starfleet Academy. C'mon, these guys were all from various backgrounds, walks of life, and age. Surely most of them were in different graduating classes. I'm not saying that all these people getting together would be impossible, just unlikely. (Think back to when you were in high school, did you hang out with or associate with people in higher classes or just your own? Nuff said). Then comes the issue of explaining how all these characters managed to get on the same Galaxy-Class Starship years later (though I think it's mostly the Captain's prerogative who he wants onboard and serving under him). Right now, I'm chalking the success of this movie up to the writers who obviously wanted to appeal to the younger, non-trek crowd, not die-hard vets like me from yester-year. Now I hear the cast is signed up for two more sequels. Great. More of the same. Next thing you'll know the Trek franchise will be reduced to nothing more than a Hannah Montana kid-fest, not an adult film presenting thought-provoking and intellectual subject matter. Speaking of Galaxy-Class Starships, I ran across a cool pic of the original cast posing in front of the Space Shuttle Enterprise when it was dedicated way back in 1976: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ef/Space_shuttle_enterprise_star_trek.jpg Look at all them bell-bottoms! Where the heck was Shatner though? He wasn't working on TJ Hooker yet, so, where was he? Embittered by the cast and publicity most likely. - Zombie
July 23, 200916 yr Author You mean Constitution Class. You can get around most continuity issues with an old faithful plotdevice they wheel out in the first five minutes of the film. That potentially lets them change anything they like. There are some things that will get on your nerves in this film, and you have to remind yourself that certain character dynamics have yet to evolve by the end if the film, but by the end it is very much the right cast playing this old crew well. So if you cam get over the few technological stupidities in the film then it's essentially classic Trek.
