Ashfelt
laser squad nemesis is a good multiplayer Xcom like game. No research, but same kind of squad based game play. I believe its made by the same guys who made the original Xcom games.

[W1Z]Rich
Someone mentioned Fallout Tictacs (heh) having a Multiplayer aspect. Well, the Multiplayer aspect was detached from the Singleplayer game completely, in that you would not have a Campaign as such, you would just have scenario missions. One interesting aspect of Tictact Multiplayer though, was that your party would be saved, so it was possible for your characters to advance through playing multiplayer games. This was only useful though if you were playing with the same people in a designated series of games, because there was always the possibility of having a hacked character spoiling a game. To get around this, they had a system where you could create your party on a points-based system, which included stats allocations, and equipment loadouts. This would allow for a one-off game, where people start with anything from a beginner team, to a highly-skilled heavily-armed team, depending on preference. Another interesting aspect of Tictacs muliplayer was the various "Roleplay" servers which were around at it's peak. These were constantly-evolving worlds, such as a city, with different characters playing the roles of Mayors, Criminals, Police, Shop-owners etc. I can't see how that relates to UFO:A at the moment though. It would be nice to see Multiplayer implemented in such a Skirmish form at a later date, but as anyone who has played Multi Theft Auto: Vice City will know, it's not as easy as you would think to add multiplayer code to a Singleplayer game.
