Ok, my initial thoughts...   Firstly, there is no reason to play in open world. At least for a looong time, until you upgrade your ship considerably. Not the Sidewinder you are given mind you, it CAN

That mission is pretty much a decoy for now... So what... Took a shot of the alien site though. Last days of my Cobra mk. III.   https://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b348/SpaceVoyager/Za%20net/Screensho

Elite Dangerous' long-running storyline, The Azimuth Saga, is about to reach its dramatic finale. The controversial figure known as Salvation is preparing to unleash the Proteus Wave, a superweapon he claims will stop the Thargoid menace once and for all.

The finale of the Azimuth Saga, coinciding with the release of Update 13 for Elite Dangerous: Odyssey on Tuesday August 9th, will pave the way for future Elite Dangerous content updates throughout the rest of 2022 and beyond.

For any Commanders who wish to join the intensifying fight against the Thargoids, they should head to the HIP 22460 system where they will find it swarming with Anti-Xeno Conflict Zones. Some of these zones feature capital ships from the Federation, Empire and even the Alliance, as they attempt to buy Salvation the time he needs to construct the Proteus Wave.

Players will be updated on Salvation’s progress in building the Proteus Wave via in-game broadcasts until the moment it is activated. Commanders won't want to miss what happens next.

I tried playing Elite a couple of days ago and found I just can't any more. At least not yet. A serious exploration expansion would probably draw me back in, or at least a player organized expedition. As is, I just feel no drive. Also, I have a photobook to make. I promise this every year...

@SV: you mean the 3D Holographic virtual photobook? I'm sure that will eventually happen. ? The thing to keep in mind is that it's making memories that's really important and the fact you've made that possible for your family many times now should result in gratitude and happiness, not punishment. ?

I hear the bubble is burning... Nice change. I might actually hop back in and see it for myself.

My "home" is a station around an ammonia world, a move to another system might be a good idea. Ammonia worlds are a prime target for Thargoids, presumably they evolved on one so... prime real estate. Also, several more Stargoids are incoming.

I actually might get back into the cockpit. It's been a while.

I kinda enjoyed the start of the Thargoid war but it soon transpired that we really CAN'T do anything yet and that further updates will bring the tools for the next stage and so forth. In the meantime we were able to just grind and grind with no chance of winning. That sucks and I got out again. This update doesn't seem to bring much progress, I'll probably skip.

So I finally kicked myself back into the game. The latest Titan community goal (which would be its utter destruction) brings really, REALLY cool rewards, 5 double engineered SCO frame shift drives (FSD). To the uninitiated; FSD is the engine that lets you hop among the stars will both take you further AND faster, which is... a BIG deal in Elite.

Also, the addition of SCO (supercruise overcharge) is an insanely big addition to the game. Basically, where you had to wait for literal minutes to get anywhere previously, you get there in seconds with an SCO FSD. You still need to close in to the travel target as you used to, but with an SCO FSD it means that the start of the journey and most of the travel distance can be next to skipped. All travel times have been at least halved (for really short distances), but mostly reduced to a fraction of the time it previously took to get anywhere. Freaking great!

That seemed like a bitter-sweet change as basically one would need to change the FSDs of all your ships (I have like 12 ships, some have A LOT more) and then engineer them. Meaning grinding for engineering materials to no end. Though even that has been changed - now it is a set number of repetitions while previously you never knew how many more it will take to get your jump range to its final state.

ANYway, with the community goal I'll get the engines all prepped up.

Titan gameplay is now far more accessible as you don't need to unlock anything any more. Just buy it all from a rescue ship. Which was definitely a prerequisite for me. No freaking way will I do some huge number of repetitions of some actions just to join in on the thing you actually want to do. FD has finally realised that if they want to keep any players, they need to let them play the game, the content that actually is fun. And Titan gameplay definitely is fun. For an hour or two. Then, like everything in Elite, it is a repetition of the same. I'm glad I haven't tried it before, so it is a novelty now, at the grand finale.

@SV: Well, well, look who's flying again!

Feels like some fresh incentive is being pumped into the game in a very overt manner. From what you describe the aforementioned rewards are what will make the game actually... rewarding at last. About darn time too.

Sounds to me like everything is in place for the Titans to be turned into space dust in a hurry!

Which happened yesterday! The destruction was seen in-game today, 7:45 UTC+1. I actually watched it streamed at work. :D

Feels childishly cool to have participated. I even ended up in the top 25% of Sol defenders, which means a really hefty addtion of credits to go along those FSDs. According to the in-game info I should get a billion credits. To put things into perspective - in all my years of playing Elite I gathered slightly less than 8 billions (though amassing credits has long stopped to be my goal), now a billion drops for a few hours of playing. Makes Sol look kinda important. ;)
