  1. I changed the invisible floor to be also a "No Floor" (byte 32), it allows door to be properly opened from inside, and makes unit fall through to stand on the actual ramp on level 0. It still doesn't fix opening door from the outside. I thought TFTD fixed this, I remembered there were doors at the top of stairs. But no, never directly adjacent - there's always a floor tile.
  2. I recently patched xcom with the combo patch, then added my further modifications, and started a new game. I think Lightning is a tiny bit overdone. The outer walls in MCD have BigWall bit set now, and also the first leg has it too. That's exactly the kind of data error in the original game that these patches aim to fix I also wonder, is there a reason why all four invisible pillars have separate entry in pck? I changed it to reuse just one. Another thing broken in original game, but not fixed by patch, is Skyranger - it uses really weird LOS templates in the nose section. I use them fixed with no line of fire possible.
  3. If your GEOSCAPE.EXE is 382957 bytes long (I believe this is true for v1.4), then change byte at offset +0x175BC from 0x3C (60) to 0x40 (64). This makes IGLOB.DAT have correct length. I can double-check this at home in the evening.
  4. This is not the only problem with mountainous terrain, also there are three wooden trunks (entries 71, 72 & 73), which in original version have incorrect "damaged tile" property (71->73, 72->74, 73->75). This needs to be bumped by one too. Maybe you could update your fix? I have ready file, if there's need.
  5. The CE version uses different indexing for footsteps, which is interpreted straight forward as index into the .CAT file. However, DOS version does some magic, and behaves in the way described in the table. Try using value 7 again, but this time in DOS, you'll hear proper footsteps in the snow. I'm afraid the fix for polar terrain will be platform dependent.
  6. There is Żywiec beer, top one of standard factory line produced beers, nothing bad actually. Also you may want to try Okocim Zagłoba, it has normal alcohol contents, but is brewed from more malt which gives little more taste.
  7. Happy birthday NKF! Although I haven't visited these fora since long time ago, and even dismantled old pc I kept around for playing X-Com, I am no less proud to share day of birth with person like you.
  8. Thanks! I have no choice but to live with this brand new shiny front digit
  9. Yesterday I witnessed some illogically ordered checks and events in single geoscape loop. I ordered an Interceptor to attack an UFO. Exactly the moment when my plane catched alien ship, they decided to land. When dogfight window appeared, on the globe there was already a green 'x'. Then, the UFO has outrunned my interception! Alien racer?
  10. You're right Zombie. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention on the physics lecture, or maybe the lecturer was just wrong. But he did say that. Or something like that... :-)
  11. Speaking of microwave ovens, it is possible to overheat water past 100°C before it actually starts boiling. It's unknown yet how it happens.
  12. Moths (Beaver and Steve readers will know why)
  13. I'd like to test it, is there a way to replicate the wrong-way turn? If yes, how? And yes, straight movement is 4 TU per tile, diagonal is 6 per tile.
  14. Are you sure the turning took TUs? Because I know that when soldier turns to direction you order him to move, he doesn't use TU for that, but I'm not sure about turning the other way (more than 180°). I don't remember it ever happening. On the other hand: soldier does spend TU to turn to direction he's ordered to shoot.
  15. My friend has shown me once similar mystery of longevity: near his house, outside grocer's shop there's a white stain on the sidewalk, most people think its just dried paint that somebody spilled. Actually, it is bottle of sour cream dropped 4 of 5 years ago. It was very hot summer, and the cream immediately dried and hardened enough to last till today.
  16. 1. in DOS version (1.4) it was possible to alter music volume with +/- keys on numeric keypad. Try it, maybe it works in CE too. 3. there are no patches for windows version (however there are unofficial modified versions)
  17. Try using different refresh rates. Go to display properties -> settings -> advanced -> monitor. It might work for you. For me it somewhat does. Somewhat, because then next problems appear.
  18. The Pizza: For 1-2 people, if it's my only meal I can eat the whole pizza alone. cake: 25 dag of flour 15-20 g of yeast half a glass (125 ml) of warm water with milk teaspoon of sugar salt olive (oil) paste (just mix the ingredients): 2 spoons of tomato paste spoon of ketchup (or teaspoon of vinegar) salt, pepper, herbs 25 dag of shredded cheese (or less, if you don't like melted cheese like I do, which is very much) herbs optional other toppings (everything sliced): onion tomatoes sausage, salami, bacon mushrooms -if you're gonna use them, clean them with a brush, slice, and fry in oil olives ... don't use too many ingredients, if pizza is too high it could be raw inside and burnt outside -crumble the yeast into a bowl, sprinkle it with teaspoon of sugar -when it's melted add almost all liquid and about 2/3 of flour -mix it with a spoon, it should have consistency of thick cream -cover the bowl with a cloth and put it in warm place (oven set to 50°C) -after few minutes the dough should have bubbles, take it out -add almost all rest of flour, pinch or two of salt, spoon of olive -in case dough is too thin/thick add remaining flour/water -knead the dough (until it doesn't stick to everything), make a ball of it and oil it so it doesn't dry -again put it in bowl, cover with a cloth and put into the oven (50°C) -after a quarter dough ball should double its size, take it out then -roll a thin pizza cake, grease it with olive -(optional) bake it gold in oven set to 200° -put the toppings on the cake, eg. like this: tomato paste, about 1/3 of cheese, other toppings, bit of paste again, herbs, rest of cheese. Remember to do it equally on the whole surface. I often put few salami slices on the top. -bake it in 200°C for 20 minutes -cut it into pieces, and take them on plate by one, leave the rest in oven so they don't cool down I learned to make a pizza from scratch in the spring this year, and about week later I saw a tv ad. One company introduced ready to roll-and-bake pizza dough! I was outraged. Everyone could make a pizza then... but none of them are match to mine!
  19. Not guilty. But I did kill a fish last week. On a lake, from a rowing boat, using a wooden thrown harpoon I made for this. The fish was delicious. Never ever have I ever wanted to make a quicksave. Guilty. It was holidays few years ago and I played games 10+ hours a day. I stopped after this.
  20. In the old non patched version of UFO, one sound from sample2.cat file is missing. In patched version it is overwritten with some junk (part of makefile of some kind?): del ufo2exe\ufo.exe tasm /j.386p /w+ /ml /m /p /s /zi /d__WATCOMC__=900 apw_asm.s tasm /j.386p /w+ /ml /m /p /s /zi /d__WATCOMC__=900 digit.asm tasm /j.386p /w+ /ml /m /p /s /zi /d__WATCOMC__=900 timer32.s wcc386 -ms -3r -d2 -oa sound.c copy sound.obj ufo2exe copy timer32.obj ufo2exe copy digit.obj ufo2exe copy apw_asm.obj ufo2exe call mu It would say it was programmed in C and assembler (you can see Watcom C compiler and Turbo Assembler above). We can only guess what's the proportion. Looking into executables, in the tactical.exe and geoscape.exe you can find Watcom C compiler stamp, in the black.exe - Borland C++ compiler stamp.
  21. There was a revolver designed to use a suppressor: Nagant 1895. It was standard russian sidearm. It has non-removable cylinder that moves forward with each shot and seals the gases, also the revolver uses unique cartridges that serve as an additional sealing.
  22. They're still there, only in different file, as sound engine was rewritten in version 1.4. The file in named SAMPLE3.CAT and stores not only audio data, but .wav headers too. If you want to rip them there'll be no problem, any ripper will do that. If you want to make game use modified sounds you will have to remember to rebuild TOC of the file as well. If you want to have working animation with sound outside of the game, then I can't help, I think synchronisation between audio and video is stored somewhere else.
  23. I could use it too. Since I switched to Dvorak keyboard layout and put stickers on every key it's been constant battle with the rest of family who stubbornly refuse to even give it a try, and just plug the other keyboard.
  24. Doesn't mind control cause unit's TUs to be fully restored? I'm pretty sure it does, I heard you can exploit this when taking control over every quarter of four-spaced alien.
