  1. YOu can definitely see some of where they tried to do it though....
  2. I've always had trouble with bases for some odd reason.....
  3. One time, first month of the game, terror site.... I'm in the center of the map, bottom edge. Left of the skyranger is a warehouse, in front of it another warehouse. Above the skyranger is a road and then a HUGE park/open area covering half the map. All of my guys were packing a normal rifle, an extra clip plus grenades and so on... I also had a medic and an explosives man. I step out of the skyranger, bam 2 sectoids standing right there, took them out but lost a man (no armor yet). Then i've got my troops fanning out and in the park i spot a sectoid on one side and 2 or 3 cyberdiscs on the other, plus i've got other bugs in/near the warehouses cutting off reinforcements/retreat for the guys in the park. The only thing i have that can touch the cyberdiscs is the high explosive packs........ i won.............after 2 hours (real time)......... with one survivor. Not fun
  4. Aziraphale/Break Mage, whatever it is now.... Nice to see you've picked up TFTD. I'm digging the new version of the sig.... just add on lobstermen to the ethereals.......... My personal tactic for the lobsters is (with xcomutil 9.X) 1. Gauss, lots and lots and lots of gauss..... with the unlimited ammo you just want to be careful. 2. MANY VERY Hungry angelfish, they eat anything..... including lobster
  5. Yea, its harder, its another good thing. The other thing i love about TFTD is the theme behind it. TFTD was really influenced by HP Lovecraft (the plotline and so on....)
  6. UFO & TFTD, with apoc ranking a close 2nd. I like both of the 1st 2, u can switch off with them. TFTD is a bit more fun though, i don't know why....
  7. That takes the fun out of the thing
  8. Bloody hell, i wish i'd seen this one (i wasn't playing when the last reply was up). I like the lobster recipie... and w/lobstermen you'll be needing to multiply the recipe by 6 or 7 (even with a half-tail)
  9. LOL, he could become a permanent passenger............. kind of a mascot that you stun on the first turn........
  10. MC in TFTD isn't anything compared to ethereals, from what i've seen. I've never had any serious trouble with bugs MCing my guys, OTOH, UFO didn't have lobstermen..... So i guess it blanaces out, almost. Tasoths are a dumbed-down ethereal, and mutons would be dumbed-down Lobstermen. I usually don't have morale problems, almost all of my troops have 50+ bravery, except for a few exceptionally good ones (in other categories) that have 40 bravery. The one's who get MCed, especially if they're just seamen, able seamen; get shot if they're in a dangerous position(i.e, inside the transport), otherwise i stun them. They still get sacked later on...... not the best financial solution, but it works.
  11. What modifications did u do to the gauss rifle?
  12. OK, with the terror site.... can you say HOT LZ? Keep your troops separated here.... sonic pulsers can do some nasty damage. Go slowly, save TUs to kneel and for a snap/auto shot. Conserve ammo, or the 2nd part is REALLY ugly...... lastly.... If it moves, shoot it!
  13. Ok, thanx. I take it this means that there isn't a "Not so dodgy pirate edition" though.....
  14. One of these days i'll get around to buying a legal copy too........ But in the mean time, two ?s for NKF, or anyone else who can answer them... Does givnig yourself the ability to research the next alien building let you enter? And, if not, is there a "not so dodgy" pirate edition?
  15. This came out in september, and their october deadline is long gone
  16. Ok, my two best soldiers........ one of them has 13 missions and 37 kills, the other has 16 missions and 58 kills i think, more importantly, they NEVER DIE, through coincidence or whatnot, i've finished terror sites with one of them at about 3 health, but they never die
  17. You know WHY the lobsterman didn't care????? LOBSTERMEN EAT GAUSS FOR BREAKFAST!!!!!!!! Dude, it takes about twice that to do in a lobsterman, he doesn't need to care about 3 gauss hits. By the way, i still hate lobstermen the most. I use xcomutil, mainly because i like the gauss weapons with unlimited ammo, its like the lasers. Problem: using gauss, lobstermen are a bitch to kill. Using anything: lobstermen are a bitch to kill
  18. I'm using an ancient laptop without sound, it makes the game harder as you can't hear guys croaking, but.... you don't hear the music and stuff, it keeps you a bit more relaxed. sadly
  19. Am i the only one who uses wall shooting for things. Shooting out part of or all of the walls can give you a line of sigt into a building, a line of fire into a building, etc..... Saves time when you can't find a door..... Other than some of these stupid uses, i've found some good ones (i had a hunch during a terror site and it payed off). One time i had a gillman come out of a building, then go back in. I knew he was in there and would reaction fire, but i had a good guess where he was hiding: So, i shot the wall right there with an auto shot. First shot blew off the wall, and i see a gillman standing there, the next shot took him down. It can come in useful. My question: Does anyone else use this tactic? Also: Grenades and explosives with timed fuses for demolition (remove obstcles or small homes....)
  20. OK, i agree, not reloading is the best way, i do reload sometimes, but you might learn something from RELOADING too, but never in the mission, always before i go in. Another way of learning important things is to go back and play the same battle with certain small variatons, a different LZ, a little change in tactics here, a smoke grenade there, you get the idea.... Though the missions that you retreat on or win after HOURS AND HOURS of playing arre always the best, its a certain feeling that comes with x-com, and you really learn alot, look at what you did, where men got killed, how to fix your tactics and change them. In general i've found that fluid, very adaptable tactics work well, take at the most 4 or 5 men to a group, usually two or three. Someone dies, send out another, base your plans on the map layout, look for where you think there might be a bug and o in and kill him/it. Develop contingincy plans, if he misses his shot when he goes into the room, then what? Have another guy ready to go in the side door to the room and nail th bug. You get the idea, but don't reload so you have no losses, its pointless P.S. the cooking lobsterman joke is mine, i'm sorry, it started like 4 or 5 months ago on the UFO comm centre forums.... the answer: best cooked in a garlic sauce with a touch of butter
  21. These are those rare and sentimental terror sites that i love. They take hours, you hardly ever win, and never with a 2 parter. Go to the terror site, play it, fight hard, when it looks really bad, conduct an orderly withdrawl back to the triton... You'll hate it, it'll suck, you'll have lost alot of good men for very little, so A. have your troops pick up the equipment and stuff off the dead lobster men (bring back to the triton, i think you keep it that way, not sure though), or just keep the terror site TARGETED by ANY craft until you get sonic weapons ready, it'll still be there as long as its always targeted hard to do for months though.........
  22. ok, ummmmmmm.... i said it was the activity site (i've never finished a bas mission, i'll do it in good time though) but even so... i think it was kind of tough but i really enjoy those missions, i mean: they can take a few hours to complete sometimes when they're hard, but its the thrill of doing them that makes it so enjoyable.
  23. I'm using xcomutil so the gauss weapons have unlimited ammo, like the laser's in UFO, which made them my main weapon.... Because i've run out of ammo, especially beofre i can use sonics but even so..... running out of ammo on any mission is bad, very bad, but you get great training in grenade use....
  24. Lobstermen are just plain bad.......lets face it however, i would really like to get some good recipies, so far all i've heard is roasting with a gauss rifle.... i've heard it tastes just like chicken
  25. umm........... this one took about 5 hours (nonstop playing, constant action, the works) to finish, it was a terror site.... it was the WORST sectoid/cyberdisk one i've ever seen. I started out on the bottom of the map, in the middle: on one side was the map edge, opposite that, a LARGE (like, 1/2 the map) park, and on the other sides were buildings. One word: crossfire (it was b4 i had any new weapons) I had what was literally 8 or 9 cyberdisks in the park, and had to kill them with HE (no HW with me), there were sectoids literally seeping out of the other buildings, so basically, i was pinned down because if you moved towards one place, the other 2 shot at you, i lost 8 men that day (out of 14, 4 stayed in the skyranger). OTOH, they didn't shoot into the transport (Though the triton makes great cover for troops...) and thank god it wasn't ethereals, though with them you don't need a crossfire. Did i mention my first ever terror site was chryssalid (it was my 3rd ever tac mission)
