  1. If you want to get a little spicy, you can get those util programs and add some buggies into the game at t'leth huh? I've tried the and the boring final match became interesting. Anyway, Try to get to T'leth with lack of amunition or human weapons only (not cheating) or even with hth (hand to ahnd) weapons......This is TOUGH
  2. Humm, to be honest, I'm not aware of this game so far. Therefore, few comments needs to be posted to give you a criteria before questionning the matching against these two games: X-com came up in early 90's, and was the very first strategy game to introduce turned based interface, weapon development, alien analysis to discover new tech. And this is only few thngs that makes X-com well supported by all of us. I'm quite shure that there could be better games (in terms of tech, design, ond others), but x-com is a cult. For over 10 years this game maintained its magic and still, gathering newbies to x-com world. As for the rest, I commonly agree with you, except that most of table top palyers hate PC's. Well, this is my point of view, cuz my folks do like both and I have seen loads of players here that agrees too....No big deal... Terror.
  3. Humm, a Trailler from X-Com Universe seems quite interesting so far. Latelly, there wasn't anything new popping up.   4. humm, try learning at the ufoapedia, the fast description of the usage may help you in dry combat comditions / underwater environment. In the other hand, getting the USG would work good too..
  5. Humm this is offtopic but lets see: T-rex look like, right? That can be the Tricene. I'm not shure is the nem is correct, but it is the equivalent of our Collecoath Sonic / DPL tank in the alien strike team. But if looks like humanoid, that can be the one with red eyes and a elephant nose who spits some kind of ball that can hits us and kill civilians. Use to appear on terror sites, but sorry, I can't remenber the name too. That alien is critical to research, so you can get the aquaplastic armour. And if you have already researched that, zrbite and the epower source, give the almighty flying suit, the latest armour. Can resist sonic cannon shot in the front.
  6. You guys are assuming that he does have the Psi Lab right? If not, how to identify the weak ones on your team? Easy: On yr regular missions against ethereals and sectoids, see who get mind ontroled or bezerk more often. Those are the weak ones. Dump them when you can or transfer them to other bases to let them to protect the bases in case of alien base raid against you. I use to keep using them in other missions against aliens with no psi capabilities. Some of them became good officers. But in the very end of the game, there is a risk of having a colonel or a captain with no psi capabilities, but whith skills the overpass the one with psi stenght. (this happens when you use the a lot more than the soldiers in missions against high psi strengh aliens), and a bunch of Sargents and Liutennants with consitions to run to Cydonia. In the ohter hand if you have psi lab, I stay with squaddie01. When I won Cydonia, the lowest soldier had 75 Psi strengh. Shooting the low psi strengh decreased moral in yr team!! Freezing them is also another alternative, but just in critical situations. Use the early stages of the gam eto id the low ones so gradually your team becomes strong enpugh to face those d a m m ethereal / sectiod commanders
  7. But you cannot keep adding short / long range radars for ever though. I think there is a limit of range for optimal number of radar that maximize the probability of IDing the UFO. I have seen that lot of people i've talked with that once with the hyperwave decorder, there is not need of the rest of radars. but he usg is not clear about that. In the same thinking, I conclude that just one of these decorder is also enough to detect the bugs. There will be cases that the UFO passes nearby yr base undetected, but his is not usual at all. Happens all the time, so if this is reasonable, I won't bothered at all, besides, keeping building radars all around just to detect what? One or two more UFOs??? No thanks.
  8. Humm, first of all, the topic inquires us to discuss wich one is the best game. Choosing any of the X-com game family does not make this offtopic so... Well, indeed the game is kinda easy due to a lot of factors. Lets not forget that the engine, the story, the weaponry equipment among lot of other items, was created in early 90's!!!! The game is a cult!!! That's why X-com is one of the most played strategy game ever and so far, there is X-com freaks all around the World, like you, me and all this guys in the forun. This game cannot be compared with others. The story line, the way the aliens came to Earth and striked against human race is unique!!!! Of course, there is some other games like Enforcer /Interceptor that is kinda different, but he spirit is the same! Apoc is goos too!! Probably the natural development of the Trama of X-com boardline! To whom claimed tftd is not interesting as UFO, please try playing it seriously until beat it before taking conclusions. Satisfaction guaranteed! Still, tftd is much harder than UFO due to a lot of reasons!!! Find it ou!!!
  9. Good idea! Once the triton is not as fast as anything in the game, That ship is the number one to use for search the area for alien bases or alien activity. Later on the game, switching to Leviathan (costs Zrbite) is another good idea though
  10. Guys, keep in mind that if any of you capture the Tasoth commander, DO NOT RESEARCH HIM in early stages of the game! IF you do so (before get the alien sub construction/manta/forgot/Leviathan) the Last ship will NEVER show up for research. This is a bug that my 1.2 v has and I'm not shuer if this bug has been fixed byt he moderators on this site, but once i've expirienced myself, take care.
  11. Humm, According to the USG, the buggies use to built one base per month or something next to that. And once the terror sites are mostly a reflection of an existing aliena base nearby, this can be a sign of an alien base. Go and sneak around. It can be worth it!!
  12. humm, since 2001 when I won the game, I've tried playing using some util programs to improve difficult and stuff. I actually didn't tried anything like re-setting this issue (granade tossing range), but it seamns worth to try it. Another option, is to start using the proxi granades too. I know it's not as powerfull as the sonic pulsers, but it can shake things out. Besides, if you're playing against aquatoids these granandes work well. Okay, I'm gonna raise the power to these gransdes and see what happens.
  13. Well I rather prefer the tftd (look at my nick)!!! Actually if you guys use some cheat util it can turn yr game a little more interesting tough. Of course this is only a a feeling but it can work out. In the other hand, playing UFO is kinda fun too, but the lack of reasonable equipment like HTH weapons are critical some times during the game.
  14. Sorry, but smoke granades s**ks big time!! I've hearded the the alien vision range aand reactions are far better that ours, so chucking a smoke granade for cover is almost as nothing. Well AFAIK, there is a lot of duddes that hates them, and the 80 items limit doesn't help much...... :hmmm:
  15. He he he! This discussion is outclassed already. PLEASE WHY ANYBODY HERE RECOGNIZE HTH WEAPONS as the best way to get rid of them? Get Calcinite asap, they will bring you thermic lance. They rock! The heavy thermic lance are my favorite weapon. Although you'll need soldier to good time units to get close to them , what is sad somehow in early stages of the game. Does somebody knows if incediary bolts or Phosphorous clips does good effect on lobsters?
  16. Humm, I've never hearded anything regarding to those 12 SD to really finish the game though. The USG doesn't says anything about it. I think that if you have 12 synoniun devices, it means that actually 12 alien bases are in the planet, so the fact of the game not end by lack of support is a miracle!! Confirming NKF, you only finish the game by going to T'leth (even so, is not a big deal, only a long mission)..... sign
  17. Ahh, well, back to the topic issue... Targeting large USO's is a hard thing to do, but not really impossible. The strategy i use to apply is to engage three or four barracudas aginst the alien ship, all of them armed with DUP head torpedoes. Sometimes it works. If not, reload it. It might work. In the other hand, going after a large ship early in the game can bring you lots of strategic problems, for two main reasons. First, I supose you don'[t have MC capability in this stage of the game, so get prepared for great losses in the recovery mission. Second, once striking a large ship, the aliens threat raises its operations in great path, so expect harder times. My sugestion is to hit them with the DUP head torpedoes and let them land, them go to the recovery mission (probably at night). REMEMBER, this will not avoid the consequences I wrote above, so going after them is by yr own risk. Give research team time to get all tech in order to get the sonic oscillators. This is the best thing. And do not worry for the large ships, the game will not get hard on you unless you provoque it.
  18. I had voted like the majority, ship missions s u c k s! THe good thing is that taking lots of DPL with me, flating the hole ship apart is kinda fun. Seriously. And, well TJ my own proud don't let me just giving up tough missions and asking others to accomplish my missions. It's a question of honor for me. Sorry iggy, all of us was a rookie long ago. And all of us had learned a lot going through assuming great losses sometimes but to win in the future. Take some experience. Taking losses is very part of our learning process. None of us became an expert only by winning all missions, and i'm shure that doing that, tftd will be borring soon. think about that.

  21. Well, I see that some people here has actually feelings about the hardware used in the missions. My morale would never decrease, as I consider the tank as an asset. It can't take soldier's place, in my honest opinion. Whatever. Casulties in early times of the game are quite frequent. Tht's why I reload it. Seeying in advance where the aliens are, maximize the chances to take them down in the reload. Always works for me. I've finished the game using pretty much the soldiers I've acquired at the beggining of the game plus 12 others recruited along the game. Of course i've made a selection to keep the good soldiers and desmissing the bad ones.
  22. What I meant was the status of the the mission you've mentioned by sending a saved game to him to see what he was able to do to accomplish the mission.

  24. No casulties. That maximize of possibility of getting good soldiers, with good Psi strengh and accuracy, among others too. Question: when we loose the tank, shot doen by an alien, why the soldier's morale decreases?? Is there any reason?
  25. 1. AFAIK, the promotions are earned according to the oportunity in the battle filed in early times of the game. So, if one soldier gets the luck of shoot down analins that was spotted for example (lucky shot), he will probably get promoted. And so goes on. 2. Miss! 3. fighting aginst humans would be awesome though, can you imagine a world scale weapon development run to see who has the better weapons and use them against other countries?? That sounded more like Star Wars Galactic Battlegorunds anyway, but it would be nice.
