Ok I managed the music problem. I changed the Midi Synth Source.
Mainly the terror attacks on Land make the game crash. It did not crash while other missions or while doing s.th. at the geoscape. Any idea to fix it?
BTW sometimes I have to start X-Com twice (: because the first time Steam tries to start TFTD and after a short blackscreen I return to Desktop without a running process auf TFTD.

Well, still the same problem. QRes or not my LCD screen don't like the resolution of TFTD, the top of the screen is of limit of my LCD. The game launch & work but it's hard to play with only 4/5 of the screen  (:.

I noted something strange, during my tests I launched the executable directly without steam. And each time I had weird error messages by steam and/or windows. Someone confirm this is the expected behavior ?!

Check your refresh rate. LCD screens really shouldn't be set to anything other then 60hz.

UFO/X-Com original game is not on Steam, as Gametap got the rights to that one back in Feb/March.  I just hope they manage to get Apoc served up on Steam too.  That would then just leave the later games like Interceptor, which run ok in Windows, though i haven't tried mine recently.

Apocalypse is unlikely.... There are plenty of ways to get it to run on a modern system, but none of them are particulary user friendly.

I got TFTD on steam recently too but I'm getting a little peeved at the game...

-One thing is that the game fails to start after a few initial attempts (this happens sporadically) but then starts...Though it causes my laptop to bull-screen. It's old and crappy, a Dell C600 with some ATI Mobility graphics chipset...It used to play just fine until all of a sudden it ...well, didn't. In fact, Peggle Extreme blue screens too when I run it. I tried using system restore to revert the graphics drivers if that was even the problem but it didn't make a difference...oh well.

-On my desktop however, it wouldn't stop crashing when a Large sub landed in the ocean and I tried to begin the mission with my loaded Triton (just in that case)..oh well

-There isn't a way to turn off the music is there?

-I can't research the Manta. (I have seen a bunch of tech trees). I have magnetic-ion armour and the sub construction and zrbite researched, in stock and still nothing. I feel like all my time has been wasted on my current and only game file because of this...any ideas??

Otherwise, it brings back good memories...I was too young to grasp this game when I first played it and now I can!
It feels good to finally be able to armour my Aquanauts! OK... so what if I pulled the $2 000 000 000 cheat...haha

Which OS are you running the game on? XP?
Did you try Windows 95 compatibility mode?

I can't help you much about the tech tree, I suggest you look around in the TFTD subforum, there's bound to be a solution somewhere. If you don't find anything about it, try www.xcomufo.com/forums and look in the TFTD section. I know it was talked about somewhere, but it's been so long I just don't remember where.

If you double click the volume icon in your system tray, you can mute midi sound there. That should do it.

You might have to reveal it via the options => properties menu first, though.
