  1. I'm probably going to play through Silent Storm again, on the Axis side I believe this time. I plan on turning up the difficulty too. But I was wondering how do you get the enemy to use grenades a little more often. I think I remember the enemy using grenades like 2 times in the whole game. I've noticed in the config file there's a line that says, "setvar game_eq_on_grenades = 0.00" Does that have anything to do with the enemy's AI and its use of grenades? If not, is there another way to get the enemy to use them a little more? Thanks ahead for any help on this.
  2. I've been searching forums for hours to check this out. My laptop's highest resolution is 1280x800 and at that resolution, the game looks good. But it performs like crap. So I obviously have to lower it. But when that happens the text become unreadable. Seems like this has been known since day one, but nothing has been done about it. I was wondering if anyone else has figured out something or a work around...something, anything.
  3. I guess I'd call my super nation Heaven Americana, or HA! for short. Or maybe America, F--- YEAH!
  4. Yeah, I have a Cyborg that's a Gunman. I also have 4 Human Troopers, 3 Human Snipers, 1 Psionic Sniper, a Psionic Leader/Medic, and a Human Technician/Medic. I'm currently working on a Human Commando. I like snipers. They're bad ass. Oddly though all my snipers are women... Anyway, I have a question about the under barrel grenade launchers. I've fired them about 3 times. 2 indoors and 1 outside and some weirdness has happened. On the inside, all of the grenades hit the ceiling and blew up. The one I shot outside arched almost straight up and landed about half way between the shooter and his target, a Reticulan alien about 20 squares away, I guess? What's up with that? Oh, I forgot to mention rifles. I haven't really decided which I like between the HK33 and M4. They're both pretty similar. I believe the M4 has slightly better range, but more recoil (less accuracy in burst), and the HK33 has slightly less recoil and range...making it more accurate in burst mode. But I do think I like the XM8 more. It's 50 points well damage than the HK33/M4 and 100 less than the AK47, but it's practically a sniper rifle AND it fires pretty fast. As for the AK47, it's okay I guess. I usually give it to a Scout when I don't want him to have a shotgun for a specific map or mission.
  5. I was wondering what people's favorite rifles in the game are. So far I have several M4s, a couple AK47s and HK33s, and a XM8. As for sniper rifles, couple SR-25s, one MSG90, and one Barret .50 cal. I only have one M60 Echo and one Soviet PK machine gun. I really like the Barret, but it's pretty heavy, making my sniper lady close to being overloaded. And the MSG90 is pretty good too, but having only a 5 round capacity sucks. As far as assault rifles, I dunno...I managed to capture a couple M4s early on, so I've been using them alot. Now I'm able to build them and built one a each to compare. The AK47 seems okay...good damage, but accuracy sucks. HK33 seems to be a good middle ground between M4s and AKs. And the XM8...I'm not really sure about this one. Great accuracy, but the damage seems kinda low. I'm not sure how much that will hurt me later on. Just so every knows, I have 9 days until the alien ship arrives...I don't know what's going to happen and I'm a little ascared! I have all of Europe under my thumb, most of North Africa and European Russia. Also, I'm bumping into the Cultists in the Middle East right now. I plan on taking them out because the next closest Cultist territories are in China and south South America.
  6. Nah, that'll just give me the perfect excuse to form my New American Empire! I'm thinking all of Canada and Mexico and Caribbean. All of North America.
  7. lol, Canada? Two things I'm not concerned with. One is Japan. Whether they end up on my side or not, doesn't matter to me. I'm more concerned with being Germany's friend. Second is an actual war against the Allies. Take the US out of the picture, and they don't seem very strong. Especially not against Germany AND the Soviets. So I guess just getting the US on the Axis side is the hard part.
  8. Is France politically unstable in HoI2? I haven't played as any of the second tier European powers yet (just UK and Germany). Though, I have been toying with the idea of playing as the United States, but instead of being the leader of the Allies, I figure I'd try and be the leader of the Axis and help the Huns whip the Brits, French, and Soviets. How hard would that be, meaning to get the US on the Axis side that is?
  9. Was there no way to support Nationalist Spain and have them swing towards your side, and the Allies? Seems to be they'd be more useful in a big war than the rabble Republican Spain is.
  10. Heh, perfect name for the French army. SCAM.
  11. Yeah, I restarted so I could start fresh. My previous game I had most of Europe under my thumb, and the Cultist in the Ural, South Africa, and Thailand area...then I got this countdown telling me something was going to come to Earth. It had 12 days and some change left until that happened. I have no idea what it is, but it didn't sound good...and all my weapons were STILL mostly alien laser rifles and pistols. But I started getting a couple sniper rifles, and made each one of the assault rifles I could, to check out how they did in battle. Was totally not impressed with the AK-47's performance. I'm not able to judge my performance, because well...I don't have anything to judge it against. Also, I was looking at some of the mods. Like the ACM or weapon rebalancing mod. I think what's keeping me from popping one of those in is the bugs that are persistent still in the mods when I read their Read Me files. But anyway, I think I was doing well. No one had gotten killed so far, but I had one newly acquired pscionic get laid out and spend several days in the sick bay. A side note: One thing I wish I could do is have new camo for my armors. I think it's kinda stupid to be running around in battlefields in dark blue armor. What the hell is that about? But I don't know how to mod and do things like that...also, if I could I'd throw in a new weapon in the game while I was at it. The HK416...maybe make it have slightly better stats than the M4, or just replace the M4 completely with it. Maybe I'll rename a M4 that's all decked out with scopes and attachments to the HK416 when I get them and the ability to make the attachments.
  12. Hahaha...holy crap. You know what, that actually worked. It's not 100% holy shit it's fast. But it's not choppy and very slow. When I scroll from normal terrain with doodads and bits of crap to a full 2 or 3 story building it's not chugging. Thanks. I can't believe it's that simple. I had it turned off like I turned off most things because I figured it would make me run slower...guess wrong. Anyway, thanks again. Edit: I've been fooling around with other options like the shaders, anti-alasing, and textures and MAN. I was able to make the game look twice as good as it did before I turned on the SW. Got the shaders and teztures on Very High, was able to increase anti-alasing to 2, added unit shadows, and go with the true colors. Looks good. My sniper's rifle actual shines some now...
  13. Ever thought about making some camo like the US Army's new ACU pattern. http://www.tacticaltailor.com/images/swatches/acu_swatch_lg.jpg Or maybe the US Marine's MARPAT? Woodland http://www.1starmy.com/uploadimages/Product_2860_enl.jpg Desert http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__wGwMGsaIWk/SmJuwgVZ0NI/AAAAAAAABCs/uAYV3EWoDxY/s320/MARPAT_desert_pattern_swatch.jpg I dunno what it is, but I've always loved these patterns. If I knew how to make my own mod, I'd just do it myself to make the armors look like how I want. But unfortunately, I don't know the first damn thing about modding. It's a shame too, because they have the cool modern weapons like M8s and M4s, but armor that is blue? WTF is that about? Edit: lol, I'm an idiot. I didn't bother looking in the "Skins" section of the Aftershock files. There's two ACU-type camos right there! Though, to be honest...they look somewhat off.
  14. Wow...what? Are you kidding me? What was J. Edgar Hoover doing...he must be dead in your bizarro world. He wouldn't have let that happen.
  15. Hmm...what is it with Eastern European developers making awesome games, but totally half assing their engines, coding, and whatnot. Well, I had thought I read somewhere that Silent Storm uses a modified engine from Aftershock. And since my problem with Silent Storm was the shadows, I figured it was the problem with Aftershock. I suppose it's a good thing that most of the maps in Aftershock are pretty similar and that there aren't too many with lots of multistory buildings. What I find odd though is that in outdoors missions, those 2 and 3 story builds slow me down. But when I do those missions where you have to get into the base for the second half, and then kill everything on the inside...those maps don't slow me down very much and it's entirely indoors AND it's a 25+ roomed, two story structure. Any ideas on what that is?
  16. Yeah, I figured that. I already did that. No shadows, low shaders, anti-alsing is at 1, the only thing that's above the minimum is texture resolution. Which is either at medium or high, I can't remember. Lowering it doesn't improve anything and makes the characters look like shit... So I keep it up some. One thing I was wonder is the screen resolution. It's at 1024x768 and that's the only option (why have an option for screen resolution in the Options Menu if you can't change to a different one is beyond me). So, I think I already know the answer, but I gotta ask anyway...any way to change the resolution? I notice that when playing games that have some 3D that lowering the resolution helps out performance. As side note...kinda weird with Afterlight, having a lower resolution than the highest (which is 1200x800) makes all of the text blurry and hard to read...but the game seems to run fine at that resolution after I turned down or off stuff like dynamic lighting, shaders, and crap like that.
  17. LOL, gotta love some Sean Connery as Captain Marko Ramius from The Hunt for the Red October. But remember...Ramius defected, with an entire Soviet sub...might want to increase your political officers on your subs just in case some of your mighty Japanese submariners decide that yes, they would like some fries with that and land in LA to get a paint job for their sub by some Mexican garage monkey.
  18. Wow, 30 carriers? That's one big, giant, male sexual organ to be swinging around.
  19. I appreciate the commands. I went through them and they didn't seem to really increase my speed any. The ones in the list didn't seem to do anything. I dunno if I entered them wrong, or what. But I did find something helpful out. It's not the shadows or lighting. Because when I did the first command, the "effect_off lightmap" it basically turns everything like it was completely daylight everywhere on the map (BTW, the map I was testing this all on was a nighttime map that had tank hangers and a 2 story "barracks" on the other side of the map). Because even after I turned off the lightmap, when I would pass near or over the barracks on that map, that's when it would slow down a lot. Anywhere else and it was smooth. Also, changing the shown elevation on the map reduced the lag because all that was shown was the first floor of the building, which had like 15 rooms I suppose. So it seems it's the 3D...but I meet the requirements. Here's some of my diag: (BTW, it doesn't say it, but my 3D card is a 128MB one). ------------------ System Information ------------------ Operating System: Windows Vista
  20. Like the title says. I recent got UFO Aftershock and I've been REALLY wanting to play it because I need my X-COm fix right now. Installed and patched it to 1.2 all find. Fired it up and it worker great after tweaking some of the visual options. Now, I've done the little tutorial running around mission inside the Laputa. Now I'm on the tutorial mission on Earth in Central Europe, the villagers want me to take out some mutants for them. This is where things go wrong. When I'm not near either of the two larger buildings, the game runs fine. I can scroll just find. But when I go near the buildings it slows down real bad. I'm sure I know what it is. Because this stuff happened with my Silent Storm game. When I played with SS's config file and turned off the shadows for EVERYTHING (people, buildings, and crap like trees) the game worked perfectly. I'm assuming the same thing is happening right now with UFO:AS. I've looked everywhere, I'm currently looking at the option.txt file...there's nothing I can play with in there to turn them off. Maybe in the console command? But I don't know the commands for it, I have the console working, just no command to turn things off. Please, I'm begging can someone help me out here. I've been Google-ing and checking the official forums for a couple hours now and I haven't found anything so far. Edit: BTW, I figured out that typing a "?" in the console brings up a list of commands. Been playing with them and the only one that kinda works is the "all_effects_off" but that makes it look like crap. There's a command called "effect_off" (there's an "on" one too) but how do I make it turn the building and tree shadows off too?
  21. Hah, I liked to name my soldiers and give them back stories too. Most recently my squad's leader is O Jenkins (Ovaltine Jenkins) and he's the foul mouthed Marine with a heart of gold. His XO is Jazz Hands...he likes jazz. BTW, I've named them after Shawn and Gus's aliases from the TV Psysch, in case anyone was wondering.
  22. You would figure Arulco would have so many AKs that you'd have to wade through them.
