Keep me posted, would you?

Hello everybody! Resently I've got the urge to walkthrough the Silent Storm in a different way, well, for me, at least - scout, solo. Knowing that panzerkleiners will pose a problem, I've decided to try a "medieval" approach to it, by means of the mechanical sabre. And what do you know - it isn't working! Neither on panzerkleiners, nor on your average human goon - I simply cannot target the enemies with it, getting only the forbidding cross displayed... So the questions are: has anyone actually got the sabre going, and if not, then how do I defeat the panzers (and most importantly, Hel)? Is it accomplished only by use of laser guns (told you I want to try something different)? Thanks in advance for answers.
