  1. Will ammo problems plague me forever? I'm running desperately short of ammo, and there's none for sale. I'm rationing it by giving people a wider range of weapons, hiding around corners and only shooting at point-blank range and using aimed fire as much as possible. I'm still running out. And this is only the first week. Do the suppliers ramp up the goods soon? Can I research ammo-free weapons? Is there a trick (such as unloading weapons before the end of the battle) that further reduces my use? I considered raiding the cult ... but raiding would itself use ammo... If it gets much worse, all troops will be primarily (only?) armed with stun grapples. Yikes!
  2. That sounds like good advice. I checked them yesterday, and they ranged between 1% and 3%. I -assume- (correct me if I'm wrong) that I don't need to care about such. I'd expected to ignore that until it reached something closer to 20% ... But rather than assuming ... what % infiltration is worth reacting to?
  3. Ah. This probably explains why I'm back at the Senate, barely a day (if that) after beating off an alert there. Perhaps I should return soon after finishing this battle, and check it out again. (And the neighbours, too, from the sounds of it...)
  4. Hi, Roger Wong's guide recommends investigating potential infestations early. If I wait for a siren, apparently "the aliens will have already established themselves." What does this mean - that there'll be more aliens at a site if I go in later? (That alone doesn't seem a reason to go earlier/later... ) Any thoughts? Dal.
  5. In X-Com1, there'd be missions to capture a certain unit (primarily psi-capable critters). In this, I'd run in, stun the target, grab it, and often run back to the transport and bail - complete with body. In Apoc, I can't see how to do this. Yes, I can stun a critter with a stun grapple. When I do, though, the body doesn't seem to be on the ground to grab. Do I have to neutralise every alien in a map in order to capture one?
  6. Hiya, I've read on here that it's best in Apoc to set up a defensive line, and let aliens come to you. I'm just getting started in Apoc, and am consequently struggling with this advice. Last night, I set up such in a battle at someone's corp headquarters. The aliens appeared to lack any homing instinct at all. I ended giving up, and ransacked every square of the map. (The last two aliens were hiding in the filing room.) The poppers I've seen in a couple of battles - never moved. The Spitters walked back and forth on the same squares. Multi-worms - well, these were the critters who spent a real-life hour hiding in a filing room ... Am I doing something wrong by playing TB? Would this all go away in RT combat? Admittedly, of last night's longer battle, probably 30 minutes of it was watching moronic civilians running around. Do I lose points for stunning them? If they can't move, maybe I'll save all that time... (I was reaching the point of butt-striking one with an autocannon last night...) Dal.
  7. I've avoided that spot on the grounds that the Aliens would be smart enough to simply toss a grenade (etc) down there every other round or so. Am I crediting them overly talented tactical skills?
  8. That's probably a more accurate interpretation than the one I took. Mind you, I don't get how that fits in the original context (how knowledge of the code behind the maps makes the game too easy). Taking your (probably correct) interpretation - any thoughts on what that tile may be? I struggle to see it as being any of the ones lined by the orange wall tiles, somehow.
  9. Please don't hit yourself. I've just taken out 2 landed battleships and a landed harvester with my semi-skilled soldiers. No losses, no wounds. Barely any risky moves. Before I found this forum, I'd have taken at least one wound per battle, and probably fallen back on save-load magic another time (min). Sending me *twitch* insane with misleading advice is only a minor blemish by comparison. (My partner & work colleagues probably won't even notice the difference. *twitch*)
  10. Unfortunately, I'm seeking details, rather than having them. I found the post again, though. It's old. Here: http://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=533 About half way down the thread. Rexx refers to it in his second post, and NFK & Hobbes follow up ...
  11. Hi, I was reading a posting on here by someone who referred to an orange tile in a battleship - one which creates an instant win condition. I became curious to try it out. My next landing, coincidentally, was a sectoid battleship! So I sent a squad of psi-defensive soldiers. They were lucky enough to land next to the battleship (which fortunately had left its air-to-air weaponry at home from this mission, to save fuel). One brick of HE and the troops are swarming up the 'leg', murdering any unfortunate who came to see what the knocking was. I madly raced to find this orange tile on the floor somewhere ... ... and accidentally killed all the aliens before I'd explored all of the craft. *sigh* While -do- I like the $3,000K of scavenging, I -don't- like the unsatisfied curiousity. Is there such a tile? If so, does it work? Where is it? Is it actually a floor tile? (Or is it one of that swathe of orange wall tiles, that I forgot about until the mission ended?) As this battle shows, knowing the tile wouldn't have made much impact - I won the mission before exploring the entire craft to find it. However, I -am- curious about the tile. Can anyone help? Dalerian. P.S. I seem to have caught verbosity from one of the Gurus on here. Is it fatal?
  12. Thanks for the welcome. It's good to see that I'm not the only person left playing this game. Mind you, I feel like such a novice by comparison ... all these things that I'd never known I could do! (Explosives through the edge of a ufo, or a ceiling, for example...) I'm back in a brand new game, and still awaiting my first chance to capture some Psi... *mutters while "patiently" awaiting a sizeable sectoid craft*
  13. Hi All, I've been playing X-Com intermittently since my first 386, and recently started playing again. (This has to be one of the best games I've ever played.) I've only recently found this forum & wiki, and have learnt plenty so far. (Thanks to all who've posted advice and tactics in here.) One thing I've not seen - what triggers when a given race arrives? I'll be honest - I like fighting Floaters/Reapers early on. They're (relatively) dumb & weak - which makes them lucrative to deal with. This is great, given how tight money can be at the start. Yet - pretty soon, we get The Green Sheep* & their masters arriving, who are far less easy to deal with. What triggers the change in races? Is it purely the calendar, or do other things influence it? A few potential variables might be score / # of bases / bank balance / # of kills on sectoids/floaters... If I knew that I could delay the Muton/Ethereals (etc) for another couple of game months by some slight change in play-style, I'd seriously consider it... Does anyone know the answer to this? Dal. * The sheep reference... Muton is french for sheep; thinking of them as such tickles me. It also fits in with the concept of "these unfortunates" being bred for task...
