  1. Boondock Saints. My turn: "Will nict, muss! Will nicht, muss! WILL NICHT! MUSS" Hint: Ancient German movie, one of the greatest classics ever made. Has a short name.
  2. Ack. Found a place in US willing to ship to Europe - for an extra 30 bucks. Ripoffs....
  3. I voted 5 in this poll. I now played it with the patch, uninstalled in a fit of rage and now give it 3/10.
  4. I rate it 3/10. I have now tried the patch, found that the game was the same bullcrap it was before. Issues below. - LOADING TIMES! For a game with graphics that are only so-so, this game lags and has FAR too long loading times. This becomes unbearable, I remember walking my squad into an ambush and getting everybody killed. This made me ram my forehead into the keyboard. Not because of frustration at my own stupidity, but because I would now have to sit staring at the goddamn loading screen ONCE AGAIN for the stupid mission. The loading times wouldn't be good if they had nude photos of Shakira as loading screen backgrounds! - THE PATCH DID NOT FIX THE GODDAMN KEYBOARD CAMERA CONTROLS! I haven't got a wheelmouse, making it impossible for me to zoom in or out. It's still impossible, the game company didn't FIX THIS! X AND Z BUTTONS DO NOT DO ANYTHING DESPITE BEING MAPPABLE! As a result, I have to spend the game zoomed so close to my men I can count their split ends, making strategy impossible. - Much less open ended than UFO 1. You only have one starting location in Europe and not 3 as in UFO 1, your violently irritating advisors interrupt your gameplay all the time with more-or-less irrelevant information and the game feels much more linear than before. - The diplomacy system can go to hell, as can the resource system. AS tries to be Enemy Unknown and fails. Pathetically. X-Com had a good setting, keeping good relations with the world's nations was interesting and rewarding. Keeping good relation with one of the three (3!) factions is boring and was for me mainly a question of doing a mission in their country every once in a while and sending them my excess materials. As for the resources, it just isn't engrossing. And the entire "build railway" thing - This isn't Imperialism. Imperialism was a GOOD game that revolved around building up your infrastructure - AS is a tactical squad game that has railway building slapped on like a turd on a pizza. - Stupid setting, bad colours and irritating voice acting. This game was a total disappointment to me. UFO 1 was excellent, this is bull. I hope there'll be no more sequels and that the series die here. Now I can only hope that Hammer and Sickle will save the squad based genre of games...
  5. What an awful review. See what he wrote under "Sound." This is supposed to be an action game indeed... And again the reviewer is disappointed that it isn't more Falloutish when it's billed as an RPG. Why do they get Soccer game afficionados to write reviews for games like SS?
  6. Bah. Damn yanks won't ship to Europe. Guess I'll have to wait for European release.
  7. I think I'll order it from American Amazon today. Too bad I can't get it within Europe.
  8. I actually see a problem with this: If you overshoot and make the new weapons TOO lethal, it will be too easy for a lone gunman to take down an entire patrol using single shot fire in one turn. Play the HS demo - Moshe is able to do that using his Uzi with headshots. This isn't realistic.
  9. I think he's right about one thing: HS shouldn't have been marketed as an RPG game. The SS series are tactical shooters with RPG ELEMENTS, not real RPGs. I don't like that review - reviewer seemed to be expecting Fallout, not Jagged Alliance, and was severely disappointed.
  10. Anybody tried KOing the commanding officer in the little house and stealing his uniform?
  11. More historical revisionism! I just finished the demo (prison break mission) and I have to say that it rocked ass! I realize that there is quite likely a stealth approach to that mission, possible involving KOing the british officer and stealing his uniform, but I got frustrated with the wandering patrol opening fire as soon as they saw Sanders. What? What's suspicious about a woman walking down the street in civilian clothes with a submachinegun strapped to her back? Took me a while to figure that one out.... Well, I hid Sanders under the window of the officers house and placed Igor and Moshe in disguise at the prison gates, Igor carrying his SMG in plain view but wearing a US soldier uniform and Moshe having his Uzi in his pocket. I then waited for the patrol to walk by, made like RoboCop and took down the entire patrol and door guard in one turn and despatching the tower guards in the next two turns. I then sent Moshe through the side door with Igor about to follow him, but was surprised by a five man patrol coming onto the stage. No problem, Sanders was on location, hiding behind the poster column, SMG at the ready, and Igor was sent to assist her. The patrol was soon taken to pieces, Autofire being severely effective in this game! Meanwhile, Fidel led the uprising in the prison, making short work of the upstairs guards and stealing their guns. However, just as the last patrolman was downed, a new patrol appeared at the end of the street. Igor and Sanders engaged them in a heated firefight with Sanders making good use of a rifle she stole of the fresh corpse of a patrolman. The odds were against them though, so I sent Moshe (Whom I have now named Moshe Payne for his insane killing spree through the lower level of the prison) through the back door of the prison, catching the patrol in the back and dismantling them for good. Then it was just a case of waltzing into the bossmans office and blowing his brains out. Note: Fidel has a lock pick that you can use on the safe for some extra goodies. Impressions over previous SS games: Weapon accuracy and damage are now much more realistic. I like being able to take down opponents at anything but point-blank range with SMG bursts and I also like that people now actually DIE when being shot in the face with a high-powered rifle. Overall, I have great expectations for this game.
  12. Wikipedia says it was designed in 1948 and set into mass production in '51. Where Moshe has picked up a Uzi prototype is anyone's guess. But hey, if the world of SS has laser cannons and wanzers, what harm does a weapon from four years in the future do?
  13. Cool. Thanks. I hope the AK is available earlier this time - by the time I got it in Sentinels, I had far better rifles for general purpose fighting. I am pumped for this release!
  14. I like it. I also don't mind the dialogue and backstory, Moshe is especially a pretty interesting character (If you try re-entering the town after leaving it, he'll tell you how he keeps the names of 8000 executed jews in his head. He also kicks ass with his uzi, which I am glad made it into the game. Hope to find the AK47 in the real game. The firefights are awesome and the new soundtrack fits it pretty well. Only thing I don't like is the way the prisoners rebel and get their stupid asses killed in the Prison Break mission as well as the way reinforcements come running and ambush my men.

    S3 tips

*Minor Spoilers* -Melee and throwing weapons are NOT useless. I always begin a mission by sneaking through the level with my scout, taking down any lone hostiles with throws and blades. I managed to kill 9/10 of the enemy forces in the first multi-choice mission (The one involving breaking into a bunker) -In order to kill panzerkleins, the best way is to get into a panzerklein yourself with one of the sniper cannons and aim for the eyes. Failing that, armour piercing rockets/grenades and regular rifle shots to the eyes work too. -Find the bank. Rob it. Hire top-level mercs. -In missions where you know there'll be more enemies coming onto the map, I have found it prudent to mine their entry points heavily as well as post grenade-throwers in good firing positions to ambush them. Cheap, but it allowed me to get through the "desert ruins" mission practically unscathed. It's cheap though. -Bring a couple of high-explosives onto the final map. You'll need them for the final fight. -Wooden partitions can be BLOWN THE HELL DOWN to find goodies hidden behind. Same goes for doors and walls. Who needs lockpicks anyway? -Ninjas suck. Shade can be safely overlooked unless you want a throwing, sneaking, backstabbing dude, something a regular scout can also do as well as hold his own in firefights. -It really helps having somebody of the MEDIC profession on your team. In my opinion, Engineers can be overlooked, as their skill tree is less than impressive, apart from their heavy-weapons skill, although having somebody with a high engineering skill really helps in many cases. -USE the scoped rifles and their sniper function. Good for picking away at enemies too stupid to hide in the distance. -The laser cannon is pretty worthless since its ammo is expensive as hell, but it can be used to good effect on panzerkleins and in the final fight. -Remember: You can shoot through walls with powerful guns.

    did you know

Lots of nasty weapons used in ye olde days. In ship to ship combat, sealed jars full of angry bees or killer snakes were hurled at enemy ships as terror weapons, in sieges bloated corpses were catapulted over city walls in order to cause plauge and general unhealth and that's not even MENTIONING Greek Fire, an ancient Byzanthian flamethrower. Yes sirree, lotsa fun to be had at an ancient battlefield. I read a National Geographic article on evil weapon use once. Most enlightening.
  17. We'll see. Gamespy has been wrong on numerous occasions before, I'm getting the game to see for myself.
  18. I beg to differ. My version of Silent Storm loads much quicker than AS, has better graphics and smoother gameplay and doesn't lag like hell as soon as there are several combatants on the same screen. The controls of Aftershock STILL suck just as badly as in Aftermath, the developers having done nothing to fix the micromanagement of each and every troopers LOF to get anything out of them in firefights. The setting is much, much less interesting, the devastated cities are gone and replaced with all-too bright colour schemes, the diplomacy system turned out to be a disaster as did the logistics. I also disliked the introduction of the space pod, a throwback to X-Com and a bad one at that, as well as the fact that you started out with laser rifles. Just strikes me the wrong way, not having to research for laser weapons. My conclusion: Aftershock is not a very good squad-based game. Aftermath beats it by far, although mainly because of better loading times and better setting.
  19. Hello. Can anyone please direct me to any guides on how to properly use PSI in this game? I always HATED the Psi aspect of X-Com. To me, it is not entertaining to have my heavy weapons dude get possessed and start lobbing rockets at his friends without the psionic alien even being on-screen. How do you play the game properly with these damn psiers around?
  20. They're from Silent Storm, right? New ones, same game: "Ah'm there! Ah ate EEEVERY bug on the way. Thar were MANY" "I don't know why everybody says I'm PSYCHOTIC! I ain't psychotic, I just got a passion for m' job, that's all." "You do not speak Russian. Ah, I miss days when Russia was at war with everybody." "Ah'm beginnin' ta think that this whole freakin' mess is just a whole freakin....mess. Damn, I ain't good with words" "Finally! With any luck there'll be a couple of MALES to shoot" "Let's just fire wildly 'till they come outta their hiding spot"
  21. Too bad for them. I've already filed the game in my "unplayable" folder due to loading times, weak graphics, bad interface and the bug that kept me from being able to zoom in or out. I might revisit it at a later time though. For now, I'm playing Europa 1400.
  22. Nope, a much cornier game than that. Hint: From the mid-nineties.
  23. Seeing as the Movie Quote thing is so popular, I thought I'd add to the overall nerdiness of the forum by starting a similar thread for video game quotes. I'll go first, with an easy one: "WHOOOO wants some WANG?"
  24. Curse of the Were-Rabbit? (I loved that movie.) Nice avatar by the way. Kitchener is the proto-Uncle Sam.
