  4. thanks BB very much appreciate the time you have taken to explain this - helps a lot i am going to try and get this set up on my windows box - have an XCOM itch that needs scratching so far have UFOextender working - now gonna try it with XCOMUTIL i see from your comments that with the 9.7beta-442 build it UTIL works with extender - does this mean that it won't offer you any options that would be incompatible? On a slightly separate note one of the things i really liked from the Icing Mod was making PSI control harder but psi panic easier (i assume for the aliens as well) - i always thought the original psi combat was a bit overpowered. Is there any way to change these values as i don't want to install the complete Icing mod once again, many thanks for your help doc PS - i haven't given up on getting this going on Linux - i see that Extender needs Visual C++ loaded so will give that a go and see if i can then run the CE version under wine (rather than use dosbox)
  5. just realised that UFO extender only works with CE edition and i am running the dos version via DOSBOX whats the CE edition and how do you start the CE edition in windows? also, is it just the launcers that are different? e.g. would i have to run xcomUtil in a CE directory? thanks for all the help doc
  6. Thanks BB Correct. For me it doesn't even seem to load anything - usually with wine something loads at least to a crash screen. However in the wine environment you can (and very often need to) pre-load software that windows would already have e.g. fonts, dot.net, VB etc. It may just be that whatever program compiled the .exe needs to be loaded into wine first. Does running UFOextender.exe install stuff (and xcom is then started by another program?) Or does it just start the mod? XcomUtil setup.exe installed in Dosbox. XcomUtil runs fine - using the runxcom.bat file - however it never mentions anything about UFO extender which perhaps leads me to believe that the UFOextender.exe installs stuff that XcomUtil picks up?? Doesn't look like anything i can do here - though may post on the UFOextender page and see if the program writer has any suggestions. (and may also try the Steam forums) Thanks for that - i have just set up WIN8 preview build in virtualbox so may try that as well - though not sure how video drivers work (if at all) in VMs.
  7. Hi all I have a linux install + Steam version of this game. I can run in Dosbox OK and also use XcomUtility. However i want to try UFOextender as it looks a really good mod however you can't fun it in DOS mode. Also it doesn't run in wine either. Does anyone have any idea what extra dll or progs need to be loaded into wine to get it too work (assuming its even possible). If i do ever get it working i gather the latest version of xcomutility works with UFOextender? i.e just run the utility and then start the game through UFOextender to get the benefits of both? Is this how it works? thanks doc

  9. civ 5 - a storm of critisism over that (was that Firaxis?) this new xcom - or at least the specualtion on some of the things we have seen so far JA:Back in Action - where do i start!!! the good thing is there does seem to be a a lot of indie companies developing what look like good games
  10. when you look at some older games and what they allowed you to do (e.g. Xcom and JA2) the new versions seem to leave out a lot of the good stuff - game design these days seems to be focused on dumbing down at the moment it still looks like Xenonauts is the better option
  11. not impressed with the 3 man squad size - i hope this isn't a fixed limit also the mission size was really small - hope thios is just an example and not the standard map size
  12. Hi I have win7:64 so its good to see these xcom still works A few questions though relating to the STEAM versions : 1) Does UFO/TFTD/APOC all work ok? 2) Are they all patched to latest version? 3) Does xcomutil work for them in steam 4) can you apply mods to the steam versions? thanks doc
  13. Thanks Dog Soldier I haven't got that yet so hopefully all is OK. Getting back on topic - I have one main squad of 7: 2 Sniper 2 Gunmen 1 Leader 1 Medic Plus about a dozen others, only 2 PSI and 2 Cyborg though - as i haven't been able to research their stuff yet though Doc

    Bug report

    I keep getting crashes if i try and put my Heavy drone in the squad. As i drag him over it crashes. Doc
  16. I think i read somewhere that Sea Lane (Tracks) cost a lot less to upkeep than the land ones - can anyone confirm if this is true? Talking of strategy - whats best for XP gains. How XP is allocated seems to be a bit of a mystery and very unbalanced, very simple and very hard missions have very similar XP gains. I also read somewhere that if you send say only one guy he only gets the same XP as a group. If this is true then maybe the upgrade to your landing pod research is a good investment as you can have 7 guys getting XP gains instead of 5. Again i have no ide if this is true - can anyone clarify this? thanks Doc
  17. Not sure if this is a bug but it says i do not have a .5 cal weapon when i look under researching AP ammo. Now i have already manufactured a .50 cal Sniper rifle and can make .5 cal ammo so why can't i research AP Ammo. I don't have medious armour researched but that only speeds things up and is not a must. Is there another .50 cal gun i need to get, and if so what and who has them? Thanks Doc
  18. i now see that minerals are collected without tracks but i am sure that they didn't start appearing until i built my second base can minerals only be collected if they are next to a base? (i haven't got very far in the game yet) Doc
  19. thanks for the advice guys ricardo - are you sure you don't need track to collect resources? The manual implies you do? (Haven't had time to check this my self yet)
  20. thanks for that - if i ever manage to build more than about 1 track i'll try your advice and shut non essential ones down i haven't played it too much yet but was coming around toyour way of thinking about base facilities - have started to build multiple of same type to speed up initial manufacture of armour and research but will probably demolish some to make way for other stuff like an ordnamnce factory as time goes on - because of the trouble i am having with tracks not building i have't yet managed to connect a second base yet any idea how long a track is supposed to take to build? thanks Doc
  21. Am playing on hard and the track upkeep (the few that i can build - see my other post) seem very high compared to what you get from each province. As mentioned i can't always seem to build tracks so that doesn't help. Any tips - what do you guys do to get resources? Thanks Doc
  22. I can seem to build the odd track but i then get this yellow lines that never turn into the thick ones that work? Now i have astockpile of resources but usually 2 of them will have a negative income - BUT with a stockpile i don't see why this should have an effect. So whats up: 1) me doing something wrong? (quite likely) 2) bug? Does anyone know how long a track is supposed to take to build and if there are any pre requisites for them to complete. Thanks Doc
  23. thanks for that - i did another sweep and eventually found a skelatoid - he was in a place that was invisible unless you just happened to stand in a specific place - even though the room itself looked clear thanks again Doc
