That was pretty 'smart' - declare war then suddenly warships take over a system :P Remindes me of an old AI strategy in Civ 3 and 4. If AI dosen't like you but is in peace, if he is gathering large forces at the borders this means he will attack.

 

I am wondering what the devs were smoking when thinking about the alien races. From logical point of view most of the species in this game couldn't be inteligent enough for space travelr. Come on - inteligent gasses and they need ships ?

They also like to stop just outside of the range of my defenses and fire with the first weapons that are available. The range of the two weapons is almost exactly the same. So close that a human player can't use them in that manner and will take fire from the orbital defenses. After the next update there should be something to fix that little problem with range, however.. :P

Well, that's about 4 hours of gameplay condensed down into about 60 screenshots. I pretty much took out everything but the major battles, conquests, and tech increases. Occasionally, I would show what was happening on the handful of industrial worlds, but it's starting to more and more involved so details are dropped more often than not. Next installment, I hope to get Plasmatrons on every ship I have and also find that last Frutmaka colony so we can drive them to extinction. The Nanotwirler was rather unexpected and would finally make they advanced shielding from the very beginning of the game practical. I had just researched the tech that allowed for a 1.5 unit generator, and BAM, there's the 2.5 unit Nanotwirler :P

:P Huge work. I forgot so much about this game! The lines between systems - all races have the same network, right?

 

Is there a way to assign a governor to a planet?

Yes, the map is the same for all races. And as far as having planets work on their own. There is a later game tech that allows it, but you generally get poorly built planets from it. The AI tends to just place buildings on the planet at random without paying attention to the square colors giving boosts to different buildings and the like.

Firstly, every planet gets a Lush Growth Bomb. This will give each planet 10 extra spaces for free, meaning that we can tear down those old outposts that are on just about every planet finally!

This is a very useful tech. It allows us to use one piece of equipment to send every ship in a star lane to the end. It takes a full turn, so it's not as fast as the Lane Magnetron, but it is much more efficient if you want to send a whole fleet through.

Another tech is also discovered this turn. It allows the impressive Uberlaser, a weapon that's 1.5x as powerful as the Plasmatron AND it fires TWICE per turn. Making it 3x as powerful, but at the cost a considerable range. This is a good weapon if the game lasts long enough to make effective use of it. The Plasmatron will still be used for bombarding planets due to its range.

By turn 1014 a huge horde of free tech allows the best weapon to be researched. This weapon is awesome. About 10x the total damage per gun as the Plasmatron because it fires a whopping 3 times!

We get another free tech on turn 1023, and boy is it a nice one. It allows use to repair vessels in the field. Team it up with the Sacrificial Orb, Plasma Coupler and a lot of power generators and you have a beast of a ship that can transfer power and armor to friendly vessels. Just be sure that you repair the vessel that's sending armor or you'll lose the ship.

Looks like that last system was just enough to push us over the edge into a win. There are a few different ways to win. 2/3 Occupation, Occupying all Homeworlds, Killing everything that isn't you, or if you want a real challenge Ally Everyone. I'm not sure the last one is even possible with the antagonizer patch. The AI is just too aggressive toward the player. I've only got an allied win when I played without the patch and as the Baliflids.

Ok, I cheated and took every planet on the map that was remaining, my score only went to 47%

 

Then I started a new game as the Balifids and apparently I can't get anyone to ally me, but that might just be the antag patch. I might try without it later.
