Formally being in the army myself, i've always wondered X-com does not have an option for a prone position, ie lying on the chest propped on the elbows.  To me thats the most accurate firing position.

It would be cool for such a pose for those using sniper tactics.  I would love for such a function in the new remakes to improve accuracy but give up TUs in getting up.

It would have surely rocked. :P
But it would risk being overpowered if the aliens could not do it also. A prone trooper on a roof top would be really hard to hit with direct fire. If the aliens could just lay out in one of those wheat fields and snipe you from out of sight, it would really add depth to the tactical part of the game.  :(

If I remember correctly, you can use the prone position in Apocalypse.  In fact you can crawl in Apocalypse!  I just thought that was the coolest thing ever!

Indeed, the extra position was added to X-Com 3. Worked rather well, but you did have to wait a while to get up/down/move around.
