Hey all.

Whenever I try to start up eiter editor, it gives me the following error.

 

Cannot open "MSSQLSERVER" service:

The specified device does not exist as an installed device.

 

I've installed the MSDE thing from the disk, ran the setup in "Bin\MSDE". It still gives me the same error. The installer says "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine" at the top, and above the install bar says "Gathering the required information". When that reaches the end, it starts over and says "Time remaining: # seconds". When that bar reaches the end, it changes time remaining to 0, but the install bar quickly moves from right to left. I'm not sure if the installation is screwed up and it just isn't giving me an error.

I've also tried Microsoft SQL Server 2005, which gave me the same error when I ran the editors.

 

I'm using Windows XP pro and have the Gold Edition (S2 and S3), I assume it's the US version (bought it off of Amazon).

 

Any help would be appreciated.

Well there can be a problem with the install shield software, if the MSDE uses it?
