  1. I havent really been excited over a new strategy game. I dont mind the new Xcom but I love the old one. I also used to play Earth 2150 and Dune.

But in the last few weeks Ive gotten all excited over EA doing Star Wars games and a little unknown game Artifact Red X. Im excited because it looks like it might fill that strategy hole ive had for a while and when the disappointment of EA's SW titles washes over im hoping this little gem does the trick!! Its up on KS - i put the link in there in 'kicksomething' thread https://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/topic/9635-kickstart-something/page__st__240?do=findComment&comment=124485

the SW news is all over the web so im not linking it here.

So what im saying is, what game, maybe its a small indie game or a blockbuster really gets you going? and why??

  2. BEST... is a very subjective term. For starters you can check our reviews (look under "articles" section) to see what the authors thought about those games, but that doesn't even scratch the surface. Even in space strategy, my special love, I'm unsure what to recommend THE MOST. A lot of these games are plain great and picking a definite winner just won't happen. The ones reviewed here at SC are all more than worth trying, but games like Distant Worlds look like a must just as well.

Then there's Fallen Enchantress, which looks like a great TB game in a fantasy setting etc. Gah, sorry not to have been of any use with finding the best game there is.

    BTW, welcome to StrategyCore!

Distant Worlds.. i'll check it out. Thanks for the welcome!

If you don't mind playing some old games, try Jagged Alliance games or for example Silent Storm - but for SS you'd better buy GoG version as SS has problems with new computers or if you have less then 4GB of ram you should do fine with any version.

It all depends on what you like in strategy games. You also might want to play Company of Heroes or Warhammer 40k Dawn of War. I don't suggest playing DoW 2 - at least the main release since you will get bored to tears with it's campaign - don't know about the expansions.

You can also go with classic Panzer General series and I think there were some new revisions of this game or quite similar to it.

    yeah it was terrible.

CnC & Red Alert & to some extent Total Anniliation were all gems. (Startcraft is fantasitc but I get tired of it ;-(

  3. Awesome responses guys! Ive got some researching to do. Yeah I saw https://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/topic/10447-invaders-mark-the-spot/#entry124076

and I found this pic im using for my avatar from https://www.tier2games.com/

there is also a sick comic page - but they need to add some stuff to it.

the new x-com is ok but it negates the reason I loved x-com in the first place. I like having more than 5 squadies and I dont like beign told I have to do everything in 2 moves per turn - that's retarded!

Also the mini-cutscenes all the time are annoying and the maps are not random - keep getting the same areas over and over.

  4. I wrote a back story inspired by X-Com and I thought I'd share it here. Its rough and im intersested in seeing what you guys think and if you have suggestions/comments

Humans & aliens grouped into two factions locked in a millennia-long war which began when a group of explorers discovered a artifact in the center of the galaxy. When touched by an ungloved hand, the artifact released an energy wave which rippled throughout the galaxy. The energy wave had a strange effect on all organic life causing the cells in the vertebrae to mutate in what scientists are calling "Freeform Evolution". This mutation transforms the individual's physiology based on emotion, self thought and environmental interaction - including their moral choices and social interactions. The mutation somehow absorbs this and uses the brain's self projection to physically modify the molecular & cell structure of the subject.

In addition to aesthetic changes, whom the individual interacts with can also influence these physical changes. As an example, by associating with unsavory individuals, the group of individuals all appear to produce particular pheromones in a way to identify with one another. This indicated that "Freeform Evolution" is somehow interconnected with every organic molecule. These changes have changed the social dynamics of all the species in the galaxy except one - the elder race, who are known as the oldest species in the galaxy. They can take solid form but have not be affected by the artifact since they have evolved into higher forms of life - light energy. cannot interfere on this plane of existence.

Originally the protectors of the artifacts but this was forgotten over many millions of yearsThe humans are invading the Elder's abandoned planets in hopes of recovering several more artifacts which are told of in legends. Those who control all the artifacts can not only shape their own physiology and extend their mortality but also shape the universe. In response to the Human threat, other races have banded together to fight the Humans (and their allies) to destroy Humanity.

So Humans are the "bad guys" bent on taking over the known universe. Your species are the extraterrestrials, your mission is to do whatever it takes to conquer a specific planet (expansions could be extra planets, systems etc). Terrorize local populations, abductions as well as infiltrate the natives to achieve your goals. Unfortunately you're not alone and other alien factions have joined in to stake their claims or protect the locals from destruction. Scout for base locations, build your bases, resource mines, supply depots and more all in the aide of achieving victory for the species. Players must establish ongoing resource gathering, diplomacy, research, manufacturing and more.
