  1. About the UI, one of the moderators in the 2K forums confirmed to me that it will indeed be based off of the DA:O UI, in the sense that both the PC and consoles will have the same UI graphic-wise, but the PC one will have added functionalities.

So no "Press Y to do this" or "LB/RB to do that" on PC version.

    And an updated screenshot:

Hahha no not really.. but i'm surprised nobody called for that hairstyle yet.

LMFAO - that picture made me chortle! :)

  2. @Tycow

Hi, I am one of the devs, thanks so much for the nice write up. SPAZ has had almost no press, so any word of mouth really helps. I saw The Veteran was having a tech issue, so I decided to pop in.

Hey Blorfy! No problems... just glad to have generated a bit of extra money for you guys. :P

  3. Sadly it's not going to be possibel for me to stick with it under the current circumstances but I agree it deserves a better chance than I've been able to give it. It certainly takes my computer more than 3 minutes to do that first bit of loading and even the second shorter load took closer to 2 minutes than 1!

As an example at just how long the first load has been taking, I managed to tidy the whole downstairs of my house the last time I tried it. That includes picking up 2 trainsets, lego, magnetic letters, sponge letters, a bike, a car, crayons, shoes, books and who only knows what else. Not my mess you understadn :P

So yes loading is a BIG problem for me but the bigger issue is the ingame lag. Everything stutters from the mouse to the menu! When flying in a straight line it's just about bearable but when trying to alter direction or use any of the interface it's just impossible. Honestly I haven't played into GTAIV EFLC because of the memory leak it has on the pc but it still runs better than this!!!

Embarassingly I can't tell you my exact specs but I know they're pretty good as I've been able to max out every game I've ever bought on this computer and that includes the newest generation of recent releases. I have at least a dual core 2GHz+ processor a 1GB GPU that's only about a year old (from release) and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. I want to upgrade my CPU, mobo and RAM as the newer games are starting to tax it a bit but the fact is they still run fine! So how can that setup being giving me such issues???

Wow, that is a shame mate. I wouldn't like to point the finger at your computer, but if my lil lappytop can run it as smooth as butter (see the beta/demo video I posted above to see what the gameplay should be like) then I can't think what else it could be. While the game is a beta, it's pretty polished. :S

Have you upgraded your graphic drivers recently?

(PS - are you sure that isn't your mess? I would certainly be playing with lego if I had some right now! ;D)

Post us a dxdiag... I'll have a squint at it for you!

  4. Hmm... that is a bit odd mate! What are your specs? You're right in that the game takes a bit to start up as it preloads common assets before the game starts to speed up going from planet to planet and system to system, but 10 minutes sounds a bit long...

    Lemme go time!

OK - it took my laptop (2.2GHz Centrino2, nvidia 9600MGS, 3GB of RAM) 2m 39s to go from staring at the Windows desktop to being in my save game and flying around.

(PS - stick with it, while it looks simplistic, I assure you it is quite deep. The randomly generated missions, the faction systems, the ability to spec out your own ships etc... so much good going for it!)

  5. Yo yo peoples... time for another indie gaming update. :)

I'm currently playing through Space Pirates and Zombies... it's a bit of an odd game that has got me slightly captivated with it's charm.

Basically SPAZ is a top down 2D rpg/shootathon that follows the adventures of the Clockwork, a mothership run by a ragtag band of survivors. You have to survive by mining resources, upgrading your ships with new blue prints and components found on your travels. You have to get by by doing randomly generated missions for the iron fisted military or the helpless civilians. Do you join sides in and help oppress the masses, or help them fight for their freedom (or even worse, sit back and watch them duke it out only to scavenge the remains?)

The sectors in the universe are randomly generated at the start of the game, and each sector has a number of items to explore.

People on the forums have likened SPAZ to being a spiritual Star Control 3, which IMO is a good thing. It's currently in beta, and you can preorder it (giving you beta access) via Impulse. :)

    Words from the Website:

    OVERVIEW

Space Pirates and Zombies takes place far enough in the future that Earth has become a toxic backwater planet, so potentially not that far in the future. The galaxy has been colonized by humans, and the only means to travel to new star systems is through highly restricted and well defended warp gates. It is well known that systems closer to the galactic core become richer and richer as well as more scientifically advanced. This has led to theories of a secret system with a cache of treasure or knowledge at the galactic core feeding this growth. As a pirate, you must assemble a fleet and discover what treasure awaits you there.

    THE GALAXY

There are hundreds of stars to visit in SPAZ, and each game galaxy is uniquely generated.

    STAR SYSTEMS

Within each star system there is an ecosystem of events that are influenced by your actions or lack of action. These events will expire over time and represent a War between the factions within the star system. Some events you can even stay out of the way and simply observe, such as fleet battles, and then collect the spoils. Yarr.

    FACTIONS

Each system has two factions you can interact with, but they always dislike one another. The hub of activity in each system for each faction is their Starbase. There you can purchase technology, or trade captured crew for resources and other favors. If a faction is not friendly with you, they wont deal with you, but transferring a few workers to the Starbase can usually grease the wheels just enough. Approaching a hostile Starbase to make the trade is another matter entirely.

    THE FLEET

As the game progresses, you increase the size of your mothership and thus the size of the fleet which it can maintain. Only your mothership is able to breach the warp gates between systems. The player can fly any of the ships in the fleet real time with AI pilots as wingmen. New ship designs are added to the fleet through combat. Each time a ship is destroyed, some of the knowledge to build that ship becomes available. If you can kill it, eventually you can fly it.

    SHIP DESIGN

As the player explores star systems, they will come across new technologies to purchase.

Upgrading your ships to use the latest tech is always desirable, but can be expensive. Technologies are usually not

  6. One for the zombie lovers here...

Just seen this article over at Rock Paper Shotgun (god, that website is responsible for me spending so much money) about an upcoming indie game called Project Zomboid and I thought it might pique interest over here!

Basically the gist of it is that you're a survivor in a zombie apocalypse, and you have to do anything to survive. This includes building and crafting things, and making alliances and trading with (or killing and stealing from) NPCs who are also trying to survive. The game will be completely randomised each time you start (a la Minecraft) so no two games will be the same.

Snippet from the RPS article for your consumption:

This forthcoming indie, zombie, open-world, browser-based RPG (IZOBRPG?) was a bit of a Twitter sensation the other week, thanks to him what co-wrote Father Ted linking to it, but mean, paranoid rotters that we are on RPS, we decided to hold off posting until there was some footage to accompany the appealing concept. The 3-man team of Britishers behind it, Indie Stone, are funding the game with pre-orders " so let the below be the shells for your shotgun-of-purchase decision-making. Yes.

Important things of important note: the below is incredibly early footage, it

  7. Number 6 is due to some realistic views - not everybody 50 years after the fall of Human civilization will still properly call most of the weapons by their names even regardless markings and some tech info. It is probably more accurate to call the weapons by what they actually represent (5.56mm assault rifle, 5.56mm combat rifle, 5.56mm advanced rifle etc.). At least i think so :P

Avatar is an old model of Tyranid Hive Tyrant. It is from Warhammer 40K tabletop game.

Fair enough mate. Makes sense to me... after many years of using tools, people might not remember the name for it but instead describe it. But then, how come they remember the 5.56mm bit? :S

Bleh at the Tyranid... looks exactly like one of the Aliens!

  8. The comming update will include a major change isn weapon availability:

    1. Laputians will be able to produce only basic USA military firearms and some common stuff: usp, mac10, mp5, spas12, m4, m14, m60, sr25, m79, law. Energy and other non-firearms weapons will remain as is.

    2. All other firearms player will have to salvage from all 4 factions.

    3. In order to produce ammo for .44mag, 7.62x39 and even .50 cal player will be forced to salvage some of these weapons and research them.

    4. all buildable firearms will become available after two following techs: small firearms (pistol, smg, shotgun) and heavy firearms (m4, m14, m60 and sr25).

    5. There will no longer be special or advanced firearms - all those weapons will be salvagable with some of them (such as pkp or vss) being quite rare. Player will get only one commando firearm - mp5sd6 for production after researching weapon supplements.

    6. All weapons will be renamed and called like '5.56mm Assault Rifle' or '5.56mm Combat Rifle' (m4 and g36).

Most of these changes are already done. All what is left is to update all faction squad equipment and test it to hunt certain bugs that may be present after such modifications.

    All sounds good Okim! :P

What spurred on the decision behind number 6 (renaming weapons)?

Also, your avatar. It looks like a Xenomorph from Aliens, but what game is your avatar from? :)

  9. It's amazing how easy it is to enjoy the game and let yourself get sucked in by it.

One of my private gas mining stations came under attack from a lone space pirate out to make a quick buck extorting protection money out of me. Things were looking grim for the occupants of the station; I refused to pay out of principle (the Moocow Empire do not negotiate with terrorists), and help was one system away.

The pirate was merrily blasting the station when all of a sudden, 12 ships from the 3rd Moocow Fleet appeared out of hyperspace, surrounding the pirate.

He lasted about 5 seconds. :)

Okim , thank you for this, I really wanted an opinion from somebody who played all latest games I find interesting - and got to know them deep enough to mod most of them!

EDIT; Hmmmm, considering I never played Space Empires games (go figure), this might be the game I SHOULD try. I admit I find the automation - and your suggestion on suggestions - very interesting.

I DO hope it will come to GG, this definitely is the store of my choice.

I don't think it will be coming to GG, as Matrix Games are publishing and selling via their own store. I think you can pay via PayPal though.

  10. It does look promising.

I did have a chuckle though when I read the first line at the top of this screenshot. Obviously it's ben cut short, but I can just imagine the crew of some sort of explorer vesel all being very serious and then when they make their discovery the bridge turns into the dancefloor from Saturday Night Fever :)

    ROFL! Missed that one!

"Captain, we've discovered a life form covered in gold medallions and flares... what should we do?"

    "FIRE ALL TORPEDOS!"

  11. Stuff

Completely agree mate. I had high hopes for this but never mind. Roll on A:CM!

I've just posted this on my clan forum:

I'll be honest mate, I'm regretting buying it (and I'm one of the biggest Aliens fans I know - you only need to look at my book shelf to see that!).

Graphics are pretty, the settings are spot on but the game is severely underwhelming so far. Running around as the Alien isn't as fun was it was in the original and second AvP game... you have to press a button to attach yourselves a surface like a toggle. Doesn't feel as fluid as it used to.

Playing the marine campaign and I dunno... something isn't sitting right. They ripped set pieces straight out of Aliens (right down to the lines you hear other marines screaming in the background) which seems lazy to me.

The alien AI is weird. They seem to stalk you across the ceiling and stick to the shadows (which is pretty cool), but then when they come to attack, they're... slow (it's hard to explain). When they do pounce, combat becomes a rock-paper-scissors affair. Alien got the drop on you and about to headbite you? No worries, just punch him in the face! Why use superior fire power when you can spam melee attacks!

The aliens seem to be able to survive a grenade to the face. You can only throw one flare at a time, and the torch you can use is so useless I forget to turn it on!

Can't comment on the Pred campaign; I haven't started it yet but after playing the other two campaigns I'm not hopeful. sad.gif

On the plus side, the main menu is quite well done.

  12. Burn the witch!

It actually looks quite interesting. The expansion and exploration process will have to be substantial if it's going to make up more of the gameplay, but it will make a nice change from exterminating all and sundry.

Hehe, I can't help it, I just find turn based so yawntastic! I played games that were real time (excellence such as K240 and Fragile Allegiance :D)

There's a video on the exploration side of things IIRC :)

  13. Afternoon chaps,

Didn't know where to post this, but I thought it'd be of particular interest to the people on this site (being a strategy game :D).

The game is called Distant Worlds, and after reading about it, it looks like a cross between Imperium Galactica 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, MOO and a variety of other space games.

Normally, 4X games don't take my fancy (I like the priniciple of 4x, but I hate turn based games with a passion), but this one is real time! Now, Sins didn't keep my attention due to it being more combat orientated, and having limited progression in other areas such as research and diplomacy. Hopefully, it'll be as good the videos show it to be.

While the graphics aren't cutting edge, the gameplay looks like it should more than make up for it.

From what I can tell, it's being made by a one man outfit from New Zealand, and is extremely close to release.

    Official site - https://www.codeforce.co.nz/

    Article about it - https://www.spacesector.com/blog/2010/01/di...-strategy-game/

    :)

  14. It's titled The Rise and Fall of the Flying Island. It was written by Martin Klima and illustrated by Tomas Kucerovsky.

It details protests and a resistance movement being suppressed by the Laputan government, and Laputa's self-destruction when it looks like some of the rebels are going to escape. It's quite sad. ;)

As FA said, it's very sad, but also very good. :oh:

EDIT: The small story 'Poor Bargain' also supplied was very good. It details one soldiers perspective during Aftermath, and the surrender to the Reticulans.
