  1. Well, to start with, whenever I enter a lobsterman terror site, they are all dead. The biodrones, that is.

Well, to be more exact, they all die at the start of the first turn after the equipscreen. Scared the hell out of me the first time with a deafening KLANGsquish.

Now the huge question is *why*? The only thing I've really done is to install Xcomutil, and that's it.

Now.. I probebly shouldn't be complaining. Those lobstermen are a handfull as it is... but I can't stop worrying that this might be a syntom of some larger, game-breaking data corruption problem.

Has this happened to anyone else?

  2. The sounds didn't play to well for me until I switched to software mode. Then they were all fine.

Now the guns sound like guns, the explosions sound like explosions, the footsteps make nice sounds for every type of surface etc... I think it was a problem whereby having hardware sound on and zooming out on the battlefield didn't play a lot of the sounds.

What do you seem to be having problems with?

Aftershock will go completely pants if you're using a soundcard with surround sound and will then only play sounds that lacks a direction.. such as voices, geoscape beeps, music and ambient sound.

If you do, either disable surround functions or run the game in software sound mode.

  3. I tried all  playing modes (safe, hi-qual and normal) and I still can't see them.I can't activate LoS mode either.Bloody help me!

What kind of graphics card do you have? If it's not supported, Aftershock disables advanced viewing modes because it would kill the computer if you'd try.

  4. Yeah.. your English is awful, but not as much the spelling as the oh-my-god-so-awful "any1" and so forth.

Knock that shit off. Please. This isn't AOL.

I'd advice you to get the newest set of ATI's Radeon drivers. Even if you have a supported card, your drivers might not be supported. Do at all times keep your drivers updated, as they are backwards compatible. I think you can sign up for ATI's news letter which will inform you when new drivers become available.

  5. Just a quick one here....Has anyone tried sonic weapons on those flatsters since sonic waves can turn those jelly organs into mush?

If I'm not mistaken, Flasters have high resistant to everything save energy weapons.. fire is somewhat efficant and so is acid. Energy weapons is definitly the way to go. Even weak energy weapons are efficant against them as they don't really have that much health, but shitloads of damage resistance. Also, be sure to research flaster autopsy as it will allow you troops to get bonous damage for thier enemy skill. There you can also read it's resistance specifics.

When encountering one while not carrying an energy weapon:

I'm asuming your troops are moving in at least small groups so..

    1) Put all weapons to snap fire

    2) Put all weapons that have it, to burst mode.

    3) Forget grenade launchers and rocket launchers. These buggers are quick!

    4) It has somewhat less resistance to mechanical (melee) attacks than projectiles. A katana can be of good use here. I've seen a commando take down flatsers on either own with only a katana. Sure, she got a bit hurt and was damn lucky it didn't use it's burn attack, but she killed it good.

Most troops, unless thier speed is poor or awful, should be able to outrun a flaster. If your soldier is alone and without a suitable weapon, turn heel and race back to get help.

Also, spotting a flaster at a distance will grealty increase your chances of killing it without taking any damage. The problem is that flasters are.. well.. flat, have good stealth skill and can not be detected by psys, as they are too dumb. Whenever you expect enemies to be about, slow to a walk. Walking instead of running will make it easier to spot enemies before they spot you.

An other tip is that if you do spot a flaster that hasn't spotted you jet, hit it with a grenade. Even if there's no animation for it, they will be "knocked to the ground" momentarily by the blast, time which you could use to either close in and pour it full of lead, cut it up or get into a good firing position for when it does come at you.

  6. I tend to train most as Snipers first so that they can hit stuff at range even with normal rifles. Then I train them as Gunmen for the ability to use Heavy Armour, get more hitpoints and the ability to stay standing when taking a grenade in the face. It kind of varies after that as to what I do for the third lot of training, but generally it doesn't matter too much as they're pretty tough by then.

    Errr...

Snipers get better long range skill than rifles. Long range skill only applies to sniper class weapons, ei, those that require sniper training.

Anyways, that's not a very clever tactic. It's better to compare soldier stats to different classes to see what they are best qualified for. No class is really better than any other, it all depends on how they are used.

A man with a smg, especially a duel wielding ranger, can beat a man with a rifle in CQC combat, since the smg aims ridiculesly much faster, and pistols even more so. A man with a shotgun will however very likely sweep the floor with the guy with the smg at point blank range, but a good smg user can hit very accuratly from well outside the shotguns range.

A melee fighter might not stand much of a chance in the open, but in enclosed areas, especially when it's so cramped that enemy soldiers are blocking each other, the katana is king. My commando slized a bloody swath through a group of 5 cultists in a base assault mission, because they all got bunched up in a one got in the way of an other, and by the time he'd moved into a possition to get a clear shot, she had already cut his comrade down and was aiming a slash at his face.. then the other three who had fallen behind got bunched up in a doorway and was brutally hacked to bits.

Likewise, a sniper, even one equiped with an SR-25, is in serious shit when encounterning enemies at close range, but on the open field, they'll blow off heads left and right.

A trooper with a grenade launcher can wreck serious damage on enemies that are moderatly bunched up, especially if working in tandem with a LMG wielding tech or gunman.

A machinegun wielder can alone hold thier own against a large opposing force as well, thanks to being able to keep insane amounts of lead in the air at any time. Ammunition is cheap and quick to make. I rather seldom used the aimed shot function with the lmgs.. they fire almost twice as fast with snap shot and even if you have 30% or 40% chance of hitting, that still means that you're likely to have a larger over all chance of hitting than one aimed salov... and don't forget, stray rounds can still hit any enemy standing around the intended target. I once killed three cultists with one PKM salvo.. hit the intended target with two rounds, which put him out of business, and then scored a critical hit on a cultist psyionic and hit a sniper in the back of thier squad, which my own sniper had already softened up.

The only weapon I'm still not completely sure about are the rocket launchers. For the most time, the enemy I'm trying to hit has already moved out of the way when the rocket gets there, and trying to lead targets is usually unsuccesful, as they can change direction or simply stop where they concider themselves to be in range. I do suspect I'm yet to encounter something that I would need it for. I was jumping with joy when I encountered the first car crabs in Aftermath.. finally something to use my anti-tank weaponry against ;)

  7. I think I have 14 soldiers.

    Lets see:

1 Human sniper - tears people apart from crazy distances with her .50 cal

2 Human gunmen - Just regular hardasses, one has an m60, the other an XM8

2 Human troopers - XM8 with grenade launchers, baby. Also drags LAWs around.

1 Human scout - Sneaky rifleman with a silenced and scoped M4 and a shitload of grenades. Spots targets for the snipers.

1 Human medic - SPAS-12 wielding field surgeon

1 Human stalker/ranger - Usually CQC backup for the scout

1 Cyborg trooper - Grenadier. As 20mm grenades are cheap as dirt and takes no time to make, he tends to use a lot. Also carries an RPG-7 and a pair of reloads in his backpack.

1 Cyborg technician - RPK.. "In Soviet Russia..."

    1 Cyborg ranger - Duel wields Mp5s

1 Psy commando - Psys acctually make exellent commandos. Hire one early and train them up.. if you either make or recover a katana early on they can hold thier own extremly well. When you get thier dodge skill up to heroic and give them an interferance circlet, they'll kick ass like no ones business

1 Psy.. err... psy - Carries a wide array of projectors.

1 Psy medic/sniper - Works as close sniper support for the rest of the squad, usually with the SR-25

That way I can keep a full squad at all times, regardless of injuries or training. Or, I can mix and match troops for specific missions. I like scouting out a mission site to get the lay of the land and an idea of potential dangers.. like, if there's lot of open terrain, possiblity of lots of indoor fighting, etc, and then I load the autosave and equip my squad to suit the situation.

I wouldn't concider it cheating, as it would seem logical to me that the Laputa (am I the only who reacts to that "La puta" means "the whore" in Spanish?) would be able to provide good recon photos ;)

  8. <<Joint Post - Xathia Anadere (Atzel) and Sgt. Faith Redwood (DH)>>

Setting: An Ascidian military hospital, where the alien survivor from the crashsite was transported.

[03:15] <Xathia> ::Is laying in her hospital bed, apperantly sleeping, because her eyes are closed and she's breathing rythmically.. she's covered with a blanket from the waist down and has large bandage over her chest where the ascidian surgeons had to operate to patch up her lung and fix her ribs.. she's got several stitches in her face and seems a bit swollen, otherwise alright.

[03:17] <SGT_Redwood> ::Faith stood outside the door, debating with herself. She knew her hatred of aliens wasn't terribly logical, Jon had made her see that, but that didn't make it easier to think about. Of course, she had in her tow a translator, so really she was already committed. She took a breath, then stepped through the door.:: Uhh... hi.

[03:25] <Xathia> ::Opens her eyes and they turn to focus on Faith. She doesn't move a limb, not change her expression... her gaze passes between you and the translator. "Hello", she rasps out in a dry voice::

[03:26] <SGT_Redwood> ::Technically, this was a new experience. Faith stepped farther into the room and closer to the alien.:: Hi... Uhh, my name is Faith. Who are you? ::Faith felt slightly silly at this - the alien wasn't a child.::

[03:31] <Xathia> ::Rolls her eyes and sits up in the bed, scooting back to make herself more comfortable:: Xathia....Anadere... ::she rasps it out, her throat most likely worse for fear after having breathed so much smoke:: I sense that you're not here to do pleasant small talk...Faith. What would you have of me?

[03:33] <SGT_Redwood> I actually have no purpose here, except to check up on the life I hope I helped. ::That part, the part of her that was purely human, still remembered that compassion, and it was not a distasteful or painful memory:: I grow curious about your health in this place. I know very few who have been under Ascidian care.

[03:40] <Xathia> ::Hrmps:: Yes.. I remember that.. And you have my thanks ::she bows her head slightly, the jewlery in her crest tinkling:: and the Ascidian are treating me all right but.. ::she looks around, slightly wild eyed:: They won't let me leave.. I've tried.. I need to get out of here.. if I stay for two long, I'm dead. Do you understand?

[03:41] <SGT_Redwood> ::Fatih frowned. The military hospital wasn't what she would call safe, but it wasn't exactly an easy place for this Xathia to be found.:: I understand what you are saying, but I do not understand why you say this.

[03:44] <Xathia> Don't you understand? We were running, me and my comrades.. from bounty hunters of my own race.. we are fugitives.. I'm dead if I stay here for too long, they will find out where I am.. ::she pauses, concidering what she just said::...err..I'm innocent, err, of course. Wrongly accused ::she carries on half heartedly::

[03:45] <SGT_Redwood> ::This was tricky territory to be conversing about, especially with a virtual unknown.:: I don't believe that anything but a sizable quantity of bounty hunters would retrieve you here, nor would I think that the Ascidians would simply tell them where you are, as a majority simply do not know.

[03:50] <Xathia> ::Growls, baring her menacing teeth:: You think so, do you? I've already lost two of my comrades to the Wraiths.. they are craftier than you think. They might not know where I am yet.. but the doctors say I have to stay here until I'm healed.. ::her eyes glance about the room.. you can tell that she's scared shitless:: ... I know I am already in your dept.. but...

[03:52] <SGT_Redwood> You cannot simply leave. Even if you were turned loose right now, where would you go? There is nowhere. ::Faith shook her head sadly. It was highly unlikely, in any event. Bounty hunters might have connections, but few Ascidians even knew of this race... Her eyes hardened as her mind latched onto the last.:: Do you have a request of me?

[03:56] <Xathia> ::Looks up, seeming to collect her thought... she seems sadned for a moment:: ... could you help me out of this place? I need... somewhere else to be ::the translator seems slightly confused, possibly grammatic error on her part:: I.. we... had the Wraith on our tail when we crashed.. this is the type of place they'll start looking in

[03:58] <SGT_Redwood> ... ::Faith thought. It was unlikely that even many Wraiths could simply just walk in and out of hospitals... What Xathia did not know was that there was a war going on, and that war had produced dozens if not hundreds of such facilities over the globe. Maybe not many could handle an alien biology.:: I would not know where to try. Will you keep running?

[04:06] <Xathia> ::looks at Faith for a few seconds she blinks.. she leans back, concidering this.. after a while she says:: Yes. If I can not hide, I will have to run. I have a death sentence hanging over me, so the Wraith will kill me on sight.. but... ::she sighs:: I do not wish to.. and now, I am alone....

[04:08] <SGT_Redwood> In a way, I too am alone here, but I have found a refuge with my brother and his comrades... ::Faith thought about that statement carefully. Maybe it was worth considering later.:: Perhaps I can speak with my commander.

[04:15] <Xathia> ::Raises a brow and glances at Faith:: ...that reminds me... who are you people and... if its no offense in asking so.. what are you... I've never seen anything quite like you...

[04:17] <SGT_Redwood> No, no offense. We call ourselves Humans. We come from... we come from a long way from here. We've encountered the... ::Faith looked at the Ascidian, then back to Xathia.:: ...the Starspawn in our home too, and we've formed an alliance with these people, the Ascidians.

[04:24] <Xathia> ::Growls at the mention of Star Spawn:: ...I see ::she says, simply:: Interesting... well then.. if you would care to make inquiries concerning the possibility to offer my any help, I would indeed be deeply indepted to you. ::she bows her massive head slightly to you::

[04:25] <SGT_Redwood> I will do so. And I will return when I have an answer. ::Faith adjusted her uniform. The fit of it didn't seem quite right... it wasn't what she was used to.:: I will return, I promise it will be so.

[04:35] <Xathia> ::Nods and smiles.. at least you can hope it's a smile:: Thank you... I won't be going anywhere

    <<End>>

    Dum dum daaaaa!

The plot has reached a thickness of lukewarm peasoup, what will Cyriacus say? What manner of crime did Xathia get convicted to?

Stay tuned for the next epidose of: "The Fugitive SF series - We couldn't buy Ford"
