you see that little pencil picture with the words "edit" next to it? use it.

Quote

when u add DDR RAM, it increases your buffers

hrm...i dunno. maybe. i think that the buffers/files thing isn't used much anymore, thats all. the cheaper (and simpler) alternative it just to add the buffers line to your system file (again, i havn't bothered checking which one yet).

edit: oh, and by the way, my PC is PII 300mHz sometimes o'clocked to 373mHz or 450mHz, 124MB DDR ram, 4MB shared onboard VGA (thats where the 4MB out of the 128 went), onboard sound. yes, i know, dodgy PC, but not bad for $150/200 AU(i forget how much my dad paid), huh? anyway, my buffers are 0 and files are 40, while my other pc (P1 200mHz, 144MB ram, onboard everything) has the right specs.

dude...the buffers are the amount of memory that your PC will be able to cope with at one time basically....they have everything to do with being able to actually play apoc....u would'nt even get apoc completely installed without a number of buffers...i think the minimum is like 12/40 that it will accept and let apoc actually go in and be played....u need buffers for it no matter what...

and also.....what the hell do i need to edit for? i've got the boldness that i want...thats all...
wait...i see what u mean by edit...anywaysu have a PII and zero buffers....u are using XP and can't get it too work huh?

Well heres another problem 4 u geniuses, When ever I try 2 install XCOM it goes fine till it checks the CDROM speed, then it freezes. It is a 40x+ DVDRW drive. BTW I also have XP (of course) Y can microsoft make a windows that will run anything? (rhetorical question) Y do u think they released XP? 98 was too good and no-one was buying new copies of it. That and theyr'e are deliberate bugs in XP that surface if u burn it, which I am now fully aquainted with.

ahh...that reminds me. today, i just read about something called "Fade". its something producers can incorporate into the game that deliberatly look to "scratches" put purposly onto the cd by producers. if there is none, you can play normally, but over time, things go wonky. i.e. guns run out of bullets, aim goes way off, gravity is disabled (taht was an example for pool/snooker). they did that so if they get a pirated version, they can play just long enough that they can get hooked, so once it stuffs up, they go out and buy the real thing. kinda weird, eh?

When u edit the XCOM3.bat file or whatever its called, it should look like this

@echo off
fakecd .. /L:D >nul
xcom3_cd.com
dosdrv
xcomapoc.exe SKIP
rem Uninstall process
xcom3_cd.com
fakecd /U >nul
mode co80
cls
echo.
echo X-COM3 Apocalypse from Alex-God.
echo Don't forget Microprose Corporation...
pause

U could copy and paste it but mine may be different from yours, so the REALLY IMPORTANT THING IS, to put the line 'dosdrv' between the lines 'xcom3_cd.com' and 'xcomapoc.exe SKIP'. As you can see here i have done it to mine already.

The other thing is to go into the setup program and change the settings to soundblaster on port=220 irq=7 dma=1. You also need to have VMDsound installed.

I hope with this post, there will be no more, or few posts about apoc xp problems because this should answer everything, and if it doesnt, than im just stupid  .

up:

Thx for the reply, i did all of this, including the setup change, I also tried other sound configurations in VDM, but none work ( I can play apoc without sound, doh )

If anyone has any other ideas, i will be greatful if you share it with me.

Woohow, mine works too now.

About the "fresh out of box" this isn't true, my installation is Windows XP Pro DK (Denmark AKA Danish) and is "fresh out of the box"

My sound works perfectly when using VDMsound and my soundcard is a SoundBlaster Live! B880

About the mousectl, you can't find it at the aforementioned site anymore, but you can find it and all other utilities here:
http://home.comcast....nder_winxp.html
Another thing about the mousectl, yes it DOES scroll in the wrong direction, but only for a second, if you hold your mouse on the edge it starts scrolling the right way.

About the no_cd, ...
(Sorry, no cracks, please.    - Bomb Bloke)

Haven't tested the video on my system yet.

Hey All,

I played Apocalypse years ago on my old pc and i lost it,
now i have A new PC with XP on it and after me searching everywhere to
get the game it wont even install,I bought the 5 games and i can
only get UFO and TFTD to work, an error comes up saying
" E:\install.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\autoexec.nt. The system files is not suitable
for runnng MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications "

Can anyone help me with this? I think its sumthing to do with 16 bit file
or sumthing like that,

Beats me what causes the error, but autoexec.nt is a dummy file that Windows uses to help load dos games.

I actually can't make any sense of the error at all. Hmm.

Odd indeed. I installed Apocalypse on my XP machine and it never complained about autoexec.nt one bit. While it did complain about my files/buffers, I could install it anyway, regardless. (The game only really needs 'files' to be set).

For me, the game installs fine and is even able to play sounds in the sound setup, and even the intro plays (sans the usual choppiness that I've grown so accustomed to), but the moment the actual game executable starts, bam, back to the console. I don't know if Dosbox'll help, but I might give it a try some day.

Note autoexec.bat still seems to load. I put the line dircmd=/oe in it to sort files by extension whenever I type DIR, and it appears to be in effect every time I boot up the computer.

Interesting. Autoexec.nt mentions that XP emulates a Sound Blaster 2.0... Probably explains why I had little trouble using a sound blaster. Wish Windows 98 did that for modern sound cards.

As far as I understand it, the .nt files are used for the DosVM whenever you start a Dos program.

I don't suppose you could show us the contents of your C:\WINDOWS\system32\autoexec.nt file, Gilesy?
