This is Cyberstorm. A Mech Commander style strategy game in the Earthsiege/Tribes universe produced in 1996. You take on the role of a junior officer that has just been hired on by the military arm of a megacorp called Unitech. You start with the ability to have up to three genetically engineered clones called Bioderms that have been designed to pilot mechs called HERCs much faster and more precisely than a normal human could. As you play you rise in rank and can have more mechs and pilots on the roster and better equipment. There's also a rather interesting plot that unravels as you play through the game that I'm not going to spoil here so...

And the two starting mechs. The Shadow is a great dedicated scout platform so long as you can keep it out of enemy fire. The Remora should be rather quickly replaced as soon as new technology is allowed and funds are acquired for better equipment.

This is the HERC Base. From here you can go to the HERC Bay and manage your mechs, the Bioderm Facility to manage your pilots and the HERC Command Center to select missions.

First we'll go to the These are your two starting mechs, the 1 Shadow and 1 Remora, We'll keep them as default for the first mission.

Here's where we pick our missions. The only one we're allowed to go on at the moment is that training mission. I guess they don't trust us not to do something stupid like taking on the Cybrid Command and Control in this system just yet!

This is the info on the planet that this lone turret that we have to kill is on. 52% gravity means we can run about double the distance per turn. Now that the basics of the game are out of the way, let's go blast some 'brids.

Here we start out next to the craft that brought us to this planet, the HERC Carrier. If this protoplastic trash fails, the pilot will take off and leave them to die then Unitech will make good on that threat about leaving me on some barren moon with a beacon around my neck..

Mission successful. We didn't get the bonus for Unitech coming back and mining all the ore in the area since there was an enemy still alive.

Ahhh a promotion! Now we aren't confined to just having utter garbage. The 2 of the 3 new HERCs that we now have access to are quite good. The Ogre will be the front line fighter for the time being until something better comes along while the Giant will stay useful the entire game as a form of cheap artillery. The Sensei isn't that great. You get a mech that's a mediocre scout that gets slowed way down when you actually arm it. The key to scouts in Cyberstorm is make it light, make it fast, and keep it out of enemy weapons range.

Welcome back folks. We have 15,000 credits in the bank and need to prepare for a mining mission to further gain networth to get better equipment to make more money to buy better equipment. Quite the vicious cycle isn't it? 15,000 is about enough for a second Remora and one of the cheaper pilots that we just unlocked with the promotion.

This is the standard model of Remora that we started with except that the shields were upped from 600 to 900, and life support and targeting computer improved to the best available. Downgrading the legs from reinforced to standard has given us a speed increase while dropping the total cost back down to a few hundred credits over stock.

Next we go to the biovat and clone up the cheapest of the new pilots, Kyoko. She sucks, but she's miles better than the crap we started with.

She is then trained to improve her piloting ability slightly and then assigned to the new Remora.

After we get our squad together, we go to select the mining mission. This world is much like the last, a barren airless hellhole infested with cybrids that are trying to take our ore.

Yep, we're going to be the exterminator this time, no simply mining the quota of ore for the bonus. Here we will kill all enemies and have Unitech mine the ore for us and give us the money for all that ore we wouldn't be able to pick up with the extractors on 3 HERCs.

And we touch down presumably about 2 weeks later on this barren planet. Luckily we manage to catch the cybrids in the act of stealing our ore right off the bat and prepare to attack them.

I guess we got their attention. The Cerebrus came to point blank range and opened fire, lightly damaging Model 101's HERC. We fire on it again, lightly wounding it back. and it flanks us in the next turn and shoots her in the back where her shields are weaker.

Finally we get our revenge when our lasers finally take down the shields on the Cybrid and three volleys of missiles take it out.

Model 101's HERC has taken moderate damage now and she's starting to show signs of genetic instability. We'd better keep her out of enemy fire for a while and let her shields recharge before we get her killed.

NOOO! That lone Parasite, the weakest HERC the Cybrids have has just killed our Shadow and the Remora piloted by our new Bioderm. Can Model 101 keep it together and pull through for the win? Or will she die in battle with the rest of the squad and get commander Jman abandoned on this moon with a becon around his neck? Welcome back folks! When we left yesterday we had two badly damaged HERCs squared off against each other fighting over an ore deposit. Our Remora was down to a rating of 36% and the pilot was about to dissociate into a puddle of protoplasm if she had to take much more of a fight. How did this battle end? Did our hero prevail? Or did the Cybrids remain in control of the ore?

Despite being heavily damaged, and her two lasers missing the target at point blank range, Model 101 manages to take down the Parasite with the small amount of damage that her autocannons and missiles dealt that bypassed the shields. Another turn and she would have surely died and we would have lost the battle.

Luckily we received 51k from this mission. The scrapheap of a HERC we left the battle with is worth around 9k, quite a lot considering it was shot to hell and nearly lost. We have a value of around 60k which is more than double our net worth from before the mission. This should be enough to outfit a halfway decent squad now and not be stuck fielding Remoras as our main battle HERCs.

Upon returning to base we go into the HERC Bay to rebuild our forces.

This Remora is trashed but still retains about 85% of it's original value we're going to sell it to get our money back out of it and spend it buying some Ogres.

Here we see Ogres for around 19k, we should be able to buy 2 of them and have our Shadow replaced since we have to have a scout or we're blind. Any left over funds will be used to tweak weapons loadouts and to buy more pilots.

These babies have 18cm armor on them, compared to the 5cm that the Remoras carry. We also added a Flexive drive system to boost speed and improved our targeting, life support and shields to the best that this chasis can equip. This pushes the total value of each up to 21k credits. Will they be as good as two 11k Remoras? We'll have to see.

Now we have just under 13k to spend on pilots. First we're going to recycle the hero of the last mission and reclaim the credits instead of healing her back to her lovely protoplasmic self. This will get us 675, you could buy another one for much less than it would cost to heal it. She only costs 740 credits new, why be sentimental? :)

A long agonizing death scream later we go into the Biovat to scroll through available Bioderms. Sadly Tola's 50k price tag is out of our reach...One day Tola, you will be mine!

Scrolling through the Bioderms we find one in our price range that's good at piloting and energy weapons and decent at cannons. Just what our Ogres need. I'll take two, Dr. Frankenstien.

And we buy a Kyoko for our Shadow before finishing up here with some cannon training for Kouras 1 and 2. Next stop: The Planet Ora. A lifeless ball of grey dust that we must secure the ore on.

Welcome back, when we left off yesterday we had just upgraded our fighting force from Remoras to Ogres. Much better anti shield damage, but they lack missiles. So we're sadly leaving the Shadow armed with them at the cost of a massive speed reduction. We also have 3 of the crappier new Bioderms since we can't afford a horde of Tolas just yet. More mining missions should change that though:

Here we are landed on the planet Ora. Another lifeless rock similar to the moon covered in ore that we're here to exploit. Let's start exploring the surface with the Shadow until we find those pesky cybrids that are here to take our ore.

48k total take, not bad for 1 turn mission. That automined ore bonus was awesome that time. Remember folks, kill all the cybrids, you get all the ore. :)

Back at base we have enough credits to fully kit out the 4 HERCs we're allowed to have at our rank. Since missiles are what seems to be desiding battles quickly, we'll pick out the Sensei over the Giant for the time being.

Our Shadow is being rebuilt to maximize its speed and sensor range with only the missiles left. With luck we'll be able to keep it behind our other three HERCs during cybrid turns and it won't be shot up.

This is our new HERC. We only have it because it's better than a Remora. It can carry missiles that are 50% stronger than the two light HERCs can carry, and it has autocannons. Sadly, it's limited to only laser 400s for the arms.

Our Ogres are going to be outfitted to the max laser 1000s in place of the 660s and 30mm chainguns replacing the cannons. These upgrades cost about 10k for each mech leaving use with only about 6k to spend on another pilot, so we'll have to ditch the chains for this mission to get the best pilot for the money: Xian

Xian is the perfect fit for the Ogre chasis. High in energy and cannon weapons. Much higher than anything else in his price range. We'll recycle one of the Kouras clones and buy two of these. The other Kouras can pilot the Shadow since he's the best in piloting skill and the Sensei goes to Kyoko since she's better with missiles.

Welcome back guys. When we left off last we had just gotten a promotion from our corporate masters allowing us to command a force of 6 HERCs. They also gave us an awesome bioderm that apparently destroyed a friendly base solo..hopefully he won't repeat that here with the Giant we're giving him *crosses fingers, toes and legs*

First we'll buy a Giant and equip it with the best cannons on the sides, and 2 blast mortars on the roof. What a plast mortar is is a plasma type weapon that fires in an arc and has an area effect. When we start to attack bases, these things are devistating to the shields of buildings.

The Ogres are going to be upgraded to have compression lasers, these are the same as the old lasers expect that they do double the armour damage. Perhaps now the Ogres can reliably kill things without the help of missiles from the Sensei. In addition, the Sensei will get compression lasers on its arms and the Shadow will be stripped bare allowing it to move faster.

After buying another Ogre and equipping it to the same spec as the others, we'll buy another Xian for it. We'll soon be getting to the point of buying Tola clones for these things :)

If you can see on the map, two of these Specters are crouching just behind the edge of the hill, this makes them harder to hit. As you can see on Firewarrior's targeting system, they have part of the hill in the way.

Tarsus uses his blast mortars on the Cybrid, but only one connects which doesn't quite take down the shields to allow Firewarrior to fire another missile. Maybe next turn..

Welcome back! When we left off yesterday we just got our first Tola! The best 'derm you can buy. While there are a couple that are arguably better, they are one of a kind and have much shorter lifespans. By the end of the game, we'll probably have a handful of unique guys that Unitech gives to us like Tarsus and about 15 Tolas. So...let's see what this 50k uber 'derm can do!

Upon landing we send the Shadow around the western part of the map while the rest of the team heads east to scout there. The Sensei spots this Parasite on the second turn and Xian approaches and opens fire. A shot of 1000, 2 400s and 4 blasts of the cannons and it dies. Good job Xian!

The Sensei approaches closer and spots the Parasite's big brother, a Genocite. Roughly the same weight as our Ogres, but with missiles instead of cannons. Making it much more dangerous to unshielded targets. Space Voyager, let's see what your new body can do.

Welcome back! We're condensing things a little since the mining missions are a little boring but we need the cash from them, so I'm not showing them when I go on them and just showing the results. Fortunately, as we advance, they get more and more interesting and this business of skipping the missions with 1-2 kills can end!

There she is, the Demon. The HERC that will be our main attack unit until fairly late in the game. It can carry 4 laser 1000s, and 2 missiles, making the Ogre look like a toy in comparison. And finally we can get rid of that Sensei since we finally have missiles on practically every unit on the battlefield now!

This guy is Qabal. Rather than being the perfect Bioderm, he's perfectly average with 60 points in just about everything. Hopefully he dies first and we can put a Tola in his spot..

We can now can field 7 HERCs and with a reserve of 2 Bioderms. Meaning we can rotate them based on the missions we're facing. This is great since we don't have to risk special pilots on silly missions where they aren't really needed while still being able to field their HERC in the hands of another pilot.

Here is our slighly modified Demon. At 60k we should be able to buy 4 of these with current funds. It moves at about half the speed of the Ogre. has about twice the damage potential, and has about 50% more defense. In the hands of a Tola, this thing is the god of the battlefield.

We get the usual threats about screwing up and not being prepared to take on that main Cybrid base in the system. And, some new goodies for Tarsus' Giant, Particle Guns! These are neat, they do awesome armor damage, but they can also do shield damage that the cannons couldn't do. So in a last ditch effort, you can use these to bring down a target's shields to open them up for a missile volley.

This big guy, is a Hades. Roughly the Cybrid equivalent of the Giant. Only it carries a horde of missiles instead of cannons. It's one of the most dangerous enemies you can face. If your shields are down, you're dead against one of these.

Excellent, 85k is the most we're ever taken from a mission! 12 Cybrids were killed, 4 of them the large and dangerous Hades units. If we didn't have those Demons, we wouldn't have stood a chance in that fight, but we managed to get out without losing anybody.

Welcome back! When we left off last we had just accepted a base defense mission. The objective is to protect a group of Unitech installations from a Cybrid attack. We will be dropped into the middle of the base and our HERC carrier will return to orbit, so no resupply will be available.

He takes the shields nearly down as all 4 of his lasers hit, then Tola:2 takes them the rest of the way with a 5th shot from a laser. They both then fire their missiles on it killing it!

Only changes to the unit will be nano repair in place of one of the overdrives as funds allow in the next couple of missions. Speed won't be as important there on anything other than the scout and the Giant that will be used to take out a key building in the base that will give us a lot of trouble.

This is a repair module that can be used to repair up to 250 damage on a HERC. Where this damage is doesn't matter so long as the component isn't completely destroyed. I find it illogical that it takes as much out of this thing to repair a weapon as to repair a leg or the HERC's chassis, but that's how it works. *shrug* We'll be replacing an overdrive on each Demon with one of these and all shields will be taken from 1950 to 2400 as the expense of dropping speed down to 125.

The Giant will get it's jammer replaced with a 4th overdrive. We'll need speed on this unit, since it'll be hitting a critical building in the Cybrid base. With luck, the defending HERCs will be too busy with our Demons to manage to kill the Giant when it starts its suicidal charge!

Welcome back folks. Here we are on the planet Beran, to knock the Cybrids out of the system. This is probably the hardest mission in the game. The other two missions like this one, you have more units and much better technology against forces that are of similar strength to this one. The base is on the other side of the map from our starting point and we'll have to fight our way there. Good luck vat clones!

Ahha! Those two buildings next to the main base complex are what is making all those little walking bombs that we've been running into. Normally, there is only 1. So I guess we just got lucky and have to deal with 2, swell!

We come over the top of the hill after killing one of the walking bomb factories and open fire on the defenders. Two of our Demons take out 2 Specters and a Nihilus with laser blasts to spare!

Boto moved up and fires on the other factory. Since his mortars are area effect, they hit all 6 shield faces at once if they hit the target. To top it off, his weapons down decrease in power with range. He does 300+ damage in each shot! Those lasers were only taking about 20-30 damage each!

We finish off the remaining defending HERCs, the Nihilus and the badly damaged Genocite. Then we start to take out the laser turrets that are just starting to fire on us. Usually they would be placed so that we'd face them on the way to the base, but instead we got more walking bombs that normal, so I guess things balance out.

HERC Base...New technology available. Excellent! Pulse lasers and Reapers and and the SPX missile! We can now dish out nearly double the damage per launcher and the damage can be spread over more targets since 100 per missile tended to be overkill once you had a target already in the red, why waste the extra damage?

All units are upgraded with the final mission loadout being 1 Shadow, 4 Reapers, 1 Demon and 2 Giants. More Reapers will be bought as funds allow, but they are rather expensive at 130,000+ credits while the Giant only comes in at a cheap 56k!

This is Salikh a barren wasteland in the Ionis System. There was once an atmosphere, but now it's gone. And if you look carefully at the bottom, you will notice the first of many such messages that tell you about a certain weapon type not function. Luckily we don't use cannons anymore. But, some planets don't allow our missiles to work which is just plain annoying since that's what Demons and Reapers use to kill with! Anyways. Upon return to the base. The last Demon is sold and a Reaper and a Giant replace it. In a few more missions, we should have a strong enough force to take on the main mission in this system. But. That would cause us to miss out on the plot development and all, so I'll we'll need to wait for the (I think) 3 promotions that we can get here. For now, I will be skipping a few of the minor missions while I "fundraise" off of some Cybrids. Cya at the next promotion, hopefully with some money! :)

Ok, back. 3 missions and roughly 20 kills later, we have a promotion, and boy does it unlock some nice tech!

Foremost of which, is: The AntiGravity Unit. This thing will practically double the speed of any unit that it's installed on, making the high gravity worlds much easier to fight on. And that scout? It's going to be about 2000 speed when we're done with this refit!

This is Ma-Yuan. She's one of the better Bioderms so long as you remember to use Jackup on her every mission since her stats are so low without it. She can easily take 2-3 times more Jackup that any other unit.

Here is our current model of Reaper. We'll now go through all the new tech we've got with this promotion. Literally everything but the armor, drive system, reactor and battery can be upgraded now!

Due to the antigravity, we can now add the biggest shield available and still have a respectable speed fighting unit. This shield will boost our shields by 75 points per face and add about 150 to things if you focus our shields to the front!

New and improved sensors! These have their range boosted from 8 hexes out to 10. They also have a slightly better chance of seeing something behind a cliff or hill.

An improved targeting computer will add 27% to our ability to hit. The old one only had a bonus of 23. Probably the weakest upgrade in this batch of new tech, but every little bit helps!

An interesting energy weapon that is now available is the Neutron Beam Weapon. It does a little over half the shield damage of the pulse lasers that our Reapers have, but on the flip side there is huge increase in armor damage that this baby can do. We'll probably have a few units with them in the squad to reduce our reliance on missiles.

Another weapon that will see limited deployment in our squad is the Hunter-Killer Missile. It does about the same damage per turn as our current missile, but it will last for 8 turns of fire instead of 5. The downside is that you do all the damage in one 200 damage missile instead of four 48 damage ones.

And finally the AntiGravity Unit. This takes our HERC that was 158 speed before we added even more weight that would slow it to 129 and raises it up to 259! Now that is speed!

The AntiGravity Unit yields a rather shocking speed increase for the Shadow. It goes from 1126 all the way up to 2041, making an already speedy unit nearly twice as fast. If things were scaled up to real life sizes, this thing would probably be running at supersonic speeds!!!

The Giant finally claims its place as artillery platform with the addition of Plasma Mortars! On this unit we will keep the two Blast Mortars that it had, and replace the MPGs with Plasma Mortars. Plasma Mortars fire twice a turn, and do more damage, but they get their range reduced from 20 hexes to 12. Add on an AntiGrav and you get a heavy HERC nearly as fast as the light units that we started with!

This is our final squad loadout after everything had been upgraded and we're left with only 271 credits to our name! Everything is the same in each model except for SV and FW's Reapers. They have 2 NBWs each and will get HK Missiles when finances permit.

Welcome back! When we left off we had just accepted a mission on Dorn to kill all the Cybrids on the map. This is mainly to test the loadouts on the HERCs we just bought. We'll be dropped into the middle of a squad of Cybrids and will be without the carrier until we're done.

Welcome back folks! This time with new and improved .flv awesomeness!

 

 

Just your standard kill everything on the map kind of mission. The scout advances to find targets, the combat HERCS fire on said targets. The good thing about having video is that it's easier to follow and less work documenting afterward. That mission only took about 20min of total work vs about an hour if it were screenshots and documentation. Hopefully all of the follow ups can be like that and simply added to a playlist on youtube so they can be played sequentially. I'll try to annotate the video tomorrow, nap time for me!

Today we go on 3 mining missions, and a recon mission where we go ahead and take out the base since it'd take longer to walk back to the transport instead of having the mission automatically finish. Much fundraising is done and we acquire two Giants, a Reaper and another Shadow.
