jos
I've been trawling various X-COM forums and sites wondering if anyone is making a re-make of Apocalypse. I'm already pretty sure there aren't any major mods (though there are plenty of good tools courtesy of good people like J'ordos. So, my question is: does anyone know of a planned, or in progress Apocalypse remake? I ask because i absolutely love both Enemy Unknown and Apocalypse, but slightly prefer Apoc and would love to help see a remake of this game made. IMO it's a real gem - and left in the rough by even its developers....
Bomb Bloke
Basically it was rushed out of production. Such things tend to have more to do with the publishers (Microprose in this case) rather then the developers (Mythos). I personally haven't heard of a remake project for Apoc. jos
I personally haven't heard of a remake project for Apoc. Hmmm. Ok, thanks man. Anyone else? There must be something out there?I've played pretty much all the UFO remakes ... and am left dissapointed. Does anyone know of a 'not dead' Apocalypse/UFO hybrid remake in progress?? Zombie
I haven't heard of anything like this, and I've been searching for years now. I think the reason for this is the lack of people deciphering the game files, otherwise I'd suspect there would be more activity in this area. - Zombie
Azrael Strife
It'd be great to see an Apocalypse remake I've been pondering about developing one myself, XNA is a powerful tool that eases game development a lot, could help create one such game greatly! But I always have those projects around, maybe some day... maybe I haven't either seen anyone interested in such a remake, a shame.

jos
Hey, J'ordos!! Great to see you here again. With your technical skills anything's possible! I've dreamed of making an apocalypse remake for years now.My ideal XCOM game would be a hybrid of the original game andApocalypse. Essentially, i would like to use the framework andgame structure of Apocalypse and the 'cartoony', comic-book stylevisuals from the original game. I love Apocalypse as a game. For me it has: a) Depth of game mechanics - the way the gunfire, smoke and explosionswork IMO are intricate and very realistic.b) Detail - down to the individual peices of a soldiers armor beingworn down by absorbing continual punishment - now THAT's cool.c) Desctructible, gravity re-acting terrian. I haven't seen this in any modern decent strategy game - and we are talking about a gamethat was made for Windows 95!!d) A game system that makes the player pay for collateral damage caused. THAT is awesome. I love the dynamic of needing increasinglyheavy weaponry but having to pay for damage caused! I love Enemy Unknown (UFO Defense) because: a) The visuals. The comic book style animation and characters just brings the game to life! In contrast to Apocalypse's clunky charactersi adore the dynamic, hand-drawn characters.b) The atmosphere. The darkness - everyone who's played this gameknows about the darkness! creepy, scary, chrysalids coming at you out of the dark ... excellent!! Things i'd like to see improved: a) The morale system. I love the morale system in both games, butIMO in both games it was weak and could've been MUCH better. Iwould like to see it be more dynamic: with the morale of individualsoldiers fluctuating continuously during a mission - not just at the end when you've already lost 75% of your soldiers.b) Soldiers tougness. In the original game, soldiers died all over theplace. In apocalypse, they were maybe too tough. IMO a balancebetween the two would be ideal.c) Story. I think both games plot's could've used tightnening up.But i really liked Apocalypse's micronoid story. The idea of alienswithin aliens is a great concept - and could be developed further .... Does anyone have any ideas to add??
Azrael Strife
me ponders about the possibility of creating yet another x-com remake, but focusing on Apocalypse
Ki-tat Chung
It would be great, but I wonder if it would see itself to completion. Most remakes/adaptations I've seen die out half way through, and those are based on the original which has a much larger fanbase, as opposed to Apoc. Though I have to say, Apoc is a personal favourite, since it was the one that introduced me to the world of X-Com.
