The Witcher: Old World is a competitive adventure board game that thrusts players into a monster-infested realm teeming with arcane magic, dark secrets, and dangerous places to discover.

The Witcher: Old World sees 2 to 5 players travelling across a vast map, embarking on masterfully penned quests, encountering and making ambiguous moral choices, fighting monsters - and sometimes even brawling with other witchers to defend their school's honor!

The game lets players construct their own unique decks of cards by choosing from a wide range of abilities: attacks, dodges, and witcher combat magic - known as Signs. Through card synergy, players aim to achieve powerful combos as they utilize their witcher school's hallmark abilities to their full potential.

Monsters in the Dark: The Making of X-COM: UFO Defense

A book about the making of the original X-COM and creator Julian Gollop's early career in game design.

You'll walk alongside Julian during his boyhood, from spicing up the mechanics of chess and creating pen-and-paper games, to cutting his teeth on programming Sinclair's ZX Spectrum. From there, you will learn how Julian partnered with his father and brother to develop X-COM with MicroProse UK, an off-shoot team eager to prove themselves to U.S.-based parent company and Sid Meier's Civilization juggernaut developer MicroProse.

Monsters in the Dark's standard edition paperback contains the full story. The special edition paperback features a different cover that flows from front to back, and bonus interviews that go deeper into lateral topics of the game's development. You'll read about the making of the game's strategy guide, my full interview with soundtrack composer John Broomhall, and hear from a QA developer on the process of testing X-COM.

You'll also read a lengthy interview with Julian Gollop and MicroProse UK designer/producer Steve Hand about X-COM: Apocalypse, the third game in the series (the second game, Terror From the Deep, was made by an in-house team at MicroProse UK), and the many trials and tribulations faced during its development.

Monsters in the Dark's special edition is a Kickstarter exclusive - it will not be released outside of this campaign. It's only available in paperback, and will not be offered as a digital book.

dustbiters-deck-1277781.jpeg

Acclaimed game developers Robbie Fraser (Broforce, GORN, Genital Jousting), Jan Willem Nijman (Disc Room, MINIT, Nuclear Throne), and Terri Vellmann (SLUDGE LIFE, Disc Room, High Hell) in partnership with creative production wizards at iam8bit today reveal Dustbiters, a quick and furious card game about rival car gangs outrunning a giant dust storm.

Dustbiters is a two-player showdown that's light on rules, but deep in strategy, allowing infinite ways to creatively slip out of tough situations or destroy an opponent - or both! There's no math, dice or tokens to keep track of; every maneuver and act of sabotage unfolds through Dustbiters' hand-drawn deck of 21 different cars, bikes, and horses.

Drivers leverage abilities and effects unique to each ride, both to foil their rival and keep clear from a deadly storm wiping out the convoy's trailing member at the end of every turn. Balancing cautious, defensive maneuvers with reckless, risk-taking destruction is the fuel feeding Dustbiters' engine.

Ratten Reich is a grim and unforgiving world, where war has continued for many years. The war is fought between rats, mice, roaches and lizards alike. Slum like cities, burnt corpses, steam tanks, soldiers in imperial uniforms and armor.

This is the story we are trying to tell in an RTS game with interesting and unusual mechanics.

Yesterday I got my Monsters In the Dark: The Making of X-COM: UFO Defense books in the mail. I opted for the Special Edition Hardcover and corresponding bookmark and the Standard Edition Paperback and corresponding bookmark. The Special Edition Hardcover is signed by the author and so are both of the bookmarks. The paperback is unsigned. Took a couple pics for you guys to drool over:

I didn't read too much of it (Special Edition) yet, but I did read the interview with David Ellis. I mean, priorities, right? wink.png It was very good as there were bits of info in there I haven't heard about before. But the name of the book is The Making of X-COM: UFO Defense, not: Let's Talk About Your Time Working at MicroProse QA and Testing Different Games. Mr Ellis' primary contribution to that game was the strategy guide so that's what the interview should have focused on. Now, I could see branching off into the different guides Mr Ellis wrote for the X-COM universe as that's sorta related, or his time as the designer for Interceptor and Genesis. I'm probably being a little over critical so take this with a grain of salt but that's my take on it.

I also read the interview with the legendary John Broomhall which was well presented and focused more on X-COM which was good. It maybe could have dove a little deeper into the specifics or expanded some topics more. Otherwise very good. I'll withhold final judgement until I've finished reading the entire book. smile.png

Good to see you got the goods, Zombie. banana.gif

Don't be too harsh on Dave's input not being strictly "on the ball" so to speak as, after all, the Special Edition is sort of supposed to afford just that kind of leeway from extra content contributors. In a way we're lucky to have these kinds of tangents included as they end up more freely going into territories we might not otherwise think to ask about and still get interesting insights into how stuff got done those days.

Look forward to hearing more when you've gathered your thoughts on the whole thing. :)
