UFO: Afterlight patch 1.6 (fan-made, DVD check removed)
1C Publishing posted some good news for fans of UFO: Afterlight today:
QUOTE ALTAR Games is busy working on their next project and plan no further updates for UFO: Afterlight. They wish for the game to expand however, and have therefore given the source-code to a few dedicated fans. Petteri “PetteriB” Bamberg will maintain the UFO: Afterlight source-code in the time to come with help from Jason "Kret" Rodrigo and Stuart “Stucuk” Carey. As his first contribution to the community, Petteri has completed patch 1.6 for UFO: Afterlight. This patch includes lots of bug-fixes that fans of the game wished for, and removes the copy-protection! That’s right; developer ALTAR and publisher 1C Company has agreed to remove the DVD check from the retail version of the game! You can read more about the updates to the game in the official forum. You can read the rest and download the patch at the 1C Publishing EU site. Posted 22 April, 2008, 08:16 PM by Slaughter

UFO: Afterlight review at WorthPlaying
Not exactly news, but WorthPlaying posted a review of UFO: AL, giving it an impressive 9.0/10 score.
QUOTE Like every other title in the X-Com/UFO franchise, UFO: Afterlight possesses a high replayability factor. Although the story will always be basically the same, there are certainly some things you could do differently each time. Besides, the game is just plain fun and has a terrific timeless appeal to it. This is the sort of title you could play through once or twice right away (even though it might take you three months), and then reinstall it again a year, two years, even five years later, and still have just as much fun. UFO: Afterlight Patch installation fix

UFO: Afterlight Review at IGN
QUOTE Frequent readers of IGN know what a long shadow X-COM casts over the whole genre of squad-based, tactical alien invasion games. While games like Fallout, Silent Storm and Jagged Alliance have managed to offer up the squad-based, tactical part, it's taken a long time for developers to try their hand at the alien invasion part while also incorporating X-COM's base-building and overall strategy components. Fortunately, we're seeing more and more games following that model. Most aren't very good, but they're headed in the right direction. UFO Afterlight is just such a game. Building on the lessons learned in UFO Aftermath and UFO Aftershock, Afterlight (which is actually a real word) offers up the goods in terms of concept -- xenophobic alien hunts, futuristic research and manufacturing paths, base management, labor and resource allocation and pretty much anything else that the head of a self-sufficient, futuristic, alien-fighting force might enjoy. In this case however, too much repetition in the battles and a cumbersome base interface make Afterlight somehow less than the sum of all its parts. Link to the review QUOTE IGN Rating 7.5 Presentation It's a nice attempt to improve on the previous games. Campaign doesn't really have as much direction as we'd like. 8.0 Graphics Colorful designs might turn some gamers off, but we like the game's strong visual style. 5.0 Sound The weapon sounds aren't enough to bring battle to life. Music and voice acting are questionable. 7.0 Gameplay Tactical battles can be fun but they need more variety. There's lots of meat at the strategic level but it's hard to get at it. 8.0 Lasting Appeal There are presumably multiple ways to progress through the game but also lots of repetition no matter which approach you take. OVERALL (out of 10 / not an average) 7.4 Decent »
