I think I figured it out. Looking further back, it looks like I should have been able to research the Starghosts, but haven't found the topics yet. I've beaten them multiple times, but still no research. The forum topics that mentioned this have a link to a fix for this problem, but they link to a forum that won't work for me for some reason, not sure if they are down or not.

Sorry if this has been brought up before, but I'm having trouble finding the answers anywhere. I'm stuck in the game, and I'm including spoilers to show where I am. I've destroyed the Wargot ship, had some of my crew mutiny, helped out the crashed Reticulan ship, and keep getting attacked by the Starghosts where they destroy the territory when they conquer it. Supposedly there's a second Wargot ship, and I researched it and the crashed Reticulan ship. I have no more research projects and have let the game play for at least 10 days to see if something would happen, but nothing has besides multiple Starghost and Cultist attacks. What is supposed to happen next and when is it supposed to happen? Thanks for any help.
