  1. Hmmm, not sure I want to start messing with the BIOS yet. And I'm fairly sure I haven't changed the BIOS settings since I last ran it so I don't think that's the answer either. I haven't had any luck with fiddling with the config settings yet either although I'm convinced it's a graphics issue.
  2. Yep, no difference. I've tried setting Zonealarms to game mode and told AVG that the program is trusted but I don't think either of them are causing the problem. From the way it shuts down immediately I think the game is trying to initialise some graphics procedure which isn't working and so it throws it a fit. I think my next move will be to start using you config file to turn all the settings off one by one until I can find the one that's causing the problem. That's going to be a fairly drawn out process though.
  3. I disabled Zonealarms but I can't turn AVG off (even tried to kill the process but like Jason Vorhees it just keeps coming back). DirectX is up to date and working fine. I've tested some other games and Stalker runs fine, as does Freedom Force, Homeworld 2, X3 & Mount and Blade.
  4. Thanks for the config file FullAuto. I tried it but unfortunately it still isn't working. I think you're right about it being empty until you run the game though. The only way I could get mine to populate was by running the graphics tweaker I got here. The really infuriating thing is that even though I've got crappy onboard graphics I know the game can run. I've been through the archive page you linked but couldn't see anything that helped much. Pity the Nival forums are gone as I'm sure there must have been something similar there. I've also tried using 3D Analyze (although I can spell it better than the people who made it) but I wasn't really sure what would work (as my card should work with it) so I played about with a few of the settings but couldn't make a difference. I'm now trying to work out exactly what the new graphics drivers were supposed to have done so I can see if there's way to undo it using 3D Analyse (can't help myself correcting it any more, I've even renamed the shortcut) or the graphics tweaker.
  5. I don't know if it would work but right now I'm willing to try anything. Last night I was up until 2 hunting down old graphics card drivers and installing them over the newer ones but the oldest I could find was from before I bought my laptop and still didn't work. I'm starting to think this is never going to work. I don't know if it would work but right now I'm willing to try anything. 6. Jason Patric for Nails. He's was cracking in Rush and Narc. Not to mention Lost Boys.
  7. Just uninstalled/reinstalled and it was still blank. Patched to 1.2 and it's blank. Installed and ran the graphics tweaker mod and suddenly it's full of stuff. Didn't make the game run mind but I feel I'm a (small) step closer to getting there. From some research I think it may be because the newer drivers have enabled TnL support and this is causing problems. I've found a couple of threads on disabling it in the Registry but I'm loathe to start messing about with the Registry until I've exhausted all other options. Right now I'm trying to download and install an older driver.
  8. I just tried renaming them but it didn't make a difference. Oh, and I just noticed that my config file only has one line it about setvar cheat_allow_headshot which I don't think is normal. Surely there should be a lot of configuration options in there?
  9. Zombie: Thanks for the welcome, didn't mean to be rude earlier but I was at work and just wanted to hammer out a reply. I thought the dual cores may have been a problem (although it ran fine on them before) because I had problems with getting Deus Ex running so I tried CTRL-ALT-DEL to set the affinity manually. That didn't work but it did provide some interesting information. I had the the Task Manager open as the game launched and as soon as the little splash screen graphic thing dissapeared and the window holding the game opened the status changed to 'not responding'. Not sure how relevant that is though. Anyway, to get around the crash at startup I used WinLaunchXP to set the affinity prior to launching it but it didn't make a blind bit of difference. Thanks for the advice though. I've heard of some people having problems with newer graphics card drivers so I also tried to download one from before my last two updates (which is the nearest I can figure to when S2 was last working) but unfortunately all the drivers I could see on the Intel site earlier we too recent. I'm really stuck now so I've attached my DXDiag results (rather than clog the post with garbage) in the hope someone can make sense of them. DxDiag_11_12_09.txt
  10. OK, it's a Novatech laptop, 2x2Gig Intel Processor, 2 Gig ram, 312MB Intel 965 Express graphics (with latest drivers), DirectX 9.0c. Can't think of anything else you'll need to know right now.
  11. I've got a major problem with getting S2 to run and it's doing head in! I played the game about a year ago (but then got distracted by X3) and decided recently to re-install it and give another go because it's such an excellent game. Unfortunately, while I got the game to install OK and patched it up to 1.2 I've found that when I start the game I get the Nival logo and then it flicks to a black screen and just freezes. I've tried leaving it for half an hour or so and it has no effect and when I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL it's listed as not responding. I know running it is a bit of a sketchy prospect because I'm running it on my laptop under XP and Intel cards aren't supported but I had the game running before and it was perfect, not a single problem, so I can't understand why it's having trouble now. The only real difference is that I've updated my graphics drivers but logically this would reduce problems not increase them (I know it made X3 run better which is why I got distracted in the first place). I've tried rolling the drivers back but this has had no effect and I'm getting close to pulling my hair out! I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the game a couple of times but that hasn't had any effect. I've seen a few other people posting this exact problem on various sites but infuriatingly none of them seem to have received answers that solve the problem so I was wondering if anyone here could give me some advice. Oh, and I'm currently at work and so can't post my DXDiag results but I can do that later, although as it used to run fine I'm not sure how much help that would be. Logically it shouldn't be a hardware problem as that hasn't changed between the game running and now. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it as I don't know of any other way to get my WWII AP-system fix and that makes baby jeebus cry!
