  1. well, of course, if you mod the game to be more difficult... but it's not exactly the same game anymore, is it? It becomes Alien Assault Aftershock
  2. Ha! Thanks! This is what I was wondering about! So it seems they do have bonuses... although "hidden" ones that are not visible from within the game. So, I guess the females "are" snipers and scouts. (not that I don't use them for anything in my game anyway, the game isn't so hard as to need to emphasis each soldier's strenght - it's not even hard enough to require the use of training)
  3. So am I. Though things are only going to get worse. It's been said before, many times, that the game industry is now bigger than the movie industry. This means that the same business plans used for the movie industry is going to be used in the game industry (it's already being used - has been used for a while - but it will become more and more widespread) As numbers increase (game complexity, graphics, content, etc.) production costs grow. As production costs grow, less and less independant studios are able to come up and release a great game that strikes away from the mold and more and more "Suits" come in with their money and their idea of what a great-selling game is. You can see it all around. Games that are clones of each other, only with different names and a few extra tricks - it's the same as with the movie industry (Great, -another- sequel. Great, -another- horor movie. Great, -another- war movie, Great, -another- remake of an old movie.) Granted, there will -always- be small independant develloper to release great and/or innovative games but their production value will be less and the masses don't want that, they want to spend their money on the flashy big-named lots of WOW-graphics. That is the world of consoles. PCs have it a bit easier - it's easier to release games on the PC, you can get away with making games that look a bit outdated since not everyone has the latest hardware. In the end though, the industry is moving towards a cross-platform release plan. Release a game on Xbox/PSwhatever/Nintendo/PC - get the most money possible. And in the end, the niche markets are shooting themselves in the foot because we're -very- picky about our games, unlike the mass markets who just care about nice graphics and frantic gameplay. (consider the amount of garbage games that sell, on the ground of big hype and graphics, or in the case of certain games, big boobs *cough*doa*cough*) Still, the emergence of new game studios in countries you don't often hear of will give us a small requiem - the game industry in these countries is still young and foreign games don't have much of a foothold, since they rarely get translated, if even released, and the actual publishing of a game doesn't cost much, compared to the develloping. This has all been said before, I'm just re-stating it. Nothing intelligent about this =) One thing that's interesting, in regard to gaming, are cell phone games. They are a booming business for 2 reasons: 1- Cheap to make - so you can sell them for much less. 2- MASSIVE consumer pool. This results in cheap little games that cost maybe 500,000$ to make, to be released for download for maybe 3$, to a market of about a bajillion consumers (I have no idea what the real numbers are but just think about how many people you know that have a cell phone with a mini LCD screen.) Even if only 2-3% buy your game, that's 2-3% of a bajillion people. Let's just take a random number, say there's 50 million cellphone users in north america (which shouldn't be that far from reality) and 3% of these 50 million people buy the cheap game at 3$, that's 4.5 million$. For a cheap game that cost 500,000$ to make, you get a 4million$ profit, minus whatever distribution fees the publisher has to pay up. Well, that's just a side note, and I like typing random stuff anyway.
  4. Oh, not saying that there's anything wrong with not agreeing with this review (most people on these forums probably won't agree with most of that review anyway). Just saying that the most important part in a review is the review itself, not the score or the Pros/Cons summary... although many many people just don't care about all the funky hard-to-read words and will just look at the score and go "OMG this game got a 90% IT RAWKS" or "OMG this POS game got a 50% ! IT SUXORZ" Sadly... they don't teach people to think for temselves early enough at school. Kirby: I am -not- directing this at you, I'm just saying what kind of effect this Pcgamer review will have on the uneducated/stupid masses.
  5. Instead of trying to discredit the reviewer, just take this review for what it is - a review. Scores are opinions. What's important is how impartial the review itself was - if the reviewer explained the good and the bad. Trash that, not the score - many people won't like Aftershock and this reviewer just happened to be one of them. So what?
  6. They're hard? I never really had any -real- troubles with them. Sure, they shot me a grenade or two now and then, but never did they kill anyone. Because, unlike the cultists, they don't have any psionics to panic your guys, they don't have any snipers to kills you from farther than you can see, they don't have kamikaze cyborgs that throw a missile at point blank range. They have power armor and extremely innacurate plasma guns. Just load your guys with AP ammo and assault rifles, burst fire them from a distance, they'll fall and they won't even be able to get a hit on you (maybe one if they get lucky)
  7. Yeah, the ennemies are pretty stupid when it comes to that. Once they know where you are, they all come running, no matter if you're holed up in a little shack, they'll just line up and come in (just to get shot by the 4-5 guys waiting inside).
  8. Guys, guys. That's exactly where I -didn't- want to go. I don't want to discuss real-life men and women and whatnot (this will only lead to flames and burning) I'm talking about Game men and Game women soldiers - why is one weaker than the other? Do the women have an added bonus to make up for it? If not, if they're simply weaker, why do they even exists?
  9. Oh, I didn't mean to shoot them -through- the wall, I meant to -blow- a hole in the wall, to shoot them through it. I'm not sure you can shoot through walls (unless you made a hole first). Still, nothing like making a big hole and dropping a grenade in their back.
  10. To a certain point... I'll use whatever tactic works the best. If the game has poor AI that makes the soldiers come at you mindlessly, then so be it, I'll use that agaisnt them. Now you're right that it becomes boring after a while, so in effect, I tend to use the "Baiting" tactic when facing great challenges (such as the early cultist attacks where you have little equipment.) The rest of the time, I just run around, weapons set to burst, snap shot, and kill whatever I see. But then again, I'm not the patient type and I like my tactical battles to last less than 5 minutes, 10 if there are a lot of ennemies. I guess that sometimes, when I want to feel like an actual commander, I'll leap-frog my squaddies, order covering fire (which the ennemy is quick to ignore and just stands there firing back at me) and throw grenades (which take so long to throw the ennemy is far gone by the time it explodes). Mines are more fun - I just drop them around doorways and corners. Another fun tactic is to blow holes in walls to shoot at the people inside (only really doable once you get some scanners)
  11. If you wait long enough the starghosts will appear before the wargot mothership mission. As for flamers - I believe they come from ShadoWarrior's weapon mod.
  12. And there again... it's a computer game and there is no shortage of human ressource - just reload the diplomacy screen to get a new recruit roster. Again, it brings us back to the same question: If female have been made weaker fighters, why have them at all? Since you can A) Only recruit males and B) You can reload the diplomacy screen to get a new roster of possible recruit as often as you like. There is no shortage of male fighters. Why even have female fighters if all you're going to do is look at them? It's not about being politicaly correct, it's about have a game element make sense. At the current, it just doesn't make sense. Try to separate real life from game mechanics, people
  13. higher knowledge = more ressources from mines. As for the building that won't build: Make sure you select the lab/factory to build in the list then select a patch of land. There's a small bug where if you select a patch of land and THEN the building to be built, you won't have the build option highlighted. Other than that, like the other people said, make sure you have enough knowledge. Also make sure you have enough ressources.
  14. Octopus: without any mod, just use regular flechette ammo on them. For the tendrils, bring 2 or 3 troopers with a warp resonator (they're -made- for that, taking down buildings). One warp resonator shot kills a tendril. Aim lower, like Preda said, you need to hit the soft-looking part, not the part directly under the red marker. For the starghosts in general: There again, I simply let my guys use regular AP ammo (or even flechette ammo), using a XM8 assault rifle with all the bells and whistles (Accelerator, gyro-stabiliser, Movement-finder) set to Burst fire, snap shot. The only starghosts that ever got to me were Stars and even then, when your guys are decked in medium armor with a power shield, they barely take any damage at all. (Though, you have to remember to keep one or two plasma gun/shotgun/warp rifles when taking Starghost missions, to kill the annoying star ghost clouds - even a warp resonator if you want, usually takes 2 or 3 hits from that) To be frank, I've had more problems with the cultists and their darn snipers (quoting my oh-so-often sniped cyborg "Painnn") than with the starghosts. Btw, they're called Mermycols
  15. So this brings me back to my first question: do female soldiers have some other bonus which are not evident (maybe, better psionic resistence?) or are they just plain "weaker" than male soldiers? If so, why put females in the first place? Though it's true that men tend to be physicaly stronger than women, let's not forget that this is a game and that it's all directed by a very to-the-point philosophy (or should be). If Males are better soldiers than Females, why put females at all? I still think normal humans, male or female, should be equal. It makes no sense then to recruit female soldiers if they are just plain weaker. Before you all bear down on me, saying that real-life women can be as good soldiers as men, or that real-life women ARE physicaly weaker, I'll tell you this: YES, real-life women. This is a game. They should be equal. Don't talk to me about realism in a game about a post-apocalyptic alien invasion.
