  1. Bah this sucks. Looks like I'll have to just keep playing it through on CE then. So does that mean no matter how I play the DOS version I'll always have to play it on Beginner?
  2. So I was playing through a game in X-COM CE for windows, but now that I got DOSBOX working I have been playing the DOS version. I simply moved my saved game from CE to DOS and everything transferred. I was really happy. But, I just played for a month, and definitely noticed that the difficulty is WICKED easy now. I was playing on veteran, but now the aliens are just idiots. I first noticed it when I was checking out a landed abducter. Came around a corner with one of my guys, and there was a sectoid, right in front of him (complete with heavy plasma, I found out later). So he had just enough TUs to make a snapshot, and I decided to do it. HIT! But sectoid is still alive! So naturally I say to myself, "Well that was dumb. This guy is going to die." I had nothing else I could do that turn. Everyone else was too far away to lend a hand. And I didn't have any blaster bombs left to use. I was stuck. So I clicked on End Turn, and wouldn't you know it? The sectoid walks around the guy, looks around. And then stops. My turn starts, I shoot and kill it. Wouldn't have happened in my CE game. And mission after mission I realize the aliens are way too easy. Is there anyway I can change the difficulty midgame back to veteran? It just isn't fun to me when the aliens don't retaliate with full force... this is just a turkey shoot for me.
  3. My favorite tactic at night is to just have one person with an autocannon with two clips of incindiary, and a laser rifle in his backpack. I just did a supply ship mission when it was landed, so it had to be at night - I had no choice. So I simply equipped my captain with the autocannon, and he has a flying suit. I armor my men based on rank: Rookie - Personal Squaddie/Sergeant - Power Captain/Colonel/Commander - Flying This guy has something on the order of 70 something accuracy, pretty decent, and I just light up the ground from up above whereever I please. You can create daytime very very quick with this tactic.
  4. Wouldn't that be... 3 Avengers? 3*4=12? I mean, assuming they don't miss any shots.
  5. Haha, alright you're excused. How many did it take, curious? I have an Avenger armed with 2 launchers right now and 4 definitely doesnt down the battleship...
  6. Heh, yeah I didn't know about it until a while after I started playing. I don't think the original manual has anything about this. Also, do those avengers have 100 fusion balls in each launcher? CHEATS!
  7. Yeah that's crazy... I've never really noticed that. I've been playing through a game lately and I have been taking several precautions lately that seem to almost never get my guys killed. For example, I ALWAYS drop smoke's out the bottom of the assault craft, always seek aliens with HWPs and shoot them from afar where reaction can't take hold. I also have been equipping EVERY soldier with motion scanners. They weigh nothing (esp. for a seasoned soldier) and are cheap to use on the fly. Knowing small tricks like this, being able to illuminate the room better with a nade to the roof, could help a lot in the early part of the game when your rooks with rifles need an edge at night. Nicely done.
  8. How cool is it that Julian is an active part of the community now... This could be the dawn of a new era! That said by the man himself.

    Running Enemy Unknown

Yeah I figured it out. The version of the game that I had was faulty.

Well I got dosbox working ok I guess, but how the heck do I install this damn thing? It seems like DOSBOX will only let me run something but it cant actually go through the installation routine. What I have is an old copy of the install files, not an installed version of the game. It gets to the installation screen but then what it does is it says, http://home.comcast.net/~ashtonpierre/dosxcom.JPG No matter what I do, it will never let me go any further. What the heck!?!?

    Running Enemy Unknown

Awesome guys, thanks so much. I suppose I really should try and get it running... I'll post back with a success/failure story.

    X-com Reborn

I agree Vet, I know projects like Xenocide are the only REAL hope of a remake that we have. But you'll never take my dreams of the most ridiculous X-COM remake ever away from me!

    X-com Reborn

How unreal would it be though, if you could first hand execute interceptions? With new age graphics it would be amazing... imagine finally seeing a Fusion Ball smack right into the middle of that battleship, sectoids and equipment flying out of a gaping hole.... oh it would be so sweet. I vote for a totally redone UFO Defense. And it should be set in 1999 again :-D. I think it would be totally sweet for X-COM to be a really covert organization... it could be like the whole invasion already happened but it was all kept under wraps to the general public. Any news reporter on the scene of a terror site is quickly silenced...
  14. Let me first say that I started playing this game as X-COM: UFO Defense. But this version is next to impossible to find these days, the only version I have of it are the original floppies and I believe the PSX version is UFO Defense as well. It's not a big deal, I know it's the same game, but I wish I had my American version. Regardless, I have been playing the patched version of EU on Windows XP. Runs pretty good, but the only issues I have are: *Scroll speed is off the hook. *The BEEP sounds of clicking buttons on the geoscape is deafening. Is there any easy way to fix this? I'm really sorry, but I tried using DOSBOX and that thing is confusing as all hell. I've searched and searched for walkthroughs on how to get it running, and it's just a pain in the ***. Anyone have quick fixes to this issues?

Hmm, this is very interesting. Although I do know what you all mean about "this is the hundredth thread like this in the past few years." Are we thinking remake? Or sequel? I'm telling you, a sequel will not do well. Enough effing sequels have been done, each one worse then the last. REMAKE BABY!
