  1. I wouldnt advise starting a new game with the alien assault 2 mod... its nasty. Do try if you want an experience that is about 5 times harder than starting on super-heroic... I dont know if it is because of the patch or not as I installed the mod and used it in an existing game before. This was the first time I had started a game with the mod installed. 20 enemies on the first mission on veteran or super hero (difficulty seemed the same) was tough. If you are unlucky enough to fight mutants instead of grey-mans on your first mission and even make it out alive, you sure wont have much ammo for the next one. And forget that knife. You wont even make it in range to use it. I tried and tried and could never get past my fourth tactical mission without being whiped out. The numbers in the first mission are tough enough, but the difficulty seemed to increase very quickly. It felt like I was fighting mutants that my troops would encounter at levels 7-9. You know, the missions where some of the muckstars and flatsters start to develop superman speed and power. Interestingly enough, after resigning myself to moving the mod file so I could start the game without being obliterated, The game remained the same: Each mission still had tons of supermutant monsters steamrolling over my poor chaps. Starting a new game after moving the files worked fine, I had normal numbers and difficulty (actually, difficulty in general seems upped after patch) but I found it odd that the game (profile) I had started with mod after patch retained the characteristics of the mod after removing the file.
  2. Stumbled across a weapon I had never seen before last night and just got to wondering what else is in the game but not, if you get what I mean. I figure those of you who know what you are doing and have the tools to browse through the game files (why cant game developers just be nice and make their file archives compatable with something like win-rar rather than requiring a seperate browser for each game's particular file format?) might have seen some other stuff that's in the files but not incorporated in the game. The lead pipe does less damage than the knife and if you remove it from the level 2 human you recruited whom it came with then it is gone forever (does not go to armory inventory), but the oddity of it made it particularily satisfiying to smash aliens with ...okay... so the alien was already unconcious, but it was still cool! Katana eat your heart out! There are little things here and there that make me suspect that there are other goodies that were never incorporated. Example: when you research firearms, it tells you you can research pistol blueprints, however, the pistol blueprint research must have been removed, probably because there is only one conventional pistol, but it sounds as if there was at one time or was planned to be more. Just curious if any modders or others who have looked in the game files have found other neat little things that were completed but not incorporated.
  3. This is not entirely true. After winning help missions and killing all the locals, the mission is failed. I have tried this once and failed the mission after I killed the last one.
  4. After much trouble and hassle, I am able to play again and I discovered a saddening thing. You cannot initiate hostile missions against the psionics
  5. I was unable to test and see if the abort exploit happened again because I can no longer play (Grrr) but I suspected it did indeed happen evertime...
  6. The easy solution to the number of names would be to randomly generate first and last names seperetly, although it may lead to some rather interesting name combinations, heh heh. The limited number of portraits works fine if you only have one core squad that you use, but I like to keep a small army on hand I dont expect a fully-fleshed out unique personality and portrait for "each" character (assuming there would be a set number) but some more variety couldnt hurt any. Of course this is something I never expect to be considered by ALTER. It is just too insignificant for their time. And thats what the mod community is for *hint-hint*wink-wink*
  7. Yes, I would definitely like a little extra reward for the aliens( or people) that I kill rather than just a base amount for mission complete. It shouldnt be too hard to add in even with a different amount for different monster types. Depending on how they generate their missions, It may be rather easy to factor in the monster's difficulty too. While I can not confirm this as I cant play the game right now, last time I was playing, I did a mission to capture a province with the alien resource and the map was a big spaceship. I didnt feel like playing that map, so I instantly aborted, but I got a little over 100 exp for instantly aborting. I dont know if that was the full amount of the mission complete or not, but it was close if it wasnt and that was for INSTANTLY aborting. I think the experience gain equations need a second look.
  8. Well, from what I can tell from where I was in the game until mine went kaput, the way the character recruitment thing works is: There are I think 6 male and 6 female portraits. Each portrait has a set number of statistics that are the same. What I mean is that every time that picture comes up in the recruit screen, that character has the same stats. Then names are just randomly assigned. I am not sure, but I think that as they go up in level, their stats improve but still stay the same for each portrait. I definitely agree that there need to be more portraits available. All my troops were humans, so overlap became a problem. It just didnt look right you know.
  9. I know in the demo, which time never advanced, whether you fought in night or daytime was completly random. I have not tested it much or payed much attention, but I imagine it to be the same within the full game.
  10. Ah, it is most definitely an extremely fun game. I wasnt exactly meaning to bash the story or anything, I was just feeling like being an evil bastard and smiting all the mutants I really must say, I found it to be much more enjoyable when I started forcefully taking territories rather than butt-kissing my way through the game. I only wish they could fight back! That would really be great. Maybe I wouldnt be so mean to them then...

    Bug report

    All my soldiers voices change randomly each time I load the game, either from tactical or global views. If you switch squads (like from squad A to E), a cyborg puts his implants back into inventory. It was my understanding that a permanent installation would be consitant throughout all squads...
  12. Well, last night I was playing and the game froze up. I couldnt ctrl-alt-delete out, I couldnt alt-tab, I couldnt do anything, my whole computer was froze up solid. After turning it off and rebooting, I got an error when trying to run the game: ver: UFO: Aftershock 1.0.3 file: C:\workdir\libglview\core\BasicOglWnd.cpp line 379 no suitable pixel format found. I tried running in safe mode, I tried restarting, I tried re-installing, I tried running in safe mode again, etc... Nothing has helped. Additionally, when I try to run the game, it leaves my computer in its resolution and color mode and when I try to run another program the display is very messed up. Pushing ctrl-alt-delete and going to task manager eleminates the display problems and resets them back to what they were before trying to run AS. What is going on here!!? Thank you in advance. Edit: Tried system restore, no dice. Tried to reinstall video card drivers, but i get an access is denied error anytime I try to do anything with an ATI setup program. Please dont tell me this is StarForce...
  13. It has actually not been much of a problem for me. True, when fighting in tight interiors, it can become frustrating, but generally, it has not disrupted the effectivness of my guys. There are the rare occasions when an enemy approaches from the 'right' angle that several of my men cant shoot at him, but it has never cost me any lives.
  14. Well, I really do love the game, It is very entertaining, but the storyline was a little lacking for me... It just didnt have the gritty, dirty, rated M for mature kind of feel I was looking for... (Old fallout and fallout tactics fan here). So, I decided to darken things up with the only thing I had control over: Myself I created a new profile on the hardest (super hero) difficulty level and named it General Barnaky. I set a goal to rid the earth of ALL mutations and preserve the purity of humanity... I know... I am evil. So, first mission in the game, I help the humans and get the base. Next I take the Berlin province above me for some resources and build 2 factories and 3 research labs. Then I attack the Cyborg base in France... Yes, I ATTACK it with 4 level 1 characters... lol What an intense battle! Its the map that looks like a powerplant with the big red piece of machinery inside the building. I land my capsule on some railroad tracks near the large building, thinking that the cyborgs are probably near the building as most take-by-force missions place your enemies in the buildings on the map. I almost instantly find myself in contact with the cyborgs. Seriously, my troops were hudled up prone about 4 or 5 tiles away from the landing capsule for pretty much the whole mission. I was quickly assaulted from three directions. 3 cyborgs with SPAS-15s approached from the North, 2 with SPAS-15s from the South, and 3 cyborgs approached from the East, 2 with SPAS-15s and one with an M60E3! Like I said, very intense battle! Everyone was constantly redirecting fire as one was knocked down only to switch back again when he got back up a few seconds later. Amazingly, I managed to knock all the shotgun-toting cyborgs unconcious as they approached and then I proceeded to hunt that machinegunner down!! I WANTED that MG! Unfortunetly, he ran away for a while, then when I thought I was gonna get him conered, he exited the map That was the first time I had ever seen an enemy actually exit the map, so no MG for me. Well, at first, simply a look at the screen as my troops frantically fought off these approaching cyborgs was reward enough, but after the mission was over and the debrief screen came up showing a grand total of 104 experience points gained, I was a little disapointed. It would be nice if there was SOME kind of reward for fighting tougher missions versus easy ones. Especially since I will find myself fighting more and more take-by-force missions as I go. On the plus side, I did 7 SPAS-15s (though I use the SPAS-12, the SPAS-15 is junk) and enough shotgun shells to last me for quite a long time.
