  1. ...so I started afresh, kicked ass at the Russian Area 51 (only one fatality), and came to this mission with two of my best guys in heavy armour, one collapsable railgun, one collapsable machine gun and two cannon-fodder for scouting. Car-crabs lasted less than a second - it was hilarious. We won the mission by default. None of the bugs survived - apart from the ones we came to rescue, of course. Not that this game doesn't have its problems - the Biomass is spreading into my territory, and I have no defences so far. I have a Biomass sample being researched, so there is still hope... ...ooops, there goes London.
  2. Looks very much like I'm going to have to start afresh. I don't seem to have half the equipment mentioned - my first try at this particular game, however, and my first attempt at UFO Enemy Unknown was pretty disasterous, as far as I remember...
  3. Okay, I managed to do the Russian Area 51, but it wasn't pretty... My team survived the start, dealing with two Rets outside whilst my grenade specialist and my runner moved up to the wall. The FIRST grenade that was throw over the wall knocked it down, revealing two Rets just on the other side. Grenader runs for cover, whilst the runner lays down covering fire... ...but as the smoke clears, I see there's not two, but SIX bad guys, who cut Runner and Grenader to pieces. I call down my equivalent of a tactical nuclear strike from the rest of my team, and the bugs go down. The team creep to the shelter of a nearby truck, and finding there's no more immediate opposition, they run for the entrance to the underground part of the base, and descend... Selecting a new runner, my crew started to advance, with one relatively raw recruit as cannon fodder, armed with a flame thrower. CF took down the first bug that was spotted - the shen got mind controlled, killing the new runner and herself. The remainder of the team advanced to that same room, but there was only one team member left by the time that the room was cleared. "Ribbit" - a French launcher / sniper specialist, then had to run like crazy to the computer, and got back without taking another shot. Success, but at a heavy cost (lost some good people in the process). That was quite an achievement, and something of a confidence booster - right up until the "Rescue The Greys" mission... Now that makes the Russian Area 51 look like a walk in the park...

Glad to hear that - I've tried the Russian Area 51 twice, with 100% fatalities and subsequent reloads each time, and if I have the opportunity to develop better armour, weapons and squad members before I HAVE to go in, then that's good news. Now, someone had me that crate of grenades... ...I'm not beaten yet.
  5. Hmmm... I just started playing this game a couple of days ago, and I've been doing research like crazy, but I don't seem to have half the gear mentioned here so far. This is only my first try at the game, though, and I intend to try out every tactic listed here until those Russian bugs are history...
