  1. "unable to authenticate original disc within time limit" this is what i get when i try to run this game. and before the mods and any other starts screaming about me 'buying the original' i should point out i actually did buy this game when it was first released. i installed the patches, 1.1 to 1.3, in the correct order. the cd is not being recognised. why? is it safedisc? can anyone help me out here? i tried using a no cd exe but even tho it said it was 1.3 in the attached readme it said 1.2. which explains why it crashed the game. i would like to play this game again. on my older system it worked fine. a geforce 4 Ti4200, athlon 1800XP, 512mb pc2100 ddr ram and winXP Pro. my new system is Radeon 9800Pro, athlon 3200XP, 2x sticks 512mb ddr running at dual ddr pc3200 ram and winXP Pro. Dx9.0c. das
  2. i cannot get the game to run. i DO have an original copy. i have played it before [for a few weeks when it was first released]. my hdd went tits up and i lost my savegames. so, i am looking forward to starting again [at least this time i'm ready for the biomass that caught me unawares last time!] i installed patch 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3. the grfx and sound tests all worked fine. but the game won't start and reports that time allowed for reading cd has run out [or something like that]. cd seems busy but then stops with that report. i used a 1.3 nocd exe but it crashed the game, but at least it did run the game for a short time and the grfx ran very slowly and choppy.

what grfx card do u use? i have an ATI 9800 pro and it runs so choppy i cannot believe it. 1gb of ram running at dual ddr, 3200athlonXP and dx9.0c is the rest of my system. das
  4. hey, i got a black guy in my team. he started at 4th level with good handgun, cap, rifle and psi stats. also, an indian woman and what looks like an arabian guy. also, i just found out i' playing at the default level...which is HARD! no wonder i've been struggling! i tried resetting it but there were no options in-game. das
  5. i will say this: anti virus has ruined several of my games and i've had to reinstall them. i now only do virus scans manually and updates too cos AV progs really do bugger up game installs. and, as i found out recently, the AV i use is only the controlinterface and it buggered up my installation of nvidia ref drivers. so, AV progs really do make a mess of game installs. my advice? only use them manually. they install all kinds of stuff so make sure they are not interfering with your startup options, cos , as i said, they mucked up my nvidia driver install. i have never had a problem with games, and i have a huge amount of them, until i installed AV software. obviously, AV wares are important but try and keep to manual use of them . anything automated can do a number of things to slowdown your system or bugger up installations. das
  6. i find that if i give 2 of my best rifle shooters sniper rifles and keep them kneeling they can often pound away at extreme range before the enemy can even fire back. also, i have noticed that whenever i have a group close together those that are standing will draw fire, as if the enemy is choosing to shoot at standing targets cos he gets a better chance of hitting them. i often get a guy with good dodge and armour to stand so that he draws fire as he doesn't take as much damage if he IS hit. i am relatively early into this game so maybe i am partially wrong but certainly guys that are standing DO draw enemy fire. also, kneeling at a corner means there is even less of a target for the enemy to shoot at while your guy leans and shoots around that corner. but, as i said, it's early days yet. but i haven't lost a guy yet. and have only suffered 4 hospital visits and now occupy whole of north america, caribbean and am about to take a base in UK. gawd i lurve this game! pity we can't go prone tho. that's a real shame! das :alien2:
  7. wh-wha-wh-what? no entering buildings? but we won't be able to ambush aliens without cover like that. i would've thought it would be easy to map buildings.. or at least, bombed out, hollow architectures. i guess w/o building interiors the maps will be a fair size.. i mean.. they'd have to be, wouldn't they? unless this is just a case of laziness and/or zero commitment to make a worthwhile game. we've all seen this sort of thing before. a huge amount of ppl have wanted to see class games in the style of the old XCom titles... i'm getting a bit suspicious about this. a similar thing happened with MOO3. the writers/devs just cashed in on the previous titles' fame [but i do believe they attempted to make something new for the MOO series, instead , they mucked it up and couldn't be bothered writing patches for it after the mess they made... oh boy! what a mess!]. and, even tho i realise this is not an XCom title, it's obvious that those games have had an enormous influence on, certainly, the LOOK of this game and the story background and XCom fans are the ones, like myself, who really want to play this game. i just hope this is not another muckup/cash in. maybe i should wait for the demo? i could've saved myself money - and disappointment - by doing that with MOO3 , red faction2 [horrible horrible rip off] and project IGI2 [utter cack] as well as others. if not wait for a demo then borrow it because i will NOT be risking throwing money after poorly written games that are in fact only worth about one third the asking price. but i truly do hope that I AM WRONG. I REALLY DO. please let UFO:aftermath be a good one. <mmm.. i wonder if the old XCom games will work ok on my pc? i tried UFO:EU but it ran so fast i could not possibly play the strategy part of the game - the earth span so fast that it was impossible!> living in hope, das
  8. hi, the main link doesn't work but the alternative one does. i was getting 70k sec which is fast for my connection [600k]. but i was disappointed with the movie. there's just a small amount of what is not much more than animated screenshots, if you forgive the term and the gameplay of UFO:AM was shown for just a few seconds and was nothing much to see. i realise this video is meant to be about the celebration of finding a publisher and the development of Altar, but did we really need to see so many logo screens? it's like it was used to just fill in space... i watched the vid twice trying to get a look at anything like something to do with UFO:AM, as i'm really really REALLY looking forward to this game, but this video was...well... sorry to say this, but, lame. but whatever. altar wanna get themselves on the map. that's cool. if UFO:AM comes anywhere near the immensity and depth of any of the XCOM series, then it will be a winner. personally, i've been looking forward to this game since i found out about it a long time ago. but next time they do a video, i hope it actually shows us the game's gameplay in a lot more detail. can't wait for the game! thanks das
  9. the 'we-go' turn based system of play [as opposed to the 'i-go, you-go' turn] does actually work in multiplayer and, probably, works far better than the old 'i-go,you-go' that everyone's used to. there's a WW2 game that uses this system called 'Combat Mission:Beyond Overlord' that makes good use of it as , think about it... in the usual turn based games you have to wait for the other guy to finish his turn, then take yours... but in this new system you both take your turn together. it does work better, i find, as you are responding to your opponent's move but also, trying to predict him, which does take a lot of tactical thinking. but, as usual, it's all about 'horses for courses'. some ppl may like it, some may not. cheers das
  10. a character generation system, at least, at the start for your initial team would be a great idea. but perhaps it would take too long if you had to create 2 teams of 12. but if there was only 6 or so then choosing skills, abilities would be an interesting way of showing you what skills are needed to survive... or maybe not. i do believe that there should be at least 3 or 4 core characters.. the type that players will reload a game for when they die. i always felt XCom:Enemy Unknown would've been great with something like this... and, because they are skilled[maybe, like officer types?] then they give a bonus to squad members nearby. i mean, by the look of this game, it is tactical so why not introduce some tactical tools for the player to use? and, maybe, as these chars types become better trained/skilled in the field, you have to make a choice for them... do they continue in the field[fighting] or do they help toward 'training' the green/beginner characters. this could be the player's choice. if they choose for the character to 'train' then the allotted troops being traind advance in experience more quickly as they learn from his experience. on the other hand, if he is used in the field [fighting] then the benefits are obvious as his skills will be used to take on the alien menace. perhaps some troop types eventually go into research? but, tbph, i think i will be happy with whatever is done. i so enjoyed XCom:enemy unknown and Xcom:terror from the deep that i don't see how they can fail... XCom:Apocalypse promised so much but, for some crazy reason, the graphics actually got worse than the other 2 earlier games [the best 'graphically' has to be the first game XCom:EU as they were a kind of 'cartoon' style which worked as there really wasn't a gr/card at the time that could handle anything more than cartoon style graphics]. good luck!
