  1. Do not know if what you are experiencing is something different, but: When you are holding down one (or more than one) of the rotation keys and a messege suddenly pops up (new mission, squad trained/healed, base/items captured, etc...), after you close the messege, the game thinks you are still pressing the rotation keys (thus you get the infinite rotation towards north, south, east, west, etc...). The solution is simple: press those rotation keys for a few seconds and release them. This solves the problem of infinite rotation. Your bug sounds like something else though...
  2. There are two families of aliens: The Reticulans: The true aliens, the prime movers and the real trouble makers. You encounter them on UFOs and alien bases (or when they attack your bases). The Transgenants: The mutated remains of the earth creatures that got affected by the downfall. They are genetically butchered towards some unknown end. You encounter them in almost all missions (except the missions that belong to Reticulans). As far as the types of each families, well... The Reticulans come in three different flavours in terms of armor (and armor vaguely means rank). All of them look the same, but they have shields of varying color around them. The colors signify power/rank. Yellow shield is the Sun Armor, it is stronger against earth weapons and weaker against alien weapons (this is really general information, there are lots of weapon types). The white/blue shield is the Sky Armor, this armor is stronger against alien weapons and weaker against human weapons. The last shield type is green, the highest rank among them, the Bio Armor. The Bio Armor gives good protection against all damage types as well as psionics. Reticulans carry a variety of alien weapons, and ultimately, their weapons classify their threat rather than their armor type. I won't go into weapons here because it's better for you to find out yourself. The transgenants are really wierd creatures, some of them can carry human/alien weapons, some of them use their own natural "weapons" for offense while some do not attack at all. Let me tell you about them in general: -The humanoid transgenants: These transgenants, while mutated, keep some of their humanoid forms. The important thing about them is that they can carry weapons, so they can use human/alien weapons. If they have no weapons, they can still claw/punch in melee. They are not exactly resistant to anything since they are much like humans. -Kamikaze transgenants: These transgenants have different types, but their attack is mostly the same: they get close to you and blow up, doing splash dmg. They are mostly resistant to alien weapons. -Weapon platforms: Some transgenants move slow or do not move at all, and use acid/psionics and sometimes other wierd types of weapons against you. The main thing is that you can't carry them around (they are too big) and they are usually dangerous. They have fast attack speed and sometimes their damage is splash. They are mostly weak against fire and explosions.
  3. Have you tried everything to do it in a legit way? I had trouble with my biomass for quite some time too. The thing is, no matter how many planters you recover, you won't get the research if you have not observed the biomass. BTW: There are many types of missions you can get on the biomass, and only one of them triggers the research. You can get: -Attack the biomass, the usual elimination mission but with biomass environment. -Observe biomass aliens, the usual "spot X number of enemies and return". -Attack biomass node, an elimination mission that you can only get after you research biomass -Observe the biomass, THE MISSION FOR RESEARCH, an elimination mission again, but the briefing clearly states that you are conducting this to observe the biomass.
  4. I learned that the hard way Apparently, I can't finish by clearing the earth, since the northern edge of South America can't be cleaned by repulsors (the biomass has grown into the ocean, and it's out of range) Also, south pole is a mess. The biomass from South America had crept there, then a biomass node got planted on the south pole and the two merged together. Even after I destroyed the biomass node later (and cut off the biomass from South America), the biomass grew on its usual pace.
  5. Hmmm. I captured the last base on earth, Pearl Harbor, completing the 60 base objective (tehre are no more than 60 right?), but the game didn't end. I wonder, do I have to clear all the biomass too?
  6. In which case 60 bases equal victory? I control 59 right now (just completed the recover the puzzle box like thingy that stands for spaceship mission) and the last one is the Pearl Harbor base. I am trying to complete a capture transgenant mission there to gain impact points (the hardest mission is capture now, I almost always end up killing one square aliens)
  7. A few more (real time) hours of playing, and I got the special "observe biomass creatures" mission. It really surprised me that I actually got to progress with the game, I thought I was doomed for certain. I did a few missions on the biomass (capture UFOs and cases) and none of them had the unique biomass mission carpet. The special mission showed up when I had the biomass creeping towards my North America bases (it actually took away two of them). But I may have discovered a trigger through this experience: maybe there is a base counter for the Retribution mission as well? I had almost all of the globe covered by the time the retribution mission appeared (I was only missing half of North America and all of South America), so maybe I had too many bases and the mission showed up? BTW, how many bases do you need to get the alternate ending (the one that says you cleared the globe of all aliens)? I am aiming for that since I have cleared most of it anyway.
  8. My advice is to leave the director's cut off even if it is not causing the problem. It surely creates some speed problems with me (especially after a long time of playing, because of low RAM I guess) and there's really nothing special about it (if it showed you the alien's death animations, it would be cool).
  9. I have installed the game, applied the 1.3 patch and started this game, so if there's some bug, I don't think its about the patch. I had started this game on Europe and biomass started on South America (they have something against South America don't they?). After getting all of Europe, Asia and half of Africa under my control, I took the north and south poles. By that time I had finished area 51, soviet base, rescue old greys, and almost all research (except anything that requires bio mass). I have downed and recovered many planters by the way. Now, at that point of the game, the biomass had covered all of South America (I had no missions appearing there, and you can't suddenly expand on the other side of the globe can you?). It was making its slow progress toward North America and South pole (still far away from the base though). I completed a "capture base from transgenants" mission in South America, thinking I would get to observe the biomass, but I instantly lost the base and did not get the research. Apparently you require a special type of mission to see the biomass. So I made my usual progress towards North America, thinking I would eventually get the mission for biomass and deal with it in my own pace. I captured three bases by doing a single mission at one point, which gave me the north half of North America. I would normally not be worried about things right about now, but I got a mission that appeared in the middle of Pacific that has something about a spaceship called Retribution. Now, I think this is the mission that eventually gets you the ticket to the moon, but the thing is, I haven't researched the queen yet (it's on my "not ready for research" list, because of biomass). Have I reached a point of "oh my god I'm screwed", or is my biomass mission really TAKING ITS TIME to appear?
  10. Enter options and disable the thing that's called "Director's cut". Maybe this will help (director's cut is the thingy that makes the camera go down and circle around the enemy when you spot it, fun in the beginning, annoying later)
  11. OK, the first real shot I took at the Soviet base, I did it (but I had visited it once before in another -failed- game, had a picture of what I would have to face, so it's really not the first try actually). I tackled the Area 51 and the Soviet base as soon as they appeared (my game is on easy BTW, so probably why I had an easy time of it). I had completed construction of 4 sun armours by then, and I had 4 steyr augs (sp, sorry), with 30-40 clips, so I picked out my strongest 4 guys (all guys BTW), lvls: 12 / 12 / 9 / 9. Loaded them up with their rifles, extra clips, dual medi kits, triple grenades. They ended up having excellent speed except for one who had to drop down to very good speed. I started the mission, an alien appeared right next to me (laser pistol/gun), quickly dispatched with aimed fire (burst would have done it, but didn't bother). I walked towards the gate of the base, two aliens came up, one had a standar rifle, the other had what sounded like a laser minigun (I thuoght it was firing über fast). I killed the one with the minigun quickly (I had never seen that weapon before, so I didn't want it to fire a second time) then downed the one with the rifle. Ran two more steps, saw a missle looming towards me, so I fired up my afterburners to spot the alien (the missle landed behind my soldiers). I saw the alien, took aim, and killed him before he could reload (after this point, I saved, got up from my chair and starting dancing and shouting "wohoooooo" since I had killed the first rocket guy without a scratch). I realised I had cleared the courtyard and was ready to check who/what was behind the gates/walls. I lined up my men near the wall close to the gate, healed the wounded, switched to burst fire, picked one of my men, and ran (like a chicken with its head cut off ofcourse) parallel to the gate without stopping. No missles loomed toward me, so I thought I could take a peek inside. I had the same guy enter through the gate, immidiately to his left along the wall there were three aliens, directly in front of him there were two others. I turned back, screaming "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK" at the top of my lungs as two missles loomed their way towards me and I heard more of that annoying minigun laser fire. I positioned this "take a peek" guy to the other side of the gate, and I waited the aliens out. Didn't have to wait that long, they started coming out right away. The first two got downed before they could turn to face me, but the third rocket one (why did it have to be the rocket one) launched a missle a split second AFTER his body dropped to the ground (it may have been another alien on the other side of the gate that I couldn't see, though I doubt it). Cursing my luck, I ran my three soldiers away from the wall and saved one of them from the blast (the other two got out after the blast, so no dmg was taken from the burning after the rocket hit). This proved disastrous, as the rest of the aliens poured out of the gate and the only one capable of fighting was the "take a peek" guy and the one that had escaped the rocket blast. Still, they were able to kill the first alien that got through the gate. The second one out managed to launch a missle towards my wounded soldiers, who ran (yeah you guessed it, like chickens with their heads cut off). I downed the missle launcher by running up to him with the two healthy guys, healed the two injured ones, took a save, a deep breath, and entered through the gates. Inside the gates I met another alien that had one of those laser miniguns but was no match for my squad of four. I easily/merrily made it to the enterance to the second level. In the second level, I checked all my soldiers that they were on burst fire and started running through the rooms. I found a rocket launcher that was patrolling one of them and had his back to me. I blew his @ss off and ran to the corridor adjacent to the big file room. In the corridor, I met another laser minigun alien, took him out by aimed shot (too far for effective burst shot). In the file room, I met two psi using aliens (one by one). They both took control of one of my guys, but I killed them in the next second, so no hard feelings. I met another laser minigun alien before I got to the files, killed it easily (apparently the laser minigun is less effective than its sound) and picked up the files and ran back LIKE A CHICKEN WITH ITS HEAD CUT OFF Things that helped: -The fact that my soldiers were moving so fast. It is not only out running (or running away from) the missles, it's also the fact that it helped me heal injured soldiers quickly in combat and put them back in action. -Good guns. Four steyr augs (sp, sorry) could kill a reticulan in 1-2 turns in aimed mode. In burst mode, it takes one turn. -Controlling the soldiers one by one instead of my usual "all do something together" fashion. My general way of handing missions was "run, spot, focus fire", this time I had to keep juggling the soldiers around and pull back injured ones and quickly heal them and return them, etc...
  12. Hmmm. I haven't had access to those weapons you have mentioned (I have just completed soviet base story mission) so heavy armour is pretty much "slow useless piece of crap" for me right now
  13. Basically, anything that's larger than one square, you can't carry. If you are doing a capture mission, and you can't find one square transwhatevers (sometimes you just DON'T have them, the whole mission is filled with large ones), you need to knock out at least one transwhatever and eliminate the remaining on the map (this is why later I ignore capture missions).
  14. Thx I completed the mission by going back to my save before entering the UFO (I have two tactical save slots, thanks to my long experience in Daggerfall, the most bugged game of all history) and entered the UFO again. This time, I had to kill only two to finish the mission (BAH!) For now I try not to test my patience too much, so I play very slow (mostly a game is finished after a week of playing (or two), but I'm taking it VERY slow with aftermath). I try to avoid alien base missions (actually found a tactic -for delegate- that allows you to capture them without doing the base mission). BTW: I never wear heavy armour, so the problem is a pathfinding (or pathexisting) one, I did a search in the forums, looks like the bug is widely known. Heavy armour sux IMHO, I prefer killing my enemy faster (so I don't get so many shots) to standing there taking the damage.
  15. Back to the original topic (though the bombs discussion seems to be doing fine), I have experienced this "endless rotation" bug in geoscape as well. The thing is, if you are using one of the "rotation" keys, and while you keep your finger pressed on it, a messege comes up (like our soldiers returned to base or mission appeared), when you close the messege, the globe continues rotating. I have found that if you let go of the rotation key and press it again, when you release it, the rotation should stop. I did not experience this in tactical missions, since I rarely use rotation there (and you don't have messeges popping up in them).
