COLONIZATION! The game where you take over the New World! It's basically Sid Meier's red headed step child and a reimagining of the original Civilization game.

We're pansies and this is a pretty new game to us so we're playing this on Easiet.

 

 

There are 4 of the European powers that are represented here. Why they left out Portugal is beyond me..

First up are the English. They have that whole Puritan thing going on now and folks want to leave for American. They get an immigration bonus that puts one people on the docks back in London ready to go free of charge.

Secondly, there's the French. Instead of having a bonus back at home, they get one in the new world: The natives actually like them and they are less prone to be fighting and more likely to be trading.

On the other hand...the Spanish will have nothing of that and are out to conquer the New World by force. They get bonuses to combat and possibly more loot from sacking the native settlements.

Lastly, we have the Dutch. A new nation that has seceded from Spain. They are traders and always get the best deals on trade between the New World and Europe.

...What's the actual difference between the French's bonus and the Dutch's bonus? o.O

 

French have a bonus with the natives making them more likely to give better trades and less likely to go to war. Dutch have a European economic bonus that lets them buy lower and sell higher for longer than the others. They also get a ship with 4 spaces instead of the usual 2

We go through all the options starting up, choosing Netherlands. Since Tigger didn't want to type in the name of the hippie Dutchman, we go with the default.

The Dutch: A nation of traders. The markets back home in Europe are more stable for us than they would be for the other nations. High selling prices and low buying prices tend to stay that way, leading to us making a larger profit. This is good, because the natives really only want to pay well for trade goods and useless beads.

Yes, we have a ship that we can actually use after we drop off the colonials. It's better than what the other nations start with, capable of carrying 4 items instead of the usual 2. This is the backbone of our colonial expansion, and we should exploit it to the fullest. We're going to return to Amsterdam for badly needed supplies and colonists.

The two units we're leaving behind on the American continent are a soldier and a pioneer. The soldier is a veteran, meaning he's better in the use of his muskets. The pioneer on the other hand, isn't an expert, he's just a regular colonist with 100 tools. He can however become hardened with use, or taught later by a hardened pioneer in a school. But we have more pressing things that schooling now...like survival!

Yes, this is indeed a good location. We have an area surrounded by forests, and one of them has a bonus...if we can get some lumberjacks out here New Amsterdam is REALLY going to boom!

Our soldier founds the city while the pioneers go out to build our road network. Even though our soldier has a specialty, he can still do anything else...just without a bonus. If the Spanish show up to attack, we can go back to being a soldier, but for now, we're going to chop wood.

Excellent! Just what we need, carpenters. They will allow us to build anything twice as fast as usual. Pro Tip: Every town needs at least one.

Another aspect of this game is the Continental Congress. You can pick from about 25 people from the history of the Americas. Each one gives a special bonus. In the beginning, Peter Minuit is probably the best of these to go for as he lets us take any native lands without payment. A real bonus that we can use immediately... after we get him into our Congress at least!

Our ship returns home. On the docks you can see the carpenter ready to go, free of charge. I think he's a freebie that you always get in the opening turns of the game if I'm not mistaken. At the top, we have a popup box explaining how things work, probably because we're on the easiest setting.

First up, we're going into the recruiting area and getting some scouts. These guys come with 50 horses, so 150 is a real bargain for them. We also can arm them with 50 muskets, can't have enough men at arms with the Spanish right on our northern border!

We also recruit farmers, and lumberjacks; the backbone of a starting colony!

Our ship arrives back in the New World. She pulls into New Amsterdam and docks. Our farmer farms, our lumberjack lumberjacks, and our carpenter carpenters. With our basic needs sorted, our soldier and scout stand at arms outside the settlement.

More natives! These are the Cherokee, a tribe south of the Iroquois. We're going to make peace with them too, and hopefully exploit them against the Spanish!

Not yet though...we're simply going back to pick up another carpenter and a free colonist...this is someone with no skills at all, but there's a surprise with them.. more on that later.

While our ship was on the way back, we got our lumber mill done. This doubles our building output, and is really the first building to build since it's so powerful. Afterward, we start work on our stockade, because we don't trust those Spanish!

We send our scout to visit the Cherokee. They seem happy to see us!

We learn that they can train scouts in this particular village. Useful, since this is a huge continent and we want to explore it for treasure. They also give us some beads that turn out to be worth a LARGE sum of money!

The natives can train your citizen only once if I remember right after that they will tell you that they thought you and so he should pass the knowledge. Also through hard work can a colonist gain expert or master rank too. There sometimes can be hired petty criminals that through work or education go to the rank of slave and then a colonist.

There are also random encounters that do stuff. For example you can find fountain of youth that will make outburst of people that want to sail to the new world.

Our furs...sell for a paltry 336 gold. Definately need to get some people back to New Amsterdam so we can effectively make coats or something. For recruitment we have a distiller for 132, a silver miner for 260, and a hardy pioneer for 300....bargain! Rounding out the load, we train an ore miner for 600.

As the ship returns, we complete our stable...those carpenters are REALLY speeding things along.

Our ship sails into port. Since none of these people but the pioneer have a speciality we really need atm, we hand the distiller a musket, put the miner in the forest foraging for food and put the silver miner to a rather important task: Liberty Bells. This is what makes our colonies more efficient, and if we get enough, they can become more self sufficient. This is very critical as our population approaches 10 at a colony, as if you have 10 loyalist citizens, you lose efficiency...but if we can get that loyalty under 50%...we get a bonus!

A word on those round things we've sent the scouts out for: They are random. Some good, some bad, some really really good, or some like this one....Nothing at all!

Our pioneers are out building a road to a Cherokee village to make trade easier. They however have a problem about this and demand payment for the road... Since we want to be on good terms with them, we give them 292 in compensation.

A couple of years later, our 24 hammer output has built us a warehouse, doubling our storage to 200 of each product. Now it's time to build a church as a beacon of religious liberty to draw over more settlers.

From the Iroquois, he learns the ways of the scout. Just what we need atm, as there are rumors of another continent to the south and we are mounting an expedition to investigate.

Our scouts roam America following up on local rumors. This one leads us to a tiny undiscovered tribe. The chieftan gives us 50 gold.

And we comeplete the docks. This allows our ore miner to go do something much more productive than subsistance foraging: Fishing!

We them build a schoolhouse, then focus on the first building that is going to require tools to complete: The Printing Press. This will be a building that will boost our liberty bell output and allow us to get more rebel sentiment in the colony, as well as speeding up the formation of the Continental Congress.

New natives! This is a tribe in western American calling themselves the Sioux. Our scout asks to speak with their chief.

He learns that this village can give us fur trappers. A really useful skill that we can seriously use with all the furs in the east. Why we can't learn this from the Cherokee and Iroquois is beyond me...

The lady in the bonnet shows up to tell us that our printing press is full of hammers but needs tools to finish. Luckily for us, you can actually buy the extra tools. They are a 3 week boat ride from Europe but we can buy them...somehow.

And the colonial militia guy pops up to tell us what we already knew. 10% rebel sentiment, and he explains the rewards for getting a city up to 50%. Also: Adam Smith!

Now that we have a firm footing, this guy is awesome to have. He is required to unlock the factory level production buildings. These will allow us to make huge amounts of goods, while boosting efficiency by 50%!

Well, looks like the Iroquois aren't as friendly as they appear to be.. They are raiding our settlement!

Why did the ship take so long to return to the new world? Because the captain was incompetent and stayed in Amsterdam for several years, that's why! Anways, since our building is coming along so quickly, we're going to send one of the carpenters to teach in our new schoolhouse. We're looking to train either that indentured servant or the free colonist in the forest foraging as another carpenter so that we can found another city further inland. Also, our elder statesman is really boosting the libtery bell production now, up to 19!

Wondered when Iroquois will attack. I think they are more aggressive tribe. Don't know if Apaches are here too if so they will probably attack too others might be more friendly. Don't know if they also attack if you are too good friends with other tribe.

Our wagons arrive at the Cherokee village. Seems they are pissed with us or something..

They still give good prices though. We more than triple our money! Though, they tell us they want things that we don't have, and are willing to take things we won't give...so, another village I guess!

Back in Amsterdam, our ship arrives and what do we have here? Cheap fur traders! This is what we really need back in the colonies with all the furs we just bought so they we can turn around and sell 11 gold coats with our 3.47 gold furs!

In the southwest of the continent, we meet a new tribe: The Aztecs. We sign a peace treaty with them as well.

And as we are leaving to return home, we learn that the war between the English and Spanish has ended. Spain has been forced to cede her American colonies to the British. This happens every game. One of the other three powers gives up its colonial assets to another. I guess it's meant to give you a more difficult time if you go to war and have a double sized empire to go up against.

From what I can figure out, it's triggered when you hit 50% overall rebel sentiment. This is also when you're allowed to declare independence, so I'm guessing it's to give you a stronger rival in the New World and stop you from beating the game too quickly.
