Similarities between XCOM and Apocalypse

Recommended Posts

I've been playing Apocalypse again this week, and i couldn't help but notice several similarities between the aliens in the XCOM FPS and the aliens in Apocalypse.

First thing is that both aliens can teleport around, use energy shields and come from another dimension.

Second, is that they apparently don't want to invade, but consume/terraform our world since they can't survive here as it is.

And the third similarity.. well.. i'll just let these pictures speak for themselves:

Notice any similarities? These blocks, cubes and things... both aliens have them as part of their worlds.

Yeah, the primary difference seems to be that we'll meet the aliens in reverse order - Apoc didn't introduce the micronoids until late game, and no one ever really thinks of them as the "face" of the alien invasion, though it's true that a lot of the game doesn't make sense until you understand what they are.

True. I did wonder how so many different-looking alien types were working together in harmony initially.

The case can also be made that they (the aliens in apoc) were invaded by the same "outsiders" as the ones in the FPS and their world was successfully terraformed. We still haven't seen all there is to see in the FPS, but there might be another intelligence behind it. If there is, i doubt it would be revealed in trailers (at least hope not).

By the time Apocalypse rolls out the micronoids could be another form of the "living tech" alien we saw in the FPS. Probably coming in a different form because the original invasion back in 1950 was a flop. In my mind, psionics is a much more elegant and effective way of controlling humans than invading their bodies.

Funny, I had wondered about it as well because of the interdimensional aspect. It can simply be a coincidence - I quite honestly don't think that they will include everything from the original series because it's a reboot. We might even be surprised at some twist from the original plotline when the 2012 game comes out.

The curious thing will be to see how the 2 games tie up - there's an XCOM division of the FBI on the 1950s and then XCOM as a secret UN organization on the 2000s... what happened inbetween? And what about the differences in the aliens? Completely unrelated? Could might as well be.

In quick news, the FPS has been postponed to Q1 2013, which means it will be released more or less in the same time as the TBS reboot, around october.

They might change some things in the story for the FPS.. who knows. The game was almost finished and while one can say that they just want to get clear of ME3, 6 to 7 months is a long time.
