What am I building?

Ok so I know I haven't finished the laptop yet but I'm still waiting for materials which should be arriving this week. In the meantime, I've started something else :) It's been on the cards for some time so I've been able to plan it quite thoroughly and hopefully it will go down without too many major catastrophes but I only started yesterday really so we'll have to wait and see!

In the mean time I fancied being vague again so I'm going to see if anyone can tell what I'm actually doing... You aren't getting any clues just yet as that's no fun and you aren't getting a very useful or up to date image either but it'll be fun to see some guesses :(

Anyway, it's not X-Com this time but it is from the gaming world (ok I guess you get one tiny clue!) See what you think to my new creation :)

Haha I've chosen a rubbish picture from yesterday so good luck getting it right away but I'll put up a slightly better one tomorrow. If it helps, you're looking at the front left corner (it won't help :()

EDIT : No cheating as the name of the image totally gives away what it is lmao If you can't resist peeking then by all means do but don't spoil the game :)

It's a pigeon bath.

Of The Future™.

See the sleek aerodynamic blocky design? See the spacious space in middle that is a space that can be filled with water so there's less space? It has edges so it won't roll if it is left on its side. Comes in china white, and a lighter white that's not quite white but still white enough to be counted as white. Easy installation and operation, no plugs or pedals that need pedaling.

Oh wait, you mean the tank? Um... it's a Dune 2 Harkonnen Devestator tank or maybe a harvester?

Hey surprisingly close guesses NKF :) Not quite got it yet though. Here's a pic of how it looked yesterday but it's not quite that far along now as I had an oopsie and had to redo the top :)

So this is now the front right side with some of the top on. It's not the actual top though, there's much more to come :)

No more guesses? Really? Ok here's a gimme then, it's obvious from this point forward and anyone not getting it should really be ashamed :)

It's the front left corner again :)

Hell yeah it is :)

For those interested in progress so far you'll find a worklog for the project HERE

I've got the hull mostly finished now but I need to keep the top open for now as I need to figure out a way to keep it accessible later on so I can get to the hardware. What do you mean what hardware? It's in 1:16 scale... Of course it's going to be an RC tank, why else do people build at 1:16 :)

So yes I'm currently on the scrounge but I already have about 10 lengths of track, 16 drive wheels and 2 gearboxes on the way. I need 2 more boxes and controllers for the whole build but right now I just want to get it built for which I only need tracks, wheels and boxes...

Anyway, I've only got 1/4 track carriages done so far but aim to have the second finished tonight. Once all four are finished it's onto the turret and then time to detail and get it roadworthy :) Without a doubt this initial bit of the build is going to be the easiest, setting up the hardware and painting/detail will be a hell of a job with my limited resources.

Still, it's gonna make the other boys look like they're driving little toys :(

If you don't have an airbrush set and either an air compressor or an adapter with some cans of compressed air (which is much cheaper than a compressor for a single job), I think this is the time to start thinking about it. You can get some pretty basic ones cheap, but obviously the best one are a bit expensive. Best way to colour a model tank and do some nifty camouflage effects.

Actually, that begs a question. What colour? Olive, red or a custom?

Thanks NKF, I think you're right. I'm a modeller anyway when I get time so an airbrush would be great to have, it's the first time I've been free to model for a long time though so I'm almost re-equipping myself from scratch! As for colour scheme I'm leaning towards the standard GDI beige right now and of course the eagle motifs are a must.

I'm going through some ponderings right now as to what sort of technology is used in this vehicle. It's a cold-war Russian super-heavy tank so I'm going by that profile to determine what sort of weaponry and power plant would be used. My last post on RCtankwarfare is me solving the gun problem by arming it with a pair of 11" naval guns (what too much :)) but I'm still undecided on an engine. I'd like it to be visible through the rear grill but that limits my options even more as I'll need something I can salvage from a kit!

Here she is folks, track armour nearly finished so now it's time to start working my way up again! Still waiting for the grill to be delivered but it's in the post now and I picked up a sieve from the cheap shop which I've already chopped up ready to turn into an exhaust grill :) Fun fun fun!

Finally got the turret done and finished the hull top today so I thought a share a teeny tiny update. The full worklog is here for anyone interested in the build. Off to work on some internal detailing now :)

Thanks guys :P Been building some gearboxes today to flesh out the engineering bay in the back but no updates for a while! Should be back to working on the tracks soon though so that'll be the next landmark. Can start some hardware testing once all 4 are done yay :)

If you've got room, you could rig up some speakers and a cheap MP3 player in it to play Ride of the Valkyries or MP3 versions of the game music while you're controlling it...

*sigh* I do say things that first come to mind don't I?

For the life of me I can't find it now but I came across an amazing website a while back where some chap had modified a bunch of Games Workshop minis to make some C&C units in 28mm scale. He had engineers, rocket squads, militia, fanatics and even a NOD buggy! If anyone finds them post a link in here as it's on topic (ish) and the stuff was just great so it'd be nice to share it with others who are interested :)

But anyway, that stuff would obviously be way too small for me... I could get hold of someone with a 1:16 RC Abrams though which is of course the C&C medium tank... Slap a GDI logo on the side and they'd look pretty sweet next to each other about to squish some noddies lol.

Honestly I have no idea where I'll keep this thing once it's finished, currently it's atop my refridgerator and it overhangs every side even without it's guns :P We'll see but there's a long time for that yet, not even got the first engine build so far :) That said though it is well on it's way. I have the powerplants and transmissions from two super-detailed Trumpeter 1:16 T-34 kits and am modifying them to suit my purpose. Here's my transmission system in bitmap form and a few shots of the first gearbox in it's semi-finished form.

Going to start on the engine today but I'm trying to figure out how to break up the grey a bit. The box is ok as it is but if I can't highlight enough parts on the engine it'll look a bit crap... Going to try and get started on it now anyway so will let you know how it goes :)

Oh and I DO actually have smoke and sound going into this so expect exhaust and running engines :)

Nor did I SV! lol I figured that I may as well do a little interior decorating to make use of that grill I had made for me so I'm making the engineering bay in it's entirety. Remember how Mammoth tanks can heal up to 50% because of their on-board engineering crew? Well this is where that engineer spends the journey and looks after the mechanics!

First things first I actually designed the whole vehicle in engineering terms which means engines, gearboxes, transfers, controls, turret machinery, everything. Ask me something about the mammoth tank and I can probably give you a good answer about now!!!

Anyway, the rear compartment I'm detailing will house 2 of the tank's 4 fuel tanks (there's one behind each track) and of course the 2 T-34 V12 diesel engines I've managed to get my hands on thanks to a legend of a guy from the tank site! I've turned the gearboxes from the kit through 90 degrees in order to allow a transfer box to sit between them in the centre of the bay (I'll have to scratchbuild it later) This is because each engine provides power to it's respective side of the drivetrain but in the event that one fails this transfer box will allow a single working engine to drive both sides of the tank.

Between the two engines will be the battery compartment for the vehicle which is located underneath the engineers crawlspace. These batteries are fed by generators on each engine and supply power to the turret for both rotation and gun elevation. The size of the hardware makes it completely impossible and impractical to use manual methods...

There won't be much else to see in the back so realistically it shouldn't be too big a job. I'm thinking about fitting a red light in there to show it off a bit more as currently it'll be difficult to see anything at all while the tank is all together. The trick will be making a portion of the tank removable to show the interior off a bit more but I can't think of any way to do it without removing the turret right now. But meh, we'll see. At least I'll know it;s there lol

Anyway here's a picture of the entire left-hadn powerplant mocked up with just a flat coat of dark grey applied. I'm pondering how to detail it so as to add a little more colour. I think I have an idea of what to do but I just posted that on the other website so I don't want to talk about it again :P Give me some opinions if you feel generous :)
