Captain the Planet?

Climate change, dwindling resources, ever-growing human population, all modelled based on the latest scientific data. These are the factors you'll be dealing with in Fate of the World, a strategy game which looks to put the player at the head of GEO (Global Environment Organization) starting from 2020 and for a period spanning some 200 years into the future.

Then, if the balancing act of pleasing demanding populations whilst striving to maintain environmental sustainability should eventually drive you bonkers, you can always bail out and leave everyone else in the dust in the Star Ark mission, or go Dr.Apocalypse, and totally "lose it" in a mission to raise the world temperature to roasting point.

The choice is yours, as they say. For those who pre-order, come the 29th of October access will be given to the game's beta.

Soothsayer acquired the rights to Fate of the World earlier this year and now they've announced a sequel is slated for release in 2016.

Here's a bit on what to expect:

The key new feature is the move to a multi-agent system where you, as a national premier, have to diplomatically engage with other world leaders, as well as participate in simulations of real-life conferences and voting blocs, such as the UNFCCC COP, G-77, and LDCs.

This means we can offer a multiplayer version of the game, which will be much faster to play thanks to innovations like an accelerable real time game engine and a new approach to in-game diplomacy. On the data model side, we’ll be covering elements that just didn’t feature in the original, such as detailed land usage and ocean simulation, and the environmental decay of natural resources.

Our demographic model will broaden, too; this time, to make a game that let players examine our society and its interaction with our environment in a way no other game does.

Other stated overarching goals are:

(...) incentivising players to value the interests of their regions while also needing to retain a habitable and pleasing planet.

(...) to make the game more accessible, easier and quicker to play, and more detailed in its examination of the subject.

Apparently a Kickstarter initiative is also being considered in order to make all this possible.
