Not the usual problem

So, given the famous problem with Win2K and later, I decided to use virtualization. VMWare player, running 98SE (fresh install plus VMWare Tools, sound drivers and DirectX 9.1c - I think). I've tried both the recent 2k Games version (direct2drive) and the original CD-ROM (with and without 1.2 patch). In the 2k Games version, on trying to run the game the pointer becomes an hourglass for a second or two, then seemingly nothing, and then about 20 second later a "Zebulon application error" about a problem loading a module. The original version, with or without patch, does the same except no "zebulon" - no error at all, just doesn't seem to run.

 

This is very frustrating, especially as I've bought this game four times now...it's getting to the point where I'd consider making a win98 partition on my PC, except I don't think win98 drivers even exist for my video card.
