Space Voyager Posted November 18, 2020 Report Share Posted November 18, 2020 Games are of the least concern there IMO. You buy lease a game, play it for a while, you forget about it. With relatively small number of exceptions, you won't play it for long nor will you ever get back to it. Software is a bigger issue, higher prices and in some cases, only a yearly subscription possible. Consumers really should show the industry that they will boycott such products. If possible... Thorondor Posted November 18, 2020 Report Share Posted November 18, 2020 Both games and software are transitioning to a permanent SaaS (Software as a Service) model, SV, which is a sorry state of affairs. Productivity-oriented and other essential software should, at the very least, always have one perpetual license option. Personally, I steer clear of subscriptions as much as possible and have been mostly succesful in getting things done that way (can't fully escape the anti-virus/firewall side of things if high-end protection is to be had). But if we're really to be honest, there's no turning back regardless - just think of Windows itself and how different things have become from the "buy a license, get a CD an you're done until next version release in a few years" days. It started with service packs, then patch tuesdays, broken updates/update rerolls, etc. There's almost no final version of anything anymore. Even when you purchase a perpetual license for software, that's one version, and if the underlying OS it depends on to run gets forcefully updated, or reaches end-of-life in terms of official support, that is as good an excuse as any to continually push you to purchase again what you already own. The only shining bit of this broken future is open source software. With good solutions and the right incentives it can be viable, and worth donating to.
