This is a brilliant little feature, but seems to be dying out.  My last phone had a nice bright LED, and I used it a lot.  Very handy.
A lot of phones have a double use for the photo flash, as a flash and as a torchlight. I agree, VERY useful.

My current phone doesn't have one, but it does have a useful feature which lights up the entire screen bright white, which is useful at short range, but too diffuse to really stand in for a torch.

Doesn't seem to be included on any smartphones, sadly.

All that said, I love the 3GS and they do make really good phones on the whole, even if I hate the company

Quite happy to buy one, but the only ones left seem to be for fairly shitty tariffs.  Think it'll be a HTC Desire, which I can get now, and it will be easier on my wallet.

Why can someone not come down on them like a tonne of bricks and make them do a recall already? It is becoming a joke now. Guess that's what happens when you rush things in a 12 month development cycle just so you've got a new phone to roll out every year!

Apple are having a briefing tomorrow on the antenna issues.

Will they just say "suck it up" and dig themselves into a bigger hole, or are they hoping to ride it out as the iPhone 4 is still selling like hotcakes to those who are oblivious to the whole issue or who just don't care?

It'll be interesting to see what they say anyway. They need to be a bit more careful with how they phrase things than they have been recently anyway - "hold it differently" still gets me every time, as does the duct tape solution:

So they're giving away bumpers. Woo. And he's said once again that this issue affects all smart phones, which is crap as it doesn't affect my 3GS, nor my old XDA. They seem to keep trying to brush this bridging the gap between the two antennas under the carpet.

Apparently they got less than 1% complaints through their customer service channels so what's the big issue? Well in my view the big issue is that folks post on the Apple support forums to complain more publicly instead and then have their threads deleted - not good.

Still torn between the Desire and the iPhone 4 though as the issue only seems present with some handsets and Mr Jobs is now offering refunds through to September if you're not completely satisfied - more than enough time to see if you got a bad phone.

I think I need to stop rambling about it and go and play with a HTC Desire in a shop to see what the difference is.

Hilarious Smartphone Security Solution.

Theft Aware maybe the greatest invention in the history of mankind.  Here is why:

Wow. I'm almost tempted to get one of these and let it be stolen on purpose, just so the police can nab them with the goods.

It would be excellent to let them walk a few steps and then activate the siren.

Alright, so.  Ordered a HTC Desire, fairly comprehensive contract, £30 a month for 24 months on T-Mobile.

Days later, I spot a better contract, for £20 a month for 18 months.  On T-Mobile.

I cancel the first order under the UK Distance Selling Regulations (allows you to cancel anything at all, for any reason, within 7 days), order the second.

Now, bear in mind, I've got the phone and everything from the first deal.  I am denied the second deal after returning the first.  My credit isn't good enough.   :P

I don't see why. It's not like you'd failed to pay a bill for the first phone as you wouldn't have had one yet.

Most peculiar!

Ehm, it is called capitalism that we have. Why would they let you degrade the deal that is better for them? The better offer came later and you have sadly signed up earlier.

Except naturally if they care about their customer for a longer period of time...

Makes sense...  :P

I have the Desire too. Quite happy with it! Only two things that really annoy me is battery life (common enough problem with touch phones) and WAY too small internal memory (constant bother with apps).

I have everything arranged to root and flash it, allowing me to partition the micro SD card however I like, making as much room as I want for apps.  16GB card, wanted a 32 but they are a tad expensive ATM (£15 for 16GB, £60-70 for 32GB).

That's nice! I've considered rooting, but haven't seen great use for it yet. If one can use SD space for internal memory that sure makes rooting more tempting. Thanks for the tip!

Yup, you can basically fool the phone into thinking a partition of the card (as big as you like, though I don't think you'd need more than a gig) is internal memory.

Isn't the default app limit about 150MB, Slaughter?  I feel your pain.

That it is. I don't make a habit of installing kitty pets and lightsaber sounds, but it's still annoyingly small (and I have serious trouble seeing why they chose to save money on internal memory, given how cheap memory is these days). Anyway, thanks for the heads up! Suggestions for useful apps?

appbrain is actually quite good, but back up your app list under another name on it as well (e.g. if it's HTC Desire Apps, save another copy under HTC Desire back up).  I watched a friend (possibly an idiot) sync his list to his phone, instead of his phone to his list, blanking his list on appbrain and putting exactly nothing on his phone.  If this happens to you, you can just use the back up list.

LauncherPro, Titanium for app backup, Theft Aware, Swype (not even on the market, still in beta, so sign up) or Swiftkey or BlindType looks pretty amazing, smsbackup+ for SMS/MMS/Call log (it saves everything to your gmail), Beautiful Widgets, SetCPU (for on-demand under/overclocking, not really for turning your phone into Skynet, more for saving power, extending battery life), winamp is actually pretty good, wifi syncing etc, Timeriffic for time profiles (dim & quiet at night, bright & loud during the day, bright but silent at work, etc), ESPN ScoreCentre if you want sports info.  I'll add more as my poor brains recalls them.

The best two places on the net for the Desire are Android forums and the xda dev forums.  A wealth of knowledge and clever people on there, plus plenty of guides to follow.

Shop around for the ROM you want, don't use the first one that looks good.  There are ROMS that include both HTC and Google versions of contact organisers and apps, so you can choose which one you prefer rather than having to take one you don't like.  LeeDrOID is an example (supports your native language too).

What's wrong with lightsaber sounds?! I have Yoda's "Message from the dark side it is" for messages and Imperial march for ringtune, so lighsabers are bound to be OK! :P
