The Default Base

The sponsoring nations met on 1998 Dec. (11th was it?). The game begins at noon 1999 Jan. 1. That's a period of what? three weeks?

By hook and by crook the default base can be built in 55 days. Add four days for delivering the last aircraft and getting it ready. So 59 days or ground is broken as late as 1998 Nov. 2.

There seems to be an inconsistenccy here. Anyone care to explain?

the initial base in the game is probably an old military base that just happens to exist right where you want it to...

uh huh! https://www.xcomufo.com/forums/html/emoticons/dry.gif

So much for the first base being ultra-secret! If only they'd said the meeting took place in early september instead. . . .

https://www.angelfire.com/games3/jeffy90/images/smilies/smile.gif : Special delivery to the first X-Com base. 10 rifles and a few auto-cannons.

https://www.angelfire.com/games3/jeffy90/images/smilies/power.gif : How do you know how to get here, anyway?

https://www.angelfire.com/games3/jeffy90/images/smilies/what.gif : That's a good question...

https://www.angelfire.com/games3/jeffy90/images/smilies/power.gif : Nevermind that. You know our secret. Now you must die.

https://www.angelfire.com/games3/jeffy90/images/smilies/argh.gif : Eek! No wonder no one likes doing the X-Com deliveries!!

The locations of the bases are known to only the highest government officials, and the existence of X-COM only to those present at the X-COM treaty signing. And these are not necessarily the same people. But careful behind-the-scenes intelligence work leads to infiltration and base invasions.

Julian Gollop (in EDGE #131) said he read "Alien Liason", a purported piece of nonfiction by Timothy Good, and incorporated elements of this into the background and flavor text for X-COM:UFO Defence. (Along with SHADO from the "UFO" TV series.)

The alien conspiracy websites have choice tidbits like this:

Dr. Richard Boylan:  "You're saying that the Lockheed X-22A antigravity fighter disc fleet, equipped with Neutral Particle Beam directed-energy weapons, and capable of effecting optical as well as radar invisibility, is deployed for worldwide military operations from the new U.S. Space Warfare Headquarters, located in hardened underground facilities beneath 13,528' King's Peak in the High Uintas Primitive (Wilderness) Area of the Wasatch Mountains, 80 miles east of Salt Lake City?"

NSA Informant: "Yeah, man"

I know where I'm planning MY next vacation. Oh wait - I'm a foreigner, better not. I might get fingerprinted on entry to the USA and it would do me no good to leave fingerprints all over secret military installations as well. ;)

JFG... perhaps I could be your inside man here? I only request one of those cool phones that hook into your ear and clip onto your suit sleeve (yeah I'll also need a nice suit) to report back to you. I mean, it's not easy to infiltrate these U.S. bases without spy style. If you at least look like 007 though, you can pretty much get anywhere you want.

Oh yeah Fox, gotta have the threads.

(If your cover gets blown, it might be the last suit you'll ever wear.) For the professional earpiece we might go with a high tec alien hybrid design.

Depending on your geographic location you could try the base nearest you such as Denver Airport, or even the underground base that was turned into a park - Camp Hero at the NE tip of Long Island in NY already has a few investigator's reports filed. Besides the humans, you might also encounter Greys (Sectoids) and Reptilods (Snakemen), according to Commander X and Branton's books on Amazon.

All this of course is Above Top Secret so don't let it go beyond this forum -

uhh Pete, this forum IS scrambled, right??

Just stumbled across this, following a link from Evil on a Budget:

If you've got the bucks, we've got your base.

Sample entry:

"Paris, MO, Hardened Underground Communications Vault on 13 acres (more or less), built in the 1960's as a nuclear war-proof communications center, 8,200 sq. ft. usable floor-space, 24" thick walls & ceiling, 2' to 4' of earth over, metal shield enveloping entire structure, heavy blast doors, 6 air vents with filtration and blast valve closure mechanisms, escape hatch emergency exit, 177 ft. free-standing tower, newer underground fuel storage tank (containing diesel fuel); Lighting, pumps, heating, cooling, dehumidification, & electric hoist - mostly operational and ready to use. Excellent for underground home or secure document storage facility. Near Mark Twain Lake. 100 miles from St. Lewis, MO.

Holy guacamole! They even have prices - comparable to the game!
