The whole water kills alien things ties in nicely with the alien alloys deteriote rapidly in water thing Don't remember the aliens though. I thought they were more Sectoidish? The intelligence was about the same, after all they are attempting to invade a planet that is 60% covered in water and whose inhabitants are 90% water!
