Am I just stooopid or what???

Hi comrads,

After playing both S2 and S3 I was so very excited in recently purchasing Hammer and Sickle.

Problem is... I can't even make it through the first mission !!!

Yup....it's the very first one where you have to make it across the border line.

As soon as I'm spotted, (which is usually the first or second enemy turn), I'm shot dead instantly with one blast from a soldier with an SMG! :D

(I loose count of how many game loads I've done)

Am I doing something really obviously wrong here, or is this game damn hard???

................I'm on the "Easy" setting.... which makes things really embarrassing!!! ;)

Help please,

Tiger

Duck and cover :D.

Take a (some) gamo-uniform from the Center, go prone, stay in the shadows(!), keep your balls

in the dirt, wait the tank arrive, cut fences, 'follow the edge' and if that doesn't help ... RUUUN!!

PS: I think they shouldn't see ya face... Are you a spy or what? ;)

As KoMik says, eat dirt. First you have to wait for the tank to make trouble. Than you crouch walk directly to the fence, and cut through. From there you crawl along the ridge, making sure to stay in the shadow all the way. I can take a screenshot and mark the route for you later today if you still can't make it.

On a related note, I think it was a mistake to make the first mission so hard. This IS a game for the fans of the genre, but too difficult openings might discourage even the biggest fans of the genre. After all it's not immediately apparent that you can hide in the "shadows" of the map so well (and you have to be very accurate). I enjoyed it when I figured it out, but it took me a while.

Many gamers are talking about the hardness of H&S so maybe I should try to write my thoughts as well (with my badbad English).

First mission:

It is not hard, period. At least it could be harder as well/hell. Gamer could be forced to kill 10 smg/rifle mobs with just a knife. It's 'STEALTH' mission (40% factor is moving in 'right' spots and 60% is right timing). Not hard to complete.

Overall:

Forced combat events in this game are hard, period. You can't just walk throught. This is a quite *short* game (at least to 'S^Veteran' like me) BUT if those events would be easier then the whole game would be more *shorter*. I think this game try to show how lethal gunfights can be.

I have always thought that 20% in S^S's combat situations are based on LUCK. I know that someones doesn't like that at all but I think that it's a one element in this game what make it more replayable. I mean, after reloading previous save, can you say that all happens in same ways than on the last time? That's because of the 'random-luck'.

What I didn't like:

Sometimes I didn't know was I allowed to do some 'freely my way probes'.

Postscript:

I think S^3 was even harder in some ways (hard objectives / pipe-runs / do or game totally over). I enjoyed to spend some time for thinking and maneuvering in H&S because games like this doesn't grow in trees (we are living in the *horrible* consoles's world now). I think.

Don't be embarrassed, most players experience those problems ;) . I am not a specialist in scripting but from what I gathered looking at the first mission script in the H&S editor is that those American and Russian soldiers in the first encounter get a "god mode" and maximazed skill at a certain point (I am not completely positive though)...

... So the choice is "simple". You either do the only right thing or die :D . Why is it that way?...I have no idea whatsoever...

Besides the "Easy" in H&S is "Normal" in SS/SSS (according to one of the developers)... Nothing to be embarrassed of, really. To have fun I would recommend using the custom difficulty and adjusting it according to your game style... Decreasing enemy APs and VPs could definitely help ;) .

Erm. Am I missing something about that first mission?

I waited for the tank like instructed. everyone ran towards it. I crept up to the fench, cut my way through and the crept on to the far side of the map. not a shot fired, didn't even get into turn based mode. Easy!

The next mission? now that was difficult. Note to developers, a little bit more instruction wouldn't have gone a miss. Having some idea of what to do is much nicer than "Now what the hell do I do" when you're hanging around for the next bit to happen :D

The crossing the fence mission has some element of chance to it. I don't know if it is random as of where the border guards on both sides are stationed on the map.

I have had a russian guard discover me due to the fact that I was in hidden mode and with my nose in the ground. I reloaded and sat kneeling in my civilian outfit (call me silly) and waited for the tank to come and then crawled to the fence in hidden mode crossed over and ran to the exit squares....

The execution squad mission is my current mission where I after lots of reloads took out the enemy with two rg-42 grenades and a burst of my SMG (I am playing as a sniper) and survived without a scratch....Now onward to the path of stealth destruction. :D
