BLASTER LAUNCHERS ALL THE WAY!!!

I'm a addict to the tactic jellyfishgreen stated above.
And blaster Launchers are great all purpose weapons.
(If you have atleast two guys equipped with them and nothing but bombs)

Cleraing LZ: Let your other guys shoot any alien right in front of the exit of your landing vehicel, than nuke the surrounding area. (Does even a better job than smoke nades)
Long range combat: Just nuke them. ;)
In building combat. Leave building, nuke it. :)
Close combamt: You just don't get into close combat. Except when you are in a landed ufo and want to save the power units. For any other purpose have a hover tank scout out the area, and when it spots an alien nuke it from the other side of the map.
Alien base: Stay in the elevators and nuke it. (Have a tank scouting)
Terror mission: Nuke around.  Watch out a bit that you don't kill too much civlians.
I absolutly love that things.

And for defending my own base and around intact power units I use heavy plasma.

ImO early in the game pistols are much better, than any other weapons.
Just give everyone a nade and a pistol and I am doing fine for the first 4 missions.
The best thing about pistols is, that you usually dont run out of TU and throwing nades is cheap as well (usually not more than 18 TU).
Even their reaction fire can be pretty usefull. Especially when firering more than 5 times.
Pistols are pretty usefull and loveable. Though I am running around with Heavy Plasma for everyone, as soon as it is available.

Overall it's a draw. HP just has the greatest punch and pistols  :)  I just love them. ;)

Woah, necro... but I haven't even voted on this one! Posted Image

On TFTD the Thermal Disrupter Launcher is best because there are a lot more of them in aliens hands. With MC skill, this is very much in your favour.

This isn't the case in UFO, where I tend to rely on the Heavy Plasma. Although it requires ammo, you generally won't go through a clip per mission, so that's alright.

My vote went for the Heavy Plasma because the question asks "What Is The Best Weapon In UFO?", not "What is your favorite weapon?". The heavy plasma rules superior to any other weapon in this game for many reasons.

- It has 35 rounds per clip, so very rarely does a soldier run out mid-mission.

- Even though the heavy plasma is considered a "heavy weapon", it does not act like one. Fully loaded, it weighs in less than the heavy cannon, auto cannon and heavy laser.

- This is the only "heavy" weapon in the game that has an auto shot! Well, the auto cannon also has an auto shot but it is considered a "boarderline" heavy weapon.

- With 115 points of damage, a couple of hits can kill practically anything.

- The aimed shot for the heavy plasma is 110%, at least 20% more accurate than the heavy cannon, auto cannon or heavy laser. (The rocket launcher equals the heavy plasmas accuracy for the aimed shot at 110%).

- One of the few weapons which can punch through alien alloy walls (not hulls) and shoot out an alien power source.

- Few alien species are resistant to plasma fire. Plasma bolts do normal damage to everything except Sectopods and Zombies.

I could go on and on about the heavy plasmas strengths but I think you get the idea.

So what is my favorite weapon? It has to be... the Laser Pistol, although any laser weapon is game in my book! I always equip my heavy weapons folk with a laser pistol in case they run out of ammo, or when they attack the inside of a UFO. Snipers always get a Laser Rifle. For soldiers with enough strength, the heavy laser packs a wallop when used at point-blank-range.

My second favorite weapon? It is not really a weapon at all, it is the lowly stun rod! Almost every mission one of my soldiers gets to use one somewhere. I am completely confident when using a stun rod and never cringe when someone utters its name. Practice makes perfect (not to toot my own horn or anything)!  ;)

The heavy plasma is #3 in my book for the reasons listed above.

Happy shootin' everyone!  :)

Just imagine your hometown is the innocent victim of alien terror!

Now do you want to see a bunch of rag tag cowboys packing pistols and rifles?

Not me, that's a fact!

I want the Best defense money can buy.

When the troops land they'll be suited in armor and packing HEAVY PLASMA!

When they leave with the spoils of their victory the survivors of the city will say to each other "That truly was a fine group of well  disciplined and well armed young soldiers"

Sopwith Camels didn't win the Battle of Britain nor were there Spitfires in the skies over the Falklands.

Technology, its how your reading this now.

I was going to write a long response, with references to panzers, winter and Hogan's Heroes (no, don't ask) and whatnot. But I decided a succinct response would seem less patronising and confrontational (none intended, by the way).

Technology's good. But the ability to use it well (or to use it at all, in some cases, such as computers - 'where's the on button?' ) and achieve desireable results is just as important, if not more.

I mean, if an old granny with a shopping bag can incapacitate the ethereal high lord supreme generalissimo commander, that would be great. Grand even. If a hulking mound of technological junk weilding the ultimate deathray cannot even survive against a crippled and unarmed sectoid, well... er,  it just wouldn't be right. ;)

I've got a cliche phrase in my head, but I cannot find the right words. Something about sweat and hard work being 99% of the battle or somesuch. Blast. Never mind then.

I do apologize to anyone who may have been offended by my lame attempt at being cute and simply have voted, Heavy Plasma.
To roughly quote the baron of swamp castle in the Holy Grail "let's not argue and bicker about who killed who."
If the Hogan's  Heroes response is as good as the succinct response, I vote for it too.
Unless you don't mention Sgt Schultz, he was my favorite character.
With out prejudice or malice,

Have you guys ever read The War of The Worlds? They had all the technology the 1890's had to offer them and yet were losing the war until the aliens started dying from the simple, earthly bacteria!

Point in case, if you come face to face with a Sectoid... sneeze on him!! ;)

Hah, I should've come back to this thread sooner when the idea was still fresh in my mind. Now I know nothing. Nooothing!

It was probably something to do with tank platoons (or maybe giant guided rocket launchers) being ineffective because of a few simple actions by a small group of guerrilas or some such silly nonsense. In the context of Hogan's Heroes it would've been they had Commandant Klink. ;)

As for tank platoons and winter, I recall reading somewhere, or maybe someone told me, that one of the battles in WWII was lost by the Germans even though they had superior firepower (or rather numbers) but were forced to march home in the cold because their tanks were rendered useless by the winter. I'm not too good with my history so this is probably just hearsay.

- NKF

P. S: Stalingrad. The Russians would've been crushed had the Germans invested in some antifreeze. Instead, their tanks were rendered useless. Because they couldn't get in reinforcements, the German soldiers had to get back home on foot and were harassed by the Cossacks with their horses and sabres.

The heavy plasma will always be my standard equipment.

It is usually wielded by my standards, as it is relatively light-weight, powerful, fairly accurate, and it can be found littering the ground on every battlefield.

My scouts/snipers will be outfitted with Plasma rifles. These will be the only people to have grenades.

My HWs are usually turned into scouts at this point, capable of traveling vast distances in a single turn.

Finally, the lazy buggers in the Avenger never move. They sit and mind control aliens all day. Tis sporty to them. On occasion one of them will shoulder his mighty Blaster Launcher and blow a barn into oblivion, my troops are usually more devastating to the area than the aliens. Need illumination? BAH! Use the blaster bomb to ensure that nothing is there.

Tip: get flying armor for everyone and blast a hole in the roof of the larger craft. (Supply Craft, Battleship) So much easier to simply shoot the aliens in the back as you come down, and when they finally catch on you send your backup force in the front door...

You know what would actually be the best weapon in the game... The Plasma cannon ;) If you could equip it to six guys and just have them walk around blowing the buggery out of everyone you'd be sorted :)

It actually would be cool if you could paint a target and have the Avenger do a bombing run :)

I know what you mean, like when you have your lighting with its cannon on top in a mission, and it doesn't come to anyones mind to use it.
