Drones

Ok,

I have played a lot of games, and I always figure that someone you can train is 99 times in 100 more worthwhile than something you can't

Hence why I have pretty much ignored the drones. I never bothered to build one, even with my factories idle. I like 7 tough troops in my squad, and don't feel I need machines

I am wanting other peoples thoughts on Drones. Are they even worth it.

pro's con's

IU've built one and I trained up one lowly Cyborg as a technician to deploy it. Imagine my surprise when the HUMANS are the only folks capable of fitting it into their backpacks! :(

I never bothered after that as I have strict training regimes for my human squad members - mostly it involved becoming snipers first and then Gunmen and then there's one more slot which I ain't wasting on Technician.

Sorry, that wasn't very helpful, but may help someone who's about to train the wrong species to deploy a drone (of course, it might just be thaty it was a wheeled drone that made it so big, but who knows?)

Well as you can see i have a pretty nice collection :( :

I think they are quite useful, for example look at thet JOE-01 guy, he can destroy buildings or kill a wargot soldier in one shot.

Plus they can see half the map in infra, and you can make your scout drones mobilised bombs, or little shotguns, etc... Theyre very good in escort and capture missions, since they can detect all enemies on the map in seconds.

Whats this thing with the backpack and the technician? I just drag them into the squads... if i place them in backpacks i can use more or what?

Hehe, I'm fairly confident with my HK-33's modded up to the max with AP rounds, Heavy Armour, bonus hitpoints on my men, level 3 sniper abilities, Gunman level 3 ability so they can't be knocked down in explosions and infra red on my Cyborgs...

...I have no need for these toys... yet :(

I have a couple of drones, but I use them only when my soldiers are in training. I have 9 well trained experienced soldiers, and sometimes when there are to many of them in training (especially when training for the third level) I find having some drones as back-up a good solution.

But maybe in the future when I will face some very though enemy's .(Haven't encounterd starghosts yet) The auto destruct option can come in handy maybe?

Now seriously: If you would put this cyborg of yours against a heavy shielded defender with walkers and a missile louncher or sonic gun on it i wouldnt be so sure wich would win:)

I havent tried the auto destruction things yet.. So cruel with your little robots :( They dont deserve it.

Of the four basic human assault rifles (AK47, HK33, M4, XM8), the XM8 is the only one I consider worth having. The others are okay as a stopgap, but that is all. The XM8 has the best range, accuracy and rate of fire, advantages that more than make up the fact that it has smaller rounds than the AK47. Plus it looks like the sort of rifle that will kick Wargot behinds.

Regarding drones, the Wargots had one the first time I ran into them, and it withstood a heck of a lot of damage as it made mincemeat of two of my best soldiers. I want one!!!!!!!

Weird - I must have misread because I hought the HK-33 was more accurate for some reason... Oh well! It's my weapon of choice because I have 7 of them then so everyone on my squad can have one :(

I'd build other guns, but I've only got one factory for that as I've got 27 Space Programme Factories instead :(

With regard to drones, it occurs to me that a drone is much more expendible than a level 15 soldier, which makes it highly useful in a mission.

For instance, say you think some enemies with powerful weapons could be lurking round the corner. Whoever takes point is going to suffer, so you give that job to a drone.

Also, there may be times when you get into a fight with some enemies that are too tough for your squad. Sacrificing a drone to hold them off for a moment or two could buy your soldiers enough time to get back to the landing craft.

And that is before we start thinking about the possibility of sacrificing a drone or two as a diversion in an extraction mission.
