S2 Wouldn't Start and Crashes System

Stumbled across this forum while seaching for UFO: AM sites and based on what I read I searched out a copy of S2 - only place I could find with a copy in the US was EBay.

 

Just got it in the mail and every thing looked in excellent condition. Loaded the game without a problem, clicked on the desktop icon and the system shows an S2 graphic then goes to a black screen. After about 10 minutes I decide this is NOT a super slow load and try to go to Task Manager and discover that the keyboard is locked. ReBoot, reclick = same behavior. ReBoot, try loaking in safe mode = same behavior.

 

I do not have the v1.2 patch installed, will do that tonight.

 

Any advise would be greatly appreciated - seems like this would be a great game.

 

Basic Sys Info:

- Win 98SE

-AMD Athlon 1800+ 1.5G

- 512MB RAM

- nVidia 6200 256MB

Well, in addition to the latest patch, do you have the latest version of DirectX and Nvidia drivers?

Have DirectX 9.0b installed and not the latest nVidia drivers, but drivers that are newer than the game. Will be upgrading the nVidia drivers tonight.

Try to upgrade both drivers and DirectX (9.0c is the latest) and see if it helps. Not that likely, since as you say you have drivers that came after the game, but a good way to eliminate problems.

I pretty much had the same problem with Arcanum once.

Turned out that I needed to defragment my harddrive before I installed.
