Yup, they added slots to towns and cities (cities have more). You can choose what goods you want them to produce, they will still automatically trade with the main cities and cities from allies I think. You can also place castles on these slots, makes it easier to defend the town, but you'll have less goods that are producable. You can read about that here. There is also a new way to barter (see this blog), which looks interesting.
