crash on changing video options

Hi,

I posted this earlier to the Nival forums, but I've had no replies yet, so I thought I'd cross-post here as you guys seem to know what you're talking about. Hope someone can point me in the right direction with this problem I'm having:

I'm playing the UK version on a AMD Athlon 1700+ system running Win98 with 256MB and a MSI GeForce3 200 TI VT-Pro with 128 MB.

After I installed the game, it started up on the lowest graphics settings (which run very very smoothly). However, changing these settings crashes the games in various ways:

For instance, if I change resolution from the 800x600 32 bit it starts with, to 1024x768 32 bit, I will see the config screen change resolution, but when I leave the config screen, the screen corrupts and freezes, and I have to blindly ALT-F4 Windows into a restart.

If I change texture quality, again I will see the config screen change (it looks somewhat smoother), but leaving the config screen now crashes me right back to the desktop without any error.

All of the above with the out-of-the-box graphics drivers, so I then tried downloading the latest drivers from nvidia, which only makes things worse; it installs fine, and even adds some tabs to my display properties, but when I start the game now, even in safe mode, it won't start and just pops up a message saying my card is unsupported.

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong? I mean, even if some fancy options are not supported, I should be able to change resolution at least, shouldn't I?

Ok. Your card is definately supported.

NVidia drivers that come with the cards can often cause problems. I NEVER install the out-of-box drivers, as sometimes you'll have problems with them not removing properly when you update them.

So my first step would be to make sure I'd totally cleaned all traces of the NVidia drivers off the system and THEN re-install the latest from NVidia. One way to help with this process is to actually uninstall your card, put an old non-nvidia card in your PC, clean up any traces of NVidia, and then after a reboot or two, reinstall your NVidia card.

OK.. the other thing I'd look at (and this is quicker) is to actually play with the S2 Graphics Config tool that we have for download at S2HQ. There are some NVidia specific bug fixes that can ONLY be activated by using that tool or by manually editing the config file.

and last but not least ... a coul eof people have reported that a simple reinstall of the game has fixed problems.

I hope this helps you. Remeber, if you are having major problems you should really send your DXDIAG report to Nival tech support.

0. If you have got anything overclocked, set it back to standard value.

0.1. If you have FastWrite in BIOS enabled, DISABLE it.

0.2. Set the Texture Size ( or so ) in Bios to 32 Mbyte.

1. Download DriverCleaner

2. Use DriverCleaner to delete all traces of Nvidia Graphics Driver ( READ THE README / HELP )

3. Use DirectXBuster or similiar to delete DirectX.

4. Install DirectX 9b.

5. Don't install the newest drivers. Nonsense for Geforce III, it will only slow down. I have a GF 3 Ti200 myself, and use the 43.xx. Works without problems since 2 years with the exception of a rally game by microsoft. So, install 43.xx drivers.

6. Re-Install S2.

If it works, post here. If it doesn't, post here as well.

P.S. Mayhaps some problems with the refresh rate of your monitor ? See what your monitor supports.

P.P.S. Get 256 Mbyte additional ram. It costs nothing, and will speed up your pc tremendously.

P.P.P.S. WinXp.

Problem solved. I started with DxDiag, which informed me in LARGE LETTERS that the most recent nvidia drivers that I had installed had not been certified for use under 98 (apparently they only certify them for ME / XP anymore), and the direct3D test failed on every count. So I downloaded the 43.xx drivers suggested by Kitaro and they work like a charm (despite not having being certified either, but they pass the test at any rate). I guess Win98 doesn't like the newest nvidia drivers handling my card.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, you realy helped me out!
