The Russian Base (later story), how to do it?

Here are my tactics:

1. Equip your team with long range weapons (for example, I took 1x Zvi Falcon delivering some 250 damage up to 75m, 1x M82A1, 1x Accuracy Int'l L115, 1x PSG), some alien weapons (mine were 1x Adv Laser Gun & 1x Adv Plasma) and powerful short to medium range weapons (namely, 1x CAW, 1x Gatling Gun - it weighs about half a centner ... plus ammo pack(s) - so get your "Arni" ready :(, 1x Flamethrower, plenty of Fragmentation Grenades). Besides, my troops carried Heckler&Koch MP5 & MP7 bulletspitters and one Steyr Armee Universal Gewehr (ja, stimmt) but tastes differ. Don't forget about Medikits. Each of your soldiers should carry at least one of that.

2. So, I used long-ranged rifles along with Adv Laser & Plasma at the beginning of "Stalingrad" (that city had been renamed to Volgograd long before "Iron Curtain" fell and Капустин Яр is not some hush-hush secret research lab - it's a missile - incl. nuclear - testing ground) mission i. e. before the base gates. BTW when you approach the gates you'll realize Reticulans are waiting for you to enter. Try these tactics if you'd like: get the most nimble warrior into the perimeter to spot an alien while holding two or three others with their genades ready (the aliens usually walk inside the perimeter along the wall). Once your "spotter" shouts "Alien" or "Hey" or ... get him back - outside the fence - order your "throwers" to make that alien guy feel "a little shaky" - that works - I got two Bioarmour wearers out in this way! End up the "outdoor level" using your sniper rifles (I also used "ein Steyr AUG").

3. Underground. It's up to you to decide whether to "make them alien bastards pay" or to "jes' take one li'l thing I need". I chose the first method (actually, I've been doing that way since "UFO: Enemy Unknown"). When Gatling Gun fires at Bioarmour latter just whimpers. And the Flamethrower... 3900 damage at once - just don't show your nose off the corner until another Reticulan comes close enough! What'll be an outcome? For me it was: "you managed to kill 23 and incapacitate 4 enemies" & "7 soldiers were wounded. 6 of them will have to recuperate in a sick bay".

My troops were the following level:

17-15-16-15-15-16-12

P. S. And a piece of advice if you let me: don't expend any of your units. Not ever. Since the very first part of X-Com saga I've been abiding by the following rule: soldier is hired once and for all and will not be lost just because of mediocre tactics. Again, they cost money then

Hi In my game it is Mar 2005, my team has 1 9, the rest 6 though 8 (1 6, 1 8)

got 2 basic alien armor, but am starting to make Alien and improved armor now

is it too early to try this mission ?

it looks like I am not even close to the weapons you guys are talking about using yet

I got though the area 51 pretty easy, but got lucky too, had 3 bad guys turn the corner, were my Grey with my best SMG was standing and he took down all 3 before they could react

Actually the game sets these mission up depending on the current game phase you're in. I once waited out the Area 51 mission (US one, just in case someone confused it with the other one) until I had some sun armor, and I was fighting vs Rocket launching aliens !! In other words, don't delay it too much, or you'll be facing quite some heavy resistance.

Well March 24 2005

think I had the wrong base, it was a Alien base near Moscow

my little Grey was a hero, getting 7 kills, with Malcom getting 3 more, Data got the last one

oh well

my new super Doc , got his butt handed to him, twice, which am sure since he was in Alien armor, he should of been a goner, well the time he spends in sickbay should teach him the errors of his ways

was able to wear my first copy of the berzerker armor, that is a keeper

Figures

right after I left that battle, I got the mission for the russian base !

Apr 2nd 2005

with a little pre warning from here, my troops were off and running as soon as there boots hit the ground, and I think that pretty much saved them, some heavy fighting, but 5 of the bad guys went down and the last Alien shot dropped Data, but he still had a spark left in him, but couldn't heal him

set some overwatch right inside the gate, then sent Mystic (Malcom) on ahead, which was close to a mistake, he got hammered, and learned a new dance step, ducking the rocket rounds, while the overwatch was able to over power the bad guys with Fire rounds, another 5 down

got 6 troops left, the heavy Shootgunner is all but useless, he can't take any more damage and won't heal, the other 5 are hurting

sent 6 troopers inside

(really miss my little grey in these tight places, but he was able to train, so sent him to school, then got the mission, oh well, the other troops need to earn there pay also)

Flamer does some scouting and then sets up a flanking spot, Mystic and One head towards the file room, while Doc and Babe follow up, which, Babe ran into a bad guy in a already cleared area, so they stop to clean up and flank, which turned out to be a good idea, as another 5 Aliens fall to there guns, one good shot or blast and both of them will be down

One and Mystic turn the corner and run head into a Alien, which turns out to be a major fight, One is down and unhealable by the time the last Alien drops, Mystic puts all 5 out of action, looking for a power cell for his rifle, but no good, has to finish the raid with a lazer pistol, Mystic's healing pack is used up, and he is still pretty banged up, so do or die time

opens the next door, turns the corner and gets the drop on the next bad guy, look at the troops, and none of them are really able to replace him, all are hurting and he is still the fastest one around (miss my little Grey)

into the file room and another Alien, he goes down, but Mystic is staggering, run to the suitcase (suitcase, in a file room hmmm) picks it up and now not only is hurt, but he is slow

trip home is easy, but HARD on the nerves

Mission Success, 7 troopers wounded, 2 going to Sick bay, 22 Aliens killed and a number of new weapons found

on the ride back to base, R@D comes up with some new toys, along with the other troopers, dang, some of those could of come in handy

Data and One are going to be in the sickbay for a while, Mystic is sent to school, Mr Smith (little Grey) takes over the squad and two rookies are ready for there first mission

Life is Good, as long as you are alive to live it

OK, the first real shot I took at the Soviet base, I did it (but I had visited it once before in another -failed- game, had a picture of what I would have to face, so it's really not the first try actually). I tackled the Area 51 and the Soviet base as soon as they appeared (my game is on easy BTW, so probably why I had an easy time of it).

I had completed construction of 4 sun armours by then, and I had 4 steyr augs (sp, sorry), with 30-40 clips, so I picked out my strongest 4 guys (all guys BTW), lvls: 12 / 12 / 9 / 9. Loaded them up with their rifles, extra clips, dual medi kits, triple grenades. They ended up having excellent speed except for one who had to drop down to very good speed.

I started the mission, an alien appeared right next to me (laser pistol/gun), quickly dispatched with aimed fire (burst would have done it, but didn't bother). I walked towards the gate of the base, two aliens came up, one had a standar rifle, the other had what sounded like a laser minigun (I thuoght it was firing über fast). I killed the one with the minigun quickly (I had never seen that weapon before, so I didn't want it to fire a second time) then downed the one with the rifle.

Ran two more steps, saw a missle looming towards me, so I fired up my afterburners to spot the alien (the missle landed behind my soldiers). I saw the alien, took aim, and killed him before he could reload (after this point, I saved, got up from my chair and starting dancing and shouting "wohoooooo" since I had killed the first rocket guy without a scratch).

I realised I had cleared the courtyard and was ready to check who/what was behind the gates/walls. I lined up my men near the wall close to the gate, healed the wounded, switched to burst fire, picked one of my men, and ran (like a chicken with its head cut off ofcourse) parallel to the gate without stopping. No missles loomed toward me, so I thought I could take a peek inside.

I had the same guy enter through the gate, immidiately to his left along the wall there were three aliens, directly in front of him there were two others. I turned back, screaming "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK" at the top of my lungs as two missles loomed their way towards me and I heard more of that annoying minigun laser fire.

I positioned this "take a peek" guy to the other side of the gate, and I waited the aliens out. Didn't have to wait that long, they started coming out right away. The first two got downed before they could turn to face me, but the third rocket one (why did it have to be the rocket one) launched a missle a split second AFTER his body dropped to the ground (it may have been another alien on the other side of the gate that I couldn't see, though I doubt it).

Cursing my luck, I ran my three soldiers away from the wall and saved one of them from the blast (the other two got out after the blast, so no dmg was taken from the burning after the rocket hit). This proved disastrous, as the rest of the aliens poured out of the gate and the only one capable of fighting was the "take a peek" guy and the one that had escaped the rocket blast.

Still, they were able to kill the first alien that got through the gate. The second one out managed to launch a missle towards my wounded soldiers, who ran (yeah you guessed it, like chickens with their heads cut off). I downed the missle launcher by running up to him with the two healthy guys, healed the two injured ones, took a save, a deep breath, and entered through the gates.

Inside the gates I met another alien that had one of those laser miniguns but was no match for my squad of four. I easily/merrily made it to the enterance to the second level.

In the second level, I checked all my soldiers that they were on burst fire and started running through the rooms. I found a rocket launcher that was patrolling one of them and had his back to me. I blew his @ss off and ran to the corridor adjacent to the big file room. In the corridor, I met another laser minigun alien, took him out by aimed shot (too far for effective burst shot).

In the file room, I met two psi using aliens (one by one). They both took control of one of my guys, but I killed them in the next second, so no hard feelings. I met another laser minigun alien before I got to the files, killed it easily (apparently the laser minigun is less effective than its sound) and picked up the files and ran back LIKE A CHICKEN WITH ITS HEAD CUT OFF

Things that helped:

-The fact that my soldiers were moving so fast. It is not only out running (or running away from) the missles, it's also the fact that it helped me heal injured soldiers quickly in combat and put them back in action.

-Good guns. Four steyr augs (sp, sorry) could kill a reticulan in 1-2 turns in aimed mode. In burst mode, it takes one turn.

-Controlling the soldiers one by one instead of my usual "all do something together" fashion. My general way of handing missions was "run, spot, focus fire", this time I had to keep juggling the soldiers around and pull back injured ones and quickly heal them and return them, etc...

The "dead aliens launchin' rockets after their dead" - syndrom is well known. (or short "dalratd"). I really hate it when this happens.

And your other observations are absolutely correct: If you use your run-of-the-mill walk'n'shoot method in that missions you are doomed.

Actually, the aliens aligning themselves to the 2nd area 51 mission's base wall is quite common, it is so that after learning this, after getting rid of most of the aliens that are on "your" side of the wall you should spread out your men and bombard it continously and get ready to make a few or your men run out of rocket's harm way.

In that mission i learned for the first time that a flamethrower can bring down walls. I learned it the hard way. After shooting one reticulan with it, the wall covering my troops was gone. Waving friendly at the 5 or 6 retis behind it and then run didn't work. ouch.

well, I can finally add my story here

first time I tried this mission I met a group of enemies in the "forest" outside the base and they killed all my guys in no time. so I waited a good while to try again...

second time I move up to the wall immediately and positioned my guys on either side of the gate. two snipers and a grenadier on one side and three guys with close-ranged weapons on the other. I was just about to move in and see if there were any enemies as one of them take a step outisde the gate and is vaporized before I could even blink. so I decided to just stay there and see if I could lure more enemies out. worked pretty damn well. when finally no more aliens would come out, I went in and had to pick off two long ranged ones. those two hurt me A LOT, but I had lots of medi-kits.

once in the base, I decided to equip two runners with neosteads and a bunch of medikits and just run like a maniac and get the files. met LOTS of aliens on the way, but I managed to trick all of them around corners and take them up cose worked very well.

Well I don't know if anyone still reads this but heres goes :(

1st attempt I got slaughtered as I just bulled through the map like every mission I had done before. :(

Then I thought shieeeeeeeet I need to think here :muton:

Then I did this ;)

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/Xzarr/Ufo/Russianbase.jpg

1) Any soldier with high observation skill

2) Shotgun/CAWS/Plasma Shotgun

3) Grenade launcher and superstriker

4) Steyr

5) Sniper

6) Medic (No need if u do it right)

Group three is in a little dip in the scenery (or 4 me at least :)) and starts firing at the wall dead ahead of them.

Once the wall is blown down keep firing where it was or just behind where it was and keep going at it!

Get your sniper going at em too :muton:

This should 90% of the 'greys' as they all stupidly go to see whats happened

The remaining 10 % can be killed when they come towards you by 2 or 4.

This is what I've done several times and I've never lost a man yet :ninja:

The only problems with your tactic are the following things:

1. Get person 2 to that point unharmed.

2. What to do if the reticulans break through the trap?

That doesn't mean your tactic will not work, BUT you should be prepared for surprises, especially on higher difficulty settings or with the Tough-Alien-Mod installed.

Only take 4 of your team in!

My recommended squad would be

3 rifleman (2 with medpacks if you can)

1 sniper

Follow the arrows

#1 Crouch at this corner your sniper and 2 rifleman

Use the third rifleman to carry on following the arrows drop his rifle and the rest of his equipment so his speed is average (or +) then get him to leg it back escorted by the rest of the team.

(You might run into a rocket launching alien just past #1 on your way back , personally I just ignored him and ran its not worth it)

he gets runs back..and than i clear the base...room by room..just for the fun of it
